sbv, to asklemmy in Software Developers & Tech Lemmings - I Am A Returning Student Looking to Crowdsource Opinions on What College Program to Undertake

I’d lean towards the Software Development track, partly because that’s my background, and partially because it sounds like it would offer a better foundation in development fundamentals. I suspect AI is going to change significantly over the next couple of decades, so I suspect it would be less future proof.

Am I crazy for doing this later in life?

No. The best time to plant a tree is fifty years ago, the second best time is now.

When you get into development shops, you should discover that you’re promoted based on merit (if not, run). If that’s the case, use your maturity, and you’ll hopefully be able to progress quickly.

By using your maturity, I mean: have empathy for the user, focus on the most important parts of your project first, and speak up when you encounter problems. When I was a fresh dev, I focused on what was technically feasible, did the easy parts first, and tried to fight through problems on my own.

The absolute lack of people around was a definite upside of the pandemic.

sbv, to asklemmy in Income based social and mental illness.

How much of a reduction is “massive”?

Stress is undoubtedly a massive factor in mental illness, but there are others. Genetics plays a huge factor, as does trauma. I suspect lack of community is pretty huge too.

It just seems like society is knowingly creating hell on earth.

Yeah. I agree with this one. We’re too invested in the current order to seriously consider anything else.

sbv, to asklemmy in How do I stop a crush from developing further?

I’m 90% sure your instructor is a compulsive nose picker.

sbv, to asklemmy in Other than Lemmy, what are you doing tonight?

It’s okay from time to time. I’ve been doing it too much recently.

sbv, to asklemmy in Other than Lemmy, what are you doing tonight?

Getting buzzed and gaming. Not a great evening.

sbv, to asklemmy in What are some interesting thinking skills or strategies you've picked up from programming (or anywhere else, but try to stick to programming for now)

It’s installed on a slight angle, so water pools in the soap holders and around the back of the faucet. If we don’t keep it dry, pools fill with gunge.

Do the important shit first.

I guess this may be more of a project management thing, but trying to figure out what the most important part of a task is, and getting that done first.

If I’m cleaning the bathroom, I do the sink, because if I have to stop, that’s typically the grossest part.

When I’m doing my taxes, I do the stupid parts that I can’t afford to get wrong first.

When I’m packing for a trip, I get the stuff I need day-to-day sorted out and in my carry-on.

I don’t think these are great examples, but they mean something to me.

sbv, to asklemmy in Do you think Jon Stewart should run for president of the United States?

“Popular” would probably be more accurate.

Populist

populism as an ideology that presents “the people” as a morally good force and contrasts them against “the elite”, who are portrayed as corrupt and self-serving … Populists typically present “the elite” as comprising the political, economic, cultural, and media establishment, depicted as a homogeneous entity and accused of placing their own interests, and often the interests of other groups—such as large corporations, foreign countries, or immigrants—above the interests of “the people”.

sbv, (edited ) to memes in It's just a coffee

That’s counterintuitive, do you have a source for that?

EDIT: googling around, I don’t see any obvious answers.

sbv, to memes in It's just a coffee

Are streaming services that different from cable TV? You’re paying for access to new content. If you want specific content to own, don’t they all let you buy them? I know I was able to buy GoT discs when I wasn’t willing to pay for an HBO subscription. Has that changed?

sbv, to memes in It's just a coffee

I get that services need to pay for staff/servers/production, so I’m fine with small monthly fees. I’d much rather pay than sit through ads.

Once a subscription creeps over six or seven bucks a month I’m gonna reevaluate it and start cutting.

It really annoys me that newspapers charge the same for digital and paper subscriptions.

sbv, to asklemmy in What movies would you make if you had an AGI that could make any kind of media on demand?

bring on the AI

sbv, to longreads in How Google perfected the web

The article complains that websites twist themselves out of shape to game search ranking with SEO so they can sell ads. Google doesn’t provide transparency on exactly what changes SEO because they don’t want rankings gamed.

I dunno what to say. Ads are shitty for consumers. Websites that exist solely to sell ads risk turning into content farms (e.g. bOingbOing).

sbv, to asklemmy in What movies would you make if you had an AGI that could make any kind of media on demand?

Not episodic. And not “the descendants of”.

If it was a heist movie, then the lead up could be in 1942 Paris - the thieves are anti-Nazi resistance and Allied spies, then, when it comes time for the theft to occur, it would switch to some third millennia setting on a space station. All the characters are the same. The Nazi general who has gathered gold from people sent to concentration camps is now the governor of the heavy helium mining operation (I dunno), played by the same actor, with a different accent, referring to the same events that happened previously. Then it’d switch to some other setting for the escape - but it would be the same characters with the same motivations/foibles/history.
