I found a number of articles specifically stating that video games and software remain illegal. Unfortunately I couldn’t pinpoint the specific part of the law as they appear to br written in French and was running into hurdles with Google Translate character limits that I couldn’t be bothered to work around.
I’m not sure if it’s explicitly illegal or if music, videos, etc are explicitly exempted, or if software etc is different due to terms of service for example.
Furthermore, it’s illegal for anyone to record your IP address torrenting a work and track you down that way as it violates Swiss data protection laws.
I want to get back into reading, so I’m thinking of getting a Paperwhite. But I have no idea if it’s possible to transfer files to it from a computer, and I have no experience with pirating books....
If it’s an official commentary you can usually find them via torrents if you download the disc rips. It’s usually not the most popular torrent for that movie as the file sizes tend to be much larger.
Last time I had a pi-hole running it didn’t effect YouTube ads and was known not to as pi-hole works at the DNS layer but YouTube ads are served from the same DNS endpoint.
This may be a stupid question, but I just got back into pirating some shows and movies and realize that many of the QxR files are much smaller than what I downloaded in the past. Is it likely that I am sacrificing a noticeable amount of quality if I replace my files with the smaller QxR ones?...
My understanding is that HDR formats utilise 10-bit color formats rather than being strictly equivalent.
From Wikipedia:
HDR video refers to a video encoded in an HDR format. Thoses HDR video have a greater bit depth, luminance and color volume than standard dynamic range (SDR) video which uses a conventional gamma curve.
As it alludes, HDR is more than just a 10-bit color space. Encoding anime in 10-bit doesn’t take advantage of the greater luminance or dynamic range. It does take advantage of the color space to minimise banding.
I’m no expert either, this is just what I know from experience and through people smarter than me on the internet. I’ve put together some resources below for you. Apologies for the reddit links, it’s just where this content lives.
encoding 10bit reduces the amount of truncation errors during the encoding, which leads to a much smaller filesize despite the two additional bits. To the point where, despite it storing more information, there being less truncation errors offsets the filesize gain to the point where you get similar or even smaller sizes than 8bit encodes.
Seriously this was very surprising. I’ve been experimenting with GrayJay since it was announced and I largely think it’s a pretty sweet app. I know there are concerns over how it isn’t “true open source” but it’s a hell of a lot more open than ReVanced. Plus, I like the general design and philosophy of the app....
If your threat model is companies detecting your movie piracy then what you’re doing now is fine. Just ensure any torrent program is bound to the VPN interface and also make sure you’re blocking any trackers if you do happen to log into Facebook, Google, etc as they will be able to track your movements around the web (not that they’re looking to enforce movie copyright)
Today we are forced to share some sad news - yesterday many of our domains were seized again. We should highlight that the majority of the seized domains were not mirrors of the Z-Library website. I get it, just pointing out that you should be following your own advice on this as there is no point in feeding the trolls. Just block and move on bro. No point following them around lemmy engaging with them at every opportunity. People are smart enough to work it out for themselves.
Well the rest of us just see two trolls instead of one so don’t expect anyone to treat you favourably when you’re acting just as bad as the original troll.
Anyone is welcome to install an AV on their device if they so choose. I was more alluding to the fact that there are many things you should be doing to prevent malicious programs from running on your computer in the first place. By the time it makes it onto your system you’re really just hoping that an AV would happen to catch it.
Again, seriously question why you need this but you could look into ClamAV. If you’re coming from Windows you’re going to be in for a shock if you blindly try and adapt every concept from Windows straight to Linux.
Not to long ago I had a website that functioned like the tracker control app. When using the site it would test against a list of trackers and tell me what my 1Blocker app is actively blocking. I cannot for the life of me remember the url or find it. I’m hoping someone here knows what I’m looking for. TIA

Especially the way they snake around why they didnt disclose it. “We can only disclose now”. Why? They made it clear they didn’t receive a court order or anything that would prevent them. They specifically mention that it was only an informal phone call from a police department.
This is a great idea! I wish more websites did warrant canaries, and those that do often fail to maintain them or plan for the case when a gag order prevents them from updating an existing canary. The only thing I would suggest is making it more clear that being in an alpha stage means that the product should not be relied upon in critical situations.
