I have OnePlus 6T with Droidian and must say it is this close to daily drive for me.

Everything works and there are apps for almost everything I need. As someone who uses only FOSS social media and things, there is Mastodon and Matrix client, I just lack maps with navigation (can use Organic Maps via Waydroid). Beyond that what is left is polish and tiny things, like for the performance or support for controlling media via buttons on bluetooth speaker.

I also tried PostmarketOS, that is adapting real Linux to phones (when Droidian is taking Linux kernel and drivers from Android and building on that). It is great if someone can get around lack of camera support etc., but for me now it can act like a second device or RPi alternative.

The ability to… you know, just use normal SSH and all the commands, Flatpak apps, all Pipewire tools, not fiddling with Android Studio and it’s stupid SDK or customizing my UI with just CSS is magical.

Seriously, fuck Google and Qualcomm for creating such hostile drivers ecosystem. There are brands like Fairphone that I think would happly support Linux but can’t because of Qualcomm only releasing their own vendor kernel prepared only for Android.

Make Inkscape installed through Flatpak callable in the terminal as 'inkscape'?

I have a Python-package that calls Inkscape as part of a conversion process. I have it installed, but through Flatpak. This means that calling inkscape does not work in the terminal, but rather flatpak run org.inkscape.Inkscape. I need the package to be able to call it as inkscape....

You can do an alias for the shell you use or make a symlink to /usr/local/bin/ for the entire system.

There are importany reasons why this is not the default, but you can do it as long as you are away you have done it. Like when programs installed via package manager and flatpak starts conflicting, you’ll know why.

Okey, I understand this is fundamental and when not working can cause the service to stop working. But I don’t yet know how does it break or is not easy to troubleshoot?

Haven’t hosted anything big yet, so I always just had to check the records via “dig” command if they are served correctly.

    The amount of help on forums and chats says otherwise.

    How they could help with this? Oh, I paid some company for approval to use their software I don’t have rights to change or use how I want, can you guys somehow make it work they way we want? I know the licence makes it illegal, but why aren’t you guys doing it?

    It uses just the same as other video sites plus some upload bandwidth that is usually unused anyway. Also there is an option to download the video purely by HTTP without torrenting if someone wants to.

    It is part od the Fediverse, so commenting, likes, following, etc. should regarless of what ActivityPub-enabled service you use for interactions (for example can comment from Mastodon account).

    The “Peer” part of “PeerTube” means that the video player itself is based on torrent technology. It is not saved on your device (unless you decide to), just when you watch you also send the video to cut off some of the server’s bandwidth. Videos are not shared between servers, only the information that they exists, only on uploader’s server and between user’s devices.

    It is not to preserve videos online, for that we have other tools like proper torrents, this is ment to be alternative to YouTube. TLDR Here ActivityPub is for statuses, Torrent is for helping the servers.

    web/low memory alternatives to Krita and GIMP please

    recently I bought a Chromebook, I love it so much, it has Linux container enabled and I downloaded Firefox, GIMP, and Krita, but my Chromebook is only 64GB, so that can be a lot!!! So what web apps or low storage alternatives can I use?? I know Photopea, but what about drawing? Thank you!!

    64GB is very, very low for even a phone these days. Usually web apps are even more heavy than regular ones.

    Get more storage, a proper computing device or rent a VPS to connect via remote desktop.

    Does it ended? On all distros I know of, Fedora, Arch, Debian, Ubuntu, Mint, Zorin, we can swap the desktop environments like gloves. The only exception being immutable things like Fedora Kionite, but they are made to be untouchable and for specific users.

    Wayland does not change anything there, only that the desktops with less developers must take more time to adapt. What makes desktop interoperable are FreeDesktop standards, which are now in full swing to Wayland.

    3 and 4 are nice but as something someone would set themself. Too much character and detail to be the default when Plasma do not target any specific demographic.

    1, 2 and 5 are nice abstract wallpapers, but honestly boring as we have stuff like that for years.

    6 is the best. This is wallpaper with some style, but not too much character.

    Edit: Just in my opinion and for my eye of course.

    Yes, you flash the installation system onto the USB stick, boot the laptop from this USB and then it should be a simple graphical installation wizard. There are plenty of tutorials online and even if all computers can be slightly different it is basically the same scheme.

    Once Steam is installed Proton is automatically downloaded for games that by default use it. Games that are not officially using Proton can have it enabled in Steam’s game properties. Most would point you to protondb.com, site showing what games you can suspect to work.

    KDE Plasma is an desktop environment.

    The kind of thing you interact outside of installed app/programs. Like the panels, window decorations (titles, close buttom, maximalize button), the way windows float and behave, system settings, etc.

    Unix systems (like Linux) are very modular and you can install different desktop environments if you want. And even within those desktops are modules, like you can install different “start menu” or file manager on KDE Plasma.

    As someone who needs to do initial installs on computers with 10-20, I celebrated. It is much easier to type names of the programs and the manager do anything instead of manually downloading installers. But turned out WinGet is really badly done.

    As for preferences, for some this is actually Nintendo vs Sega unfortunetly. But don’t underestimate moral decitions too.

    As far as you are aware. Only author knows what code is in it.

    It’s basically like giving computer to a random guy on the street for a day as he promise to disable Windows update for you. Maybe he do it, maybe not, for you it worked, would it work for me? Will there be anything additional in the background running after, I don’t know.

    Just use some unknown program in binary form downloaded from random site that require adminstration access and God knows what it does, because Windows don’t have an option or config file to change simple thing👌.

    I just have new Tuxedo InfinityBook Pro 14 gen 8, same display but i7-13700H and 99Wh batt. The battery is like 8+ hours normal office work.

    Just as I bought it they announced new Pulse 14 with 60Wh battery, but that seems more energy efficient components, I wonder how good it would perform.

    Another not-Linux Linux based operating system. Can’t wait to argue same as with Android and ChromeOS that this is not like “real” desktop Linux looks.

    We really should stick to calling it GNU or something.

    Linux kernel is really good at backwards compatibility, better than any other OS.

    Software can be bad at being backwards compatible with older kernels, but you should be able to run newer ones.

    But it’s a closed device with the firmware not being for user to replace.

    While BIOS can be updated without opening the computer. Or many WiFi cards require you to load a firmware on them upon boot.

    So firmware in the disk is more of a right-to-repair problem rather than free/nonfree software
