smh they should have moved to global cooling, then we wouldn’t be in this situation. Next time you are upset about the temperature just know that there were rows of homes just waiting there, but nooooo you had to be equal and give climate change a try. See how that worked out don’tcha?
When I switched my family from predatory directv, this was obviously a question I had, and I ended up going with chromecasts (gen 2 and 3/ultra). Once I showed them how to use their phone as the controller, it immediately clicked, which was fantastic. I thought about an atv or an android box, but that would involve multiple profiles and remembering to switch when someone else wanted to use it (android TV boxes have this buried in the system settings; and I’m the only one with an apple account). Ads were a showstopper for me too, so the pictures/art on the cc when idle was great.
So, I’m not new to this (omg it’s been 6+ years now wtf) but I don’t host a lot of stuff, and it’s been pretty easy to poke at; I’ve got:
plex
minecraft (bedrock and java)
freshrss
rustdesk
home assistant
vaultwarden
pihole
actual (budget software)
Running in docker containers, along with a few of the built-in plug-and-play services on my nas. Of that list, plex, minecraft, freshrss, rustdesk, and vaultwarden were very easy to setup in my situation. Rustdesk is a really good remote control program/service, vaultwarden is a fork of the bitwarden server, and plex was almost comically simple to get going as a media host.
I have searched for stuff in AHK, VB.net (helping a friend poke at code), and Lua (game stuff for myself), and it’s been okay, but I don’t code ‘real’ things anymore, kinda burnt out as a hobby a few years ago. I’m stateside.
