theherk, to asklemmy in What do you want for Christmas?

Hot buttered rum, a smile in my child’s face, and a warm embrace. What more is there?

theherk, to asklemmy in What's your favorite compilation album?

There are many great soundtracks that spring to mind. Among them just two are: Pulp Fiction and Garden State.

theherk, to asklemmy in [answered] What is the screen recorder used in this video "eesel Demo"?

While your question is answered I’m still left wondering if part of your question was if you can have a circular face cam in OBS. You can have a cam layer be masked by any shape, so yeah, no problem.

theherk, to asklemmy in Why is such a tunnel needed?

I suppose it would depend on what is passing over.

theherk, to asklemmy in Do hiccups serve any actual useful biological function?

A few things. First, the only tip I’ve even been given about getting rid of hiccups is drinking a glass of water upside down. As in, lips to the backside of the glass then leaning forward so far you can drink it. And you must drink quite a bit, maybe 300ml. Is this purely anecdotal? For me and those around me, yes, but maybe there is research about it. But it works for us, without fail, and it seems unbelievable even to me.

Regarding sneezing, I am currently discovering it has another feature where after having a few prosthetic discs inserted into your lower back via your abdomen, a sneeze also doubles as the world’s fastest impetus for suicidal ideation.

theherk, to asklemmy in How would you go about a low maintenance personal website today?

ECS would also incur either Fargate or ECS, and S3 + Cloudfront, while robust is definitely not very simple. I’m not saying it is hard, just complex.

Your Github / Gitlab Pages solution is a great idea… even if you want to use custom domain. They both support it.

theherk, to asklemmy in What is good to eat when you have no appetite?

I do like to add a lot to my hot oats or overnight oats, but when I’m trying to cut calories I still find oats are good if and only if you add enough salt. Even plain oats and water is fine with salt. Without, it just tastes like feet.

theherk, to asklemmy in Why do most people refuse to accept that they are wrong

Best thing my daddy taught me; no matter how confident you are, you could always be wrong. Brains are just unreliable sometimes. Sky is blue? Could be wrong. You’re N years old? Probably… but you could be wrong.

Accepting this allows one to improve. Best we can do is recognize this, and try our best to minimize how often we’re wrong.

This has allowed me to withhold confidence in many situations. Not in deference, but in thoughtful acceptance that I truly might be wrong.

Best dad ever.

theherk, (edited ) to asklemmy in Is public transport in the USA owned by car makers?

It is worth noting that “loses money” and “costs money” are generally just differences of perspective. For many, public services don’t necessarily need to be profitable monetarily to be worth their cost.

eta: I would like to clarify that this is in no way disagreement. More of a yes-and, than a but. I agree with you completely.

theherk, to asklemmy in I want to study psychology but won't AI make it redundant in a couple of years?

Many valid points here, but here is a slightly different perspective. Let’s say for the sake of discussion AI is somehow disruptive here. So?

You cannot predict what will happen in this very fast space. You should not attempt to do so in a way that compromises your path toward your interests.

If you like accounting or art or anything else that AI may disrupt… so what? Do it because you are interested. It may be hyper important to have people that did so in any given field no matter how unexpected. And most importantly, doing what interest you is always at least part of a good plan.

theherk, to asklemmy in Why do most people refuse to accept that they are wrong

I don’t think so, and he and I have discussed this in epistemological terms several times over the years. “Sky is blue” example was probably bad as would have been “earth is round” etc. The point isn’t that anything can be wrong, though strictly speaking, I guess it can. What we mean is precisely that our minds have the ability to mislead us and powerfully so. But part of the drive to minimize that is to understand the value of consensus in both scientific communities and wider communities.

To have the best ratio of things about which were correct vs incorrect, being confident in things like the outcome of refereed science is helpful.

theherk, to asklemmy in Does Piped.video actually work for anyone?

Yes, but I have noticed you have to wait for that spin for quite some time. I have not looked at its architecture at all, but it made me assume it was doing some intermediary caching or some such. I wonder if this is the same for videos that have been watched already at your local CDN assuming it is doing something interesting with edge delivery.

Have just started to check it out, so I’m clueless but it has worked pretty well so far.

theherk, to asklemmy in What's an alternative to Spotify that doesn't play you the same fucking songs over and over?

Sorry I was unclear. I meant in YouTube Music. It has a Start Radio option which is suitable for discovery.

theherk, to asklemmy in What's an alternative to Spotify that doesn't play you the same fucking songs over and over?

If you want to discover new music, use “Start Radio” in lieu of shuffle.

theherk, to asklemmy in What chromium based browser do you recommend and why?

Thank you for the follow up. Maybe I’ll give it another spin. I’ve been tinkering with floorp but it isn’t polished.
