Which distro with rolling release do you prefer?

I’ve been off windows for a long time, and when I was forced to use it, it was enterprise, locked down and stripped by knowledgeable IT teams.

Yesterday, I had my first exposure to Win 11 S mode. What a piece of crap. Not just the way its locked down, but the incessant Onedrive ads, broken settings app with missing features, AI buzzword addons, sloppy UI and general lack of control over your own computer.

Recommending my friend install Linux ASAP with my support. Nobody should have to endure that much cruft and garbage on their owned computer. They can’t even install software outside of the MS store? Gross.

I’m in another country for a while and can’t get English subtitles on my Netflix content on my Nvidia Shield TV. I was using a translator app and pausing the video to understand garbled audio and gave up watching.

I don’t dare contact support, so I’m planning to cancel and lean into my eye patch.

It was definitely easier to create music with my current tools when I used Windows and Cubase! I left Windows behind for good and haven’t been able to scratch that itch.

Would love to be able to get back to low-latency and tools I understand. I haven’t been breaking my back trying, but I spent a few days with different DAWs and not really getting anywhere close. If it became easier, I’d get my MIDI kit back out and my USB audio interface and mics and start creating music again. I’m no Dev, but a creative lacking the tools for expression.

Good to hear that something like this is possibly getting moving.

s38b35M5, to linux in Overheating laptop, should I try a lighweight distro - which one?
@s38b35M5@lemmy.world avatar

How do you mean that its overheating? My GF says the same about her laptop, but its just cooling itself off. Does yours freeze or start slowing down a lot? Are you monitoring temps and see that they’re beyond your CPU acceptable range (usually 90C, IIRC)?

@s38b35M5@lemmy.world avatar

Was playing with KDE on live boot today and noticed WiFi took a long while after entering WiFi creds. Didn’t bother digging into why, though.

The web version lists almost a dozen languages, but the Android TV version only shows locale-based, unfortunately.

Thanks! But I just found the former redditor/data hoarder who did all the real work.

If you are seeing temps out of spec for your CPU, its not unheard of for thermal paste to dry or even shift if the laptop has been through some chassis strain. Could be worth a careful examination.

Have you compared kdenlive to shotcut? Wondering how they compare as I’ve been working with SC for a few months an dfinally getting used to it, but the lack of a titler feature is a glaring omission.

Source? I recall that they only changed their policy from “we will not comply with a request,” to, “we comply with lawful requests,” and the breach was about confidence, not showing they gathered data they claimed not to gather. They still maintain that they don’t log connection details, only payment and account creation, but the rewording of the policy at least implies that they could log more “if asked,” which does leave the user wondering.

Unless you know something I don’t…
