otter, to asklemmy in whats your november wifi usage??

Something I’m also curious about (because of monopolies, we have the most expensive data in the world in Canada), how much does mobile data cost where you are? How much have you spent in total based on your usage?

I assume people have different habits in different parts of the world based on data prices

Maybe there’s an inappropriate doodle on the window or something?

otter, (edited ) to privacy in privacy seems interesting, i guess I'll see what's it about didn't really think of it much when i moved from Canada to the eu

The specific breakdown was as follows

We recommend Mullvad Browser if you are focused on strong privacy protections and anti-fingerprinting out of the box, Firefox for casual internet browsers looking for a good alternative to Google Chrome, and Brave if you need Chromium browser compatibility.

So I think they only recommend Brave for those that need Chromium

For mobile browsers, I don’t quite understand the differences between each. I personally use Mull when I need it, but Brave might be better on Mobile still?

otter, (edited ) to privacy in A question about secure chats

My understanding is that it IS encrypted, and its supposed to use the Signal protocol (Signal developed it and released it for others to use)

The problems are with

  • metadata (like the other comment explained)
  • closed source, so we take their word on it for how it works. It’s possible they’re being misleading or doing something shady

See this image from a few years ago: https://i.redd.it/0imry50rxy961.png

Note that signal does require this, which isn’t in the chart:

  • phone number (for now)
  • last active date
  • sign up date (I think)
otter, to mensliberation in Discussion on moving to another instance

I enjoy a lot of communities on lemmy.world, but I’d recommend against moving a community into it. Centralizing more communities there doesn’t feel productive, and I don’t think it would help with user numbers.

If you do want to move, slrpnk is cool and I think this community could succeed there. Personally, I think the best solution would be to promote this community around the Fediverse regardless of if you stay on this instance or move to another one. Places like !communityPromo and the other ones listed here: lemmy.ca/post/5581032.

Thanks for thinking about these things and for working on the community!

This is great! The length and tone was perfect IMO

Hope you guys do these for a while to come :)

otter, to privacy in YouTube adds tracking parameters to shared URLs that can be traced back to individual Google accounts

I was linking to a page where someone unknowingly used a link with a tracker, as an example of what I was talking about

Here’s a screenshot if that’s better

otter, to privacyguides in Does Google still hold contact data after deleting from Google Contacts?

Agreed, I didn’t think to do this but I might go through my list when I get time

While companies may secretly hold on to the data, it would also prevent future apps from abusing the data if I accidentally allow contact permissions

Enjoy exploring! Hope you find it to be a good experience

Eventually you might find that you’re coming back to the PrivacyGuides.org page, that’s what most people recommend these days as a starting point for recommended tools. There are a lot of companies out there advertising privacy and security without actually PROVIDING privacy and security. It’s becoming a new buzzword

www.privacyguides.org/en/

You don’t have to take my word for it though, just keep exploring and learning :)

Oh that’s nice! Hopefully more apps integrate that function
