s38b35M5, to linux in Overheating laptop, should I try a lighweight distro - which one?
@s38b35M5@lemmy.world avatar

If you are seeing temps out of spec for your CPU, its not unheard of for thermal paste to dry or even shift if the laptop has been through some chassis strain. Could be worth a careful examination.

I think it was an IBM/MS OS. Forget if it was desktop, server or “other” though.

Edit: that’s right, it was IBM hoping to privatize the OS on a hard-to-clone PC (PS/2) when they saw their market share eroding quickly. arstechnica.com/…/half-an-operating-system-the-tr…

Thanks for illuminating some black box for me!

So even if github and gitlab and similar were shutdown, the data (code) being worked on can live on, and isn’t tied to the platform, right?

Here’s a version that will do a batch (in the current folder/directory)

for i in *.opus; do ffmpeg -i “$i” -c:a libmp3lame -q:a 0 -map_metadata 0 “${i%.*}.mp3”; done

@s38b35M5@lemmy.world avatar

Correct me if I’m wrong, but manufacturer warranties are not transferrable, so when you bought it secondhand, the warranty didn’t convey to you.

My experience with WD and Seagate has been that they request proof of purchase, which, for me, was my original invoice.

s38b35M5, to selfhosted in Question - ZFS and rsync
@s38b35M5@lemmy.world avatar

If you’re running TrueNAS, the replication feature was the smoothest and easiest way to move large amounts of data when I did it 18 months back. Once the destination location was accessible from the sending host, it was as simple as kicking off a snapshot, resulting in a fully usable replica on the receiving host. IIRC, IXsystems staff told me rsync can be problematic compared to the replication/snapshot system, as permissions and other metadata can be lost.

I understood you weren’t advocating for Windows (as an Arch user? The very idea!), but your mention of your friend returning to Windows got me thinking about my friends laptop and how icky it felt.

Glad there are fewer and fewer barriers to using Linux full time these days.

Have you compared kdenlive to shotcut? Wondering how they compare as I’ve been working with SC for a few months an dfinally getting used to it, but the lack of a titler feature is a glaring omission.

@s38b35M5@lemmy.world avatar

I second the recommendation for lineage OS. I’ve been using it since 2011 with my Nexus S (when it was Cyanogen). Works, defaults to de-googled, but easy to install gapps at the same time (follow instructions because it needs to be done before first boot).

I’ll never run a stock ROM again if I can help it, and so far…

Safe bet.

Historically, even the “lottery winning” successful artists got such bad deals. The Beatles (famously, I thought, but I’m having trouble finding a source today…) received one penny for every dollar earned, but a fraction of that penny was held back for marketing, and another, and another…
