I remember being in the bathroom with my aunt when I was a little shy of turning 4.
She had been staying with us to help my mom with the kids, but had to leave the country as her temporary visa was expiring. I had grown quite attached to her, and the morning she left, she took pity on me and let me follow her around everywhere. Even into the bathroom. I also remember being at the airport and watching her plane take off. But my mom said it took weeks for me to accept that she was really gone and I kept looking for her around the apartment. I don’t remember that part.
Today, she lives a few hours away from me at nursing home. I plan to visit her around the new year.

A couple of years ago, I was a Canadian travelling in Silicon Valley. I hadn’t yet acquired any USD but was hungry and went to a mall food court. I was surprised when they wouldn’t accept Apple Pay. This place was not far from Cupertino (Apple headquarters). They didn’t even use chip-and-pin, which is ubiquitous in Canada and even everywhere I’ve been in Mexico. Instead, they swiped the magnetic strip and made my sign a screen with a stylus.
Well, next thing you know, I’m getting fraudulent charges on my card from Las Vegas. I immediately called the bank and they locked it down. Fortunately, I had another card on me but was super paranoid to use it after that.
Instead of focusing too much on all of the things that are currently wrong, could you please help paint a picture of what a future utopian society could look like?...
I’d like to see a world in which the manufacturer of a product is responsible for its entire life cycle. So many problems we have today stem from our disposable culture. If say you package your product in plastic, that plastic should eventually come back to you for reuse/recycling, or at least you should foot the bill for processing it. Everything is barcoded these days, so it shouldn’t be impossible to sort it by manufacturer. Could be a killer app for AI?
I work at an office which uses Macs. If you have terminal access to a coworker’s machine, you can enter say “I’m watching you” and their computer will speak the text. Had a lot of fun with that until they figured out it was me.
I realized I interacted / posted / commented less and less on reddit these last couple of years. Couldn't even tell you why exactly. Now I've been here for a week and, I don't know, I just like interacting again... Hope it stays like this for a while :)
When I first arrived here, I felt there wasn’t enough of a community to sustain my interest. But in just the past week or so, I think it’s reached some sort of critical mass where this place now has a pull that keeps me coming back.
I thought I’d miss reddit more, but while I haven’t cancelled anything over there, I just don’t get on much anymore. I’d rather spend my energy building community here, and I don’t care if there are fewer people to interact with. Even reading a single thoughtful comment is enough to make my day, and that’s starting to happen regularly.
I plan on making two videos, one where I explain how Lemmy works and then how to post in a community. I'm going to do my own research but is there any points you want to give to a new user?
I am a new user. To me it felt a bit like signing up with an ISP. There's a list you can choose from, rather than there just being a single reddit.
Once you sign up with an ISP, you can go anywhere on the Internet. Similarly, once you sign up with an instance, you can go anywhere in the fediverse.
Unlike an ISP, there are no costs or fees involved in signing up, though you are more than welcome to help fund the upkeep of an instance through donations. Unlike reddit, lemmy is not a profit-driven operation trying to serve you ads all the time.
In terms of choosing an instance, bigger is not necessarily better. Personally, I went with the medium-sized lemmy.ca as I am Canadian and it seemed to make sense, and have since learned that some of the bigger instances are struggling to keep up with surging demand as people seek alternatives to reddit.
Once you have an account, you can go into Communities, click on the All tab (which lets you see the whole fediverse), and start searching for and subscribing to whatever interests you. Communities are similar to subreddits, and there's a good chance you will even find one with the same name.
