I don’t know if they implemented something against screen recording, but I use SimpleScreenRecorder. But even VLC can do screen recording using the “Stream” option.
I currently have a printer, also HP, but an old one (20 years).
When I’ll finally need a new printer, I’ll be deciding between HP and Brother. I am not sure about Linux support with Brother printers. I heard it’s great, but I need to search more. I know HPLIP works well, but I also heard these new HP printers don’t last long. Then there’s also the thing called HP+ (not to be confused with Instant Ink) that many of those printers have, which REQUIRES HP account AND a connection to internet.
Not really preferred, but I do have a printer already. A 20 years old HP PSC 1315. It still works, and I don’t even know how after my USB port replacement attempt which was also my first soldering attempt, and it ended terribly. But, it does seem to make a connection, so it works for now. I didn’t know what flux is, and I used the highest temperature, 520°C. As I said, no idea how it works, but it’s been like that for over 2 years.
It’s not perfect, but it works. It only has partial support by HPLIP, so to print in high DPI I need to use a Windows 7 VM with the drivers. That then takes 20 minutes per A4 page. The colors are quite poor and it has quite large borders. If scanning anything with color, I need to play with contrast and saturation in Scan2PDF, otherwise most colors are just invisible.
On the plus side, I found an app called NokoPrint that allows me to print from Android phone using this printer via USB.
So yeah, that smart tank would have been much better, but there would also be extra e-waste. I can deal with this printer. Actually, I got this from e-waste, so I even saved some. Also, they took it with extended warranty and some insurance, making it €207!!! I don’t want such an expensive gift.
Hmm… ProtonVPN team solved this in better way. They put the repo configuration stuff into DEB file, so it’s just a matter of double clicking it and clicking install on Debian-based and Ubuntu-based (I know Ubuntu is Debian-based) distros and then installing the ProtonVPN client through either GUI or CLI package manager, whichever you wish to use. More newbie-friendly.
Unfortunately, I also just learned they dropped support for Arch Linux :(
We’d love to support the new app for arch Linux but honestly we’re understaffed and don’t have the bandwidth to be supporting the same distros that we did before with the previous client (4 packages before vs 10 packages now). If anyone from the community is willing to make AUR packages for themselves and publish/maintain them we’re totally fine with that, as long as people keep in mind that it would be an unofficial version because we currently don’t support arch Linux with the new v4 app.
Oh, I forgot about DNS servers. Then I remember:
8.8.8.8 - Google
9.9.9.9 - Quad9
1.1.1.1 and 1.0.0.1 - Regular Cloudflare
1.1.1.2 and 1.0.0.2 - Cloudflare “Malware blocking”
1.1.1.3 and 1.0.0.3 - Cloudflare “Malware and adult content blocking”
45.90.30.180 and 45.90.28.180 - NextDNS
And I think 2960:fe::fe is also Quad9, but I’ll have to check. Nope, it’s 2620:fe::fe. So just the ones above.
But if you do care about the quality, then you should just download those movies in higher quality than DVD. Like this you’re just getting 480p/576p with visible compression artifacts at the same file size.
I am still sad my laptop from 2007 (Compal FL90) died earlier this year. It was still pretty powerful, and really full of ports. I could even add USB3 ports with express card if I wanted to. And unlike with modern laptops, the keyboard had some travel.
Currently I use HP 255 G7. I wasn’t using it because that old laptop simply suited me better. It’s fine, but… I am still looking for a cheap used ThinkPad. But it does have a DVD drive, so that’s nice (yes, I do use that).
Not sure what to recommend. Last year I spent it by listening to taxi drivers wishing happy new year to each other via their radios using SDR. But that was more like just 2 minutes as the new year came. Still, plenty of drunk phone calls around 1am.
Anyway, that’s probably not much of a fun activity, and it’s not likely you have SDR either.
Probably just watch some movies, order some better (in taste, not quality) food and enjoy those. Maybe go fire some quiet fireworks like fountains, if you fancy those. I say the “quiet” bit as a dog owner.
