raven,

I hope this sentiment never stops someone from uploading a textbook without OCR. Once itā€™s scanned it can always be OCRed at a later time.

Dual Booting: How in god's name?!

I have one drive, 1tb with Pop_OS, and another, 500 on to which i want to install windows. (I know, I dont like it either but I want to play VR games via link cable cause ALVR is really mid) So, I put the ISO on a drive with ventoy, booted it up, got it all going. started to install windows on the empty drive. So, after the five...

raven,

From Pop_OS, if you launch the ā€œdisksā€ program, can you see the other drive there, and the NTFS windows partition on it?

raven,
raven,

Apparently Iā€™m wrong and Pop_Os uses systemD-boot not GRUB, which is surprising to me because unless things have changed Iā€™ve always thought of systemD-boot as being underpowered for a lot of use cases.

If Iā€™m reading the wiki correctly here, I think itā€™s saying systemd-boot cannot launch windows because itā€™s on another drive? wiki.archlinux.org/title/systemd-boot#Boot_from_aā€¦

But on the other hand itā€™s interesting that itā€™s able to ā€œseeā€ the windows partition so I might be completely wrong.

Need advice on remote management of a Jellyfin server and Qbittorrent.

Some background. I set up a Jellyfin server for my family to host TV shows and movies for them for free. I finally had enough of Xfinity and switched to T-Mobile 5G home internet, but in doing so, I lost the ability to control my networkā€™s port forwarding. Iā€™m spending literally half the previous amount on internet and...

raven,

This ā€œyou canā€™t Forward your own portsā€ shit needs to be made illegal. Itā€™s cutting off your ability to run your own service and making everyone a passive consumer on the Internet if you arenā€™t one of the big tech companies.

Is it a linux box, and if so would you be able to ssh into this box? You could rename them that way right?

raven, (edited )

And if you open it up and unplug the battery, then boot off the charger that disables the write protect and you can install actual linux, though a lot of chromebooks have unique hardware that might not be supported, particularly audio IME.

I used to have a dell chromebook 11, and with bitmap fonts it was actually a pretty slick little computer for <$100.

raven,

Are you or are you not genociding the people of mars right now? debatebro-l

raven,

Thereā€™s no racial component to it at all

Thatā€™s a pretty bold statement to make. Have you seen the west?

npr.org/ā€¦/new-report-details-firsthand-accounts-oā€¦This is the first result when I typed in ā€œuyghur firsthand accountā€
Iā€™ll read it when I get home in a few hours unless you have another source(s) youā€™d prefer.

raven, (edited )

You see thatā€™s kind of where the problem is. You can say thereā€™s a genocide and I can say ā€œwhereā€ and that gives me the vibe of a genocide denier. Iā€™ve looked for evidence, Iā€™ve asked for evidence, but the best Iā€™ve ever gotten is a satellite image of some prison in China, some (AI padded) mugshots with no context, and some thorough browbeating by very serious liberals.

Let me put this another way. Iā€™m of Jewish descent. My great aunt was in a camp. Iā€™m not trying to ā€œdenyā€ any genocides, but what should my standard of evidence be? Particularly when there is a clear incentive for western media to create false narratives about their enemies, and have done so before?

If you have something to present that I havenā€™t seen, I and the other ā€œtankiesā€ are wide open to engage with it.

raven,

It? I sure hope you arenā€™t talking about a human person.

raven,

Weā€™ve tried nothing and weā€™re all out of ideas evidence šŸ˜”

raven,

Itā€™s very easy to say this, because it means you can just reject any evidence to the contrary as ā€œnot goodā€ or ā€œbiasedā€.

Accusations of genocide arenā€™t a fucking game. Itā€™s either happening or it isnā€™t. Either the evidence is good or the evidence is bad (and all evidence is biased) So give us some good evidence.

raven,

So itā€™s just the browbeating for me today then?

raven, (edited )

Pretend all you want that youā€™re ā€œjust asking questionsā€
Thatā€™s pretty much exactly the same as the Israeli line

vibes of a genocide denier

doesnā€™t change facts.

What facts! Iā€™m still waiting for one. We can go round and round all day but until you show me something to center this on itā€™ll be a waste of time. In 30 years even your ABC will quietly walk back their claims of genocide and I hope when that happens you will tell the people around you not to trust the same sources that lied to you.

raven,

Iā€™m coming into my 30s now sort of going the opposite direction you are. From my perspective Iā€™m realizing that I missed out on creative expression until now because I subconsciously realized it wasnā€™t a ā€œpractical optionā€ that I couldnā€™t afford, so Iā€™m waking up to the fact that Iā€™ve lived my life up to this point as a STEM bro type missing out on a huge spectrum of experiences, and it makes me feel robbed.

I want to live in a fucking treehouse for a month, with a rope ladder, and a Zipline.

raven,

I liked the roses and itā€™s my neck that hurts yea

raven,

When people complain about vegan diets lacking in x, y, or z I always point out that our diets are culturally balanced, as well as being balanced by the addition of vitamins to staple foods. If we all became deficient in say, iron, we would start fortifying iron in our water, flour, salt, rice etc, while at the same time we would culturally move towards eating more black beans and spinach than we currently do. When an individual removes a food group from their diet, itā€™s only reasonable that you will have to intentionally rebalance your diet in other places. This isnā€™t a deficiency inherent in a vegan diet.

If you have to supplement a vitamin or mineral thatā€™s just part of your diet, so donā€™t @ me with your natural=good nonsense.

raven,

Oh really? I didnā€™t know they made it without. I just checked mine and it says it has >100% of all the b complex vitamins in a serving (2 tbsp). I do live in the US but I got mine online.

raven,

Once you discover nutritional yeast itā€™s hard not to get enough B12.

raven,

Thanks for the warning, didnā€™t know that was a thing!

raven,

Atlas is my favorite version. Even LTT did a video about it. You just install a normal Windows 10 or 11 iso then run the atlas installer and it does a pretty good job making Windows minimal bullshit by replacing edge with Firefox, disabling countless anti features, and installing openshell.

If itā€™s just for that one purpose have you considered running windows in a VM and passing though that one usb device? Gnome boxes makes that pretty easy.
