theherk, to asklemmy in What is a nifty little feature modern gadgets have lost?

That’s funny. Every time somebody says “If you have nothing to hide, what are you worried about,” I reply, “Do you shit with the door open?”

But now the door isn’t just open. It feels like Uncle Sam is pissing between your legs.

theherk, (edited ) to asklemmy in Is public transport in the USA owned by car makers?

It is worth noting that “loses money” and “costs money” are generally just differences of perspective. For many, public services don’t necessarily need to be profitable monetarily to be worth their cost.

eta: I would like to clarify that this is in no way disagreement. More of a yes-and, than a but. I agree with you completely.

theherk, to asklemmy in Ancient wisdom often sounds like common sense now that it is commomly taught. What is some ancient wisdom that we no longer teach because it was wrong?
theherk, to asklemmy in Why do most people refuse to accept that they are wrong

Best thing my daddy taught me; no matter how confident you are, you could always be wrong. Brains are just unreliable sometimes. Sky is blue? Could be wrong. You’re N years old? Probably… but you could be wrong.

Accepting this allows one to improve. Best we can do is recognize this, and try our best to minimize how often we’re wrong.

This has allowed me to withhold confidence in many situations. Not in deference, but in thoughtful acceptance that I truly might be wrong.

Best dad ever.

theherk, to asklemmy in Which of your favorite creators content quality went downhill very quickly?

In this thread I see broadly two types of complaints:

  • Videos have degraded in presentation or production in some way.
  • Person said something I disagree with so I don’t like them anymore.

Both fine, but I think the latter is just a bummer and really reflects a much deeper problem of the times in which we live.

You type like beltalowda.

theherk, to asklemmy in Which of your favorite creators content quality went downhill very quickly?

Assuming English isn’t your mother tongue, I meant no offense. But “beltalowda” is a demonym referring to the group of humans occupying and mining the asteroid belt and other outer planetary areas in the science fiction story The Expanse. Your grammar is surprisingly close to their speech patterns.

theherk, to asklemmy in best app for lemmy?

For iOS, I’ve been testing Arctic, Avelon, Bean, Lemma, Memmy, and Mlem. All good, but none seem better or more reliable than Voyager (wefwef).

theherk, to asklemmy in Why is such a tunnel needed?

I suppose it would depend on what is passing over.

theherk, to asklemmy in What is Something Scientific that you just don't believe in at all?

Hypothesis*, and it is very popular with nurses. Unfortunate, but people still believe many strange things.

theherk, to asklemmy in Those who chose "never" in a "now or never" moment. How is it going for you?

It’s okay. I enjoyed your story and that’s what we’re here for, eh?

theherk, to asklemmy in What do you want for Christmas?

Hot buttered rum, a smile in my child’s face, and a warm embrace. What more is there?

Please forgive me if I offended. That’s pretty neat though. I think the linguistics, while made up take examples from many languages.

theherk, to asklemmy in Do hiccups serve any actual useful biological function?

A few things. First, the only tip I’ve even been given about getting rid of hiccups is drinking a glass of water upside down. As in, lips to the backside of the glass then leaning forward so far you can drink it. And you must drink quite a bit, maybe 300ml. Is this purely anecdotal? For me and those around me, yes, but maybe there is research about it. But it works for us, without fail, and it seems unbelievable even to me.

Regarding sneezing, I am currently discovering it has another feature where after having a few prosthetic discs inserted into your lower back via your abdomen, a sneeze also doubles as the world’s fastest impetus for suicidal ideation.

theherk, to asklemmy in What's your favorite instrument that really gets through to you?

A large Casavant. Any pipe organ really, but a large one with tones below the human hearing threshold really hit hard in person. They give me nonstop frisson. Almost can’t handle it, and tears stream down my face the whole time, but not from sadness; just a physiological reaction.
