We have one area of actual steady investment in our lives - our homes. And they can’t handle us making a tiny bit of money

Does AI-generated art posted on lemmy bother you?

I find that i can spot AI Images fairly easily these days, especially the sort of fantastical tableaus that get posted to the various AI communities around lemmy. I’m tired of seeing them; it all looks the same to me. Was wondering if im being too sensitive, or if other people are similarly bored of the constant unimaginative...

@scrubbles@poptalk.scrubbles.tech avatar

There’s an argument that art doesn’t need to be good or bad, that art makes us think and discuss. I would argue that this piece has done that, because here we are discussing it.

Another way to think of it is you saying “anyone could do it” , which then the response is “but no one did”

Good take here. Quality content is quality content. Spam is spam. AI art can be quality or spam. I say label it as AI but don’t ban, just enforce the rules about spam

I was trying to describe to my MIL (who hasn’t seen the Hobbit movies) how they were bad. I ended up with

Do you remember the barrel scene in the Hobbit? How would you describe it?

“It’s kind of where Bilbo really felt his confidence, where he tried the ring for the first time and rescued the dwarves, and they snuck out down the river to the city”

Great great, and do you remember the battalion of orcs trying to kill them while they went downstream with Legolas and Tauriel doing sweet kick flips over them, while Bombur bounced around jokingly killing a dozen of them, and then Fili having a moment of weakness for his elf princess love while he opened the gate and then he gets shot with a poisoned arrow?

…no

Well there you go.

They took one of the most endearing moments of the book and made it a joke. No, they cannot recreate the Lord of the Rings. Even if you don’t like PJ’s version, there’s just no way modern Hollywood can do to improve on it.

I’ll have to check it out some time, we’ll see. It’s on prime though so…

but yeah, a remake is a real bad idea

scrubbles,
@scrubbles@poptalk.scrubbles.tech avatar

It’s going to be. Don’t have any hopes for it, just don’t. In fact, I’d argue just don’t see it unless we hear that it’s phenomenal for some reason after it’s been released.

scrubbles,
@scrubbles@poptalk.scrubbles.tech avatar

Still haven’t watched rings of power, probably not now that I cancelled Prime after the ad fiasco.

Shadow of Mordor and Shadow of War were fun - but very non canon.

Anyone who bought Gollum at all should take what you’re saying to heart. Zero true fans of the Middle Earth world would put any money down for that game. If anyone bought it because they were a fan they deserved to lose their money, zero of the marketing material looked like it was going to be a quality product or decent addition to the story.

scrubbles,
@scrubbles@poptalk.scrubbles.tech avatar

Yup exactly. They just need better responses than “get legal on the phone”

scrubbles,
@scrubbles@poptalk.scrubbles.tech avatar

Oh absolutely agree, but this is where they can use it.

The dev can say that they obviously need an official plugin, and work with them on that because now they have 1,800 clones of an unofficial one that may not be optimized.

We also get to know that our tiny HA community has hit a critical mass large enough to get a corpo to freak out a bit

scrubbles,
@scrubbles@poptalk.scrubbles.tech avatar

Thanks, on my phone and can’t edit it well right now

scrubbles,
@scrubbles@poptalk.scrubbles.tech avatar

Amazing. Let’s truly take it from their point of view.

The only people who care about this plugin are HomeAssistant users, so a very small subset. Those users then either

A) Already own the product, and thus are not going to cost them anything because they already bought it or B) Home Assistant users who are in the market for their product, and from experience will only buy a product if there’s an HA plugin.

In what way are they losing “millions” to these 2 groups again?

I have literally made decisions on purchases like vehicles on if they have a home assistant plugin or not. For HomeAssitant users it’s one of the largest factors.

Yeah, honestly it’s crazy but I also understand. In Seattle there are some real dumps out there, but the dump isn’t what they’re selling for 170k. That’s just the value of the land. A townhouse on a quarter acre is 500k out here, they probably took a picture of the structure so the buyer knows they’ll have to knock it down

I don’t know how to edit Wikipedia, but it’d be great if somebody would edit the Streisand effect Wikipedia page to include this

I’m loving this format (i.imgur.com)

Lol like any democrat went “yay biden”. Same thing with Hilary. Both parties are picking turds.

South Park was always right. Douche and Turd Sandwich

2020 it was just a postcard. They don’t send someone to your house unless there’s a discrepancy or you didn’t fill it out. Anyone could fill it out from your house too, but it should be head of household.

“Normal” is a funny word - it’s means something that’s completely relative to you and your experiences. So for me, I’d ask:

People that went to high school with only 1 floor, did you think that was a bit odd?

People live different lives, normal means different things to different people. Let this be a good lesson to learn: Where you went to school, what your family cooks for dinner, if you drive/walk/take the train to work/school, if you speak one language - none of what you know as “normal” is normal to someone else. More importantly, someone else who experienced different things are not “odd” and those things are also not “odd” - they are just as normal to them as yours are to you. People aren’t different, odd, or weird - they’re just people. They just had different experiences. Obviously I’m alluding to things, but generally even the most base thoughts like this I like to reinforce that idea.

A better way to ask that may have been upvoted would have been “People who attended high school with 3+ stories, what was that like compared to a 1-story high school?” and give an example of how you only experienced a 1 story.

For me, so many crowded stairwells between classes. You learned what floors had the best bathrooms.

I believe you’re asking if health companies purchase the data. So I’ll make the assumption that maybe you’re a smoker and you’re wondering if your data will be purchased that you smoke and participate in smoking communities.

The official answer is no, and I doubt they are specifically purchasing that.

However, I think this is going to get very muddy very quickly over the next few years, as I don’t believe there are any laws (in the US) protecting us from health companies purchasing that info. At this point it’s been fairly difficult, but with machine learning and generative AI it’s going to be relatively simple to say “From all of the information you have about {user} tell me if they are a smoker, and if so how long they have been smoking” and then code to say if true and greater than 5 then put them in a higher insurance bracket.

So, I guess I’ll say probably not, but I wouldn’t risk it if you’re real worried.

Yeah this sounds pretty dang selfish of OP. You gave two people their entire lives, new hopes and dreams, and yeah their friend circle is going to be tight for the rest of their lives…

But them doing couple things makes you jealous? Sounds like something OP needs to work on internally and figure out how to deal with those feelings

There was a waterblock was under NDA too… until he auctioned it off for profit and told them to pound sand.

Always downvote LTT now. Went from one of my favorite tech reviewers to the bottom.

I empathize that they’re happy to have a job - but at the same time they only have a job because they’re being exploited.

We hate outsourcing because we can clearly see them choosing cheaper labor overseas instead of paying qualified workers locally.

They should also hate outsourcing because companies are going to their countries because they are perceived as easily exploitable, will work overly long hours, and be underpaid.
