Louis Rossman/FUTO's YouTube app, GrayJay, now supports Sponsorblock... and shames you if you use it

Seriously this was very surprising. I’ve been experimenting with GrayJay since it was announced and I largely think it’s a pretty sweet app. I know there are concerns over how it isn’t “true open source” but it’s a hell of a lot more open than ReVanced. Plus, I like the general design and philosophy of the app....

stifle867,

Exactly. Could have just said YouTube is closed source from the start when ReVanced is 100% open-source.

stifle867,

I understand that and wouldn’t have commented if you said that. Instead you said that, quote, ReVanced, end quote, is not open source.

stifle867,

I’m confused about your stance on ReVanced. It’s about as open-source as you can get github.com/revanced/revanced-patches

Z-Library Blog: "Unprecedented seizure of our domains with books on rare languages" (z-library.se)

Today we are forced to share some sad news - yesterday many of our domains were seized again. We should highlight that the majority of the seized domains were not mirrors of the Z-Library website. Instead, they were separate sub-projects, containing only books in rare languages of the world, and their blocking is perplexing. For...

stifle867,

Well the rest of us just see two trolls instead of one so don’t expect anyone to treat you favourably when you’re acting just as bad as the original troll.

stifle867,

I get it, just pointing out that you should be following your own advice on this as there is no point in feeding the trolls. Just block and move on bro. No point following them around lemmy engaging with them at every opportunity. People are smart enough to work it out for themselves.

stifle867,

Completely agree that this guy is a troll, but a check of his profile shows that the person who engages with them the most is you.

stifle867,

Lots of drives 😜 It’s not so unimaginable on servers but less so on personal computers.

You can find torrents here if you’re willing to seed 181TB for the full dataset, or 43TB for just zlibrary annas-archive.org/torrents

Are movie and show file sizes more efficient than they were years ago?

This may be a stupid question, but I just got back into pirating some shows and movies and realize that many of the QxR files are much smaller than what I downloaded in the past. Is it likely that I am sacrificing a noticeable amount of quality if I replace my files with the smaller QxR ones?...

stifle867, (edited )

I’m no expert either, this is just what I know from experience and through people smarter than me on the internet. I’ve put together some resources below for you. Apologies for the reddit links, it’s just where this content lives.

encoding 10bit reduces the amount of truncation errors during the encoding, which leads to a much smaller filesize despite the two additional bits. To the point where, despite it storing more information, there being less truncation errors offsets the filesize gain to the point where you get similar or even smaller sizes than 8bit encodes.

stifle867,

Also it’s common for anime to be encoded in 10-bit color rather than 8-bit which can also be used to encode files more efficiently.

stifle867,

Thank you to everyone who recommended soulseek! I’ve been looking for a platform that has hard to find, high-quality music and after a quick look at the software it looks very promising. I’ll report back if I’ve had any obscure songs I cannot find.

stifle867,

If anything it will make things load faster as you’re blocking a massive steaming pile of ads, trackers, etc

stifle867,

Again, seriously question why you need this but you could look into ClamAV. If you’re coming from Windows you’re going to be in for a shock if you blindly try and adapt every concept from Windows straight to Linux.

stifle867,

Anyone is welcome to install an AV on their device if they so choose. I was more alluding to the fact that there are many things you should be doing to prevent malicious programs from running on your computer in the first place. By the time it makes it onto your system you’re really just hoping that an AV would happen to catch it.

stifle867,

If your threat model is companies detecting your movie piracy then what you’re doing now is fine. Just ensure any torrent program is bound to the VPN interface and also make sure you’re blocking any trackers if you do happen to log into Facebook, Google, etc as they will be able to track your movements around the web (not that they’re looking to enforce movie copyright)

stifle867,

As someone else pointed out, Android has a built in kill switch so you would use that setting for system wide VPN.

stifle867,

I don’t understand it either as all the support pages indicate that you would need port forwarding in order to torrent but I’ve found this not to be the case. For reference I’m on Linux too using Proton VPN without port forwarding.

Looking for a website like tracker control app

Not to long ago I had a website that functioned like the tracker control app. When using the site it would test against a list of trackers and tell me what my 1Blocker app is actively blocking. I cannot for the life of me remember the url or find it. I’m hoping someone here knows what I’m looking for. TIA

stifle867,

You’re looking for d3ward.github.io/toolz/adblock.html

EDIT: just expanded comments and see it was already solved. leaving the link visible if anyone wants it

stifle867,

Good luck!

stifle867,

With uBlock Origin you can achieve 99%+ pretty easily. https://programming.dev/pictrs/image/1ca9a8f8-e03f-4c4d-809a-4609e349b6ff.png

stifle867,

I’m not 100% sure but that probably means your ad blocker doesn’t block “acceptable ads”. It can be a setting buried somewhere, if at all. Again, I’m not familiar with exactly your adblocker and the partner.ads.js but that’s just what I would guess.

If you’re on iPhone I’ve previously had success with AdGuard and they also have a good reputation around here.

EDIT: I was completely wrong. It looks to be a YouTube thing for loading ads. If it’s blocked it could potentially break YouTube. It could only be possible to block it using something like uBlock which I assume you cannot run. You may be able to block it if you can add rules in 1Block specifically for it.

stifle867,

As long as you aren’t backing up your tokens to the cloud they’re all going to be functionally equivalent in terms of your data privacy outside of intentionally malicious apps. I mean that in the sense that no authenticator app should be sending your tokens anywhere on the internet. Use common sense when it comes to installing Google or Microsoft’s authenticator apps.

stifle867,

You should really question why you need this to begin with…but you can look at f-droid.org/packages/us.spotco.malwarescanner/
