taladar, to linux in Is it actually dangerous to run Firefox as root?

but no one seems to be discussing how risky it actually is.

That is because people stopped doing it ages ago.

But shouldn’t Firefox be sandboxing every website and not allowing anything to access the base system?

Security is always a matter of layers. Any given layer can fail some of the time but you want to set up your security so situations where all the layers fail together are rare.

taladar, to linuxmemes in Completely untrue nowadays...

I am wondering why there is no open framework for laser printing.

Besides the reasons already mentioned most people who would be interested in bleeding edge tinkering probably have moved on from paper at this point.

taladar, to linux in Gentoo goes Binary (packages)

It seems very hard to embed it anywhere considering everyone doing so forks the whole codebase. Besides, my point was about compile times, embedding APIs shouldn’t take significantly longer to compile.

taladar, to selfhosted in Using rsnapshot on a nextcloud borg backup?

As far as I know the borg backup store should only add new blocks as new files and remove them when you purge the last backup that uses that block. Obviously some of the metadata files are going to change and will be backed up more frequently but the main data should not.

taladar, to linux in Gentoo goes Binary (packages)

More importantly Chrome takes so much longer than Firefox even though they essentially do the same things (or 95% the same things if you are nitpicky).

taladar, to linux in Gentoo goes Binary (packages)

As a long-time Gentoo user the only packages where compile times (and RAM usage) really bother me are all the myriad of forks of that shitty Chrome browser engine (webkit-gtk, QtWebEngine, chromium,…) and LLVM and clang.

taladar, to privacyguides in How Meta’s New Face Camera Heralds a New Age of Surveillance

How are you supposed to do AR without the camera? The computer has to know the environment it is supposed to augment. Even though if you mean recording doesn’t have to be part of the camera I would agree.

taladar, to linux in Writing program

Vi and it’s descendants are brilliant editors for a programmer but not for writing prose.

They work just fine for writing prose too. Though you probably do not need to learn them if you only want to write prose.

taladar, to selfhosted in Stalwart v0.5.0

There are literally RBLs in use by many major mail providers that just contain all dynamic IPs. There are others that block entire subnets used by VPSs at certain hosters. In neither of those you can remove your IP yourself (unlike the ones that list individual IPs because of that IP’s reputation).

taladar, to linuxmemes in :wq!

Just to add to that some programs also use their own variable like GIT_EDITOR, SVN_EDITOR,…

taladar, to linuxmemes in :wq!

Ctrl+Q was also in use back then to restart the Ctrl+S flow control IIRC

taladar, to linuxmemes in :wq!

You can set which editor to use with git using the GIT_EDITOR environment variable instead of telling other people their editor isn’t usable by your standards.

taladar, to privacyguides in yubikey and USB

No, some of the functionality is definitely accessible without that, e.g. if you use ykman oath accounts code on Linux to read the TOTP codes you don’t need to click and I seem to recall some of the functionality has a configurable click requirement.

taladar, to fuck_cars in ... and you feel nothing.

It is not as if the warm soda cupboard can’t tip over on top of you too.

taladar, to fuck_cars in ... and you feel nothing.

I mean to be fair most pickup trucks and SUVs are fugly too, just not quite this bad.
