Nothing. Companies will just spend a hair more money finding ways to circumvent the new taxes. And, if the new taxes were not easily circumvented- they would just relocate the company to another country with lower taxes.
In the end, the consumer is paying the taxes, and not the company itself, either way.
Sorry… watching a sponsored video for world of tanks for the 10th time, or simply safe, or whatever other garbage is there isn’t going to make me want to purchase it.
I value my time… If I didn’t use sponsor block, I’m still going to skip right past it… This, just does it for me.
Okay so yesterday, I changed my password as a precaution because of the hack, and just now I decided to clean my browser tabs and re login and almost forgot my password. I’m done dealing with passwords....
Not- actually accurate- There IS a karma system. I can lookup your overall post karma, both positive and negative. I can lookup your comment karma. Separated by positive and negative.
Its just not exposed through the Lemmy UI currently. I will note, kbin does who is upvoting and downvoting posts as well.
Personally, I prefer Lemmy over Kbin because I hate karma and reputation points. I do not want to worry about downvotes, and Lemmy feels so fresh. I can post things that will receive lots of downvotes and not need to worry about losing karma.
Technically, lemmy does actually track a user’s karma.
It’s- just not exposed via the user interface… as of right now.
Kinda of like how kbin displays who upvotes and downvotes. Lemmy also tracks this data too, and can easily report on exactly who is upvoting and downvoting.
The devs… have socialist tendencies(by their own admission, their words, not mine!), and are more then happy to live on peanuts and bread while building software for the better of humanity.
However, donations to the project, do pay for their basic expenses.
Do note, HOW they are hosting, pays into this a lot.
I have a server I host things on here locally-
256G of ram, 32 cores/64 threads. 130T of storage. Nvidia Tesla GPUs. Coral TPUs. Lots of NVMe too.
It costs 20-30$ of energy, along with internet use-costs.
Hosting, something of that scale in the cloud, would be outrageously expensive. However, here in my local home-datacenter, with redundant power, internet, and everything, its honestly not that bad.
And- I assure you, there is redundancy. My lemmy had basically no downtime AFTER getting hit by a tornado, and power to the city being out for most of the week.- > lemmyonline.com/post/3751

What password manager do you recommend?
Okay so yesterday, I changed my password as a precaution because of the hack, and just now I decided to clean my browser tabs and re login and almost forgot my password. I’m done dealing with passwords....
What do you use for a domain registrar?
Since Google Domains is shutting down, I am looking for a new place to transfer my domains. What are others using for domain registration?
Why do bots try to join instances?
What's the point of paying bots to join Lemmy instances?
It would be cool to have Lemmy pen pals. Asklemmy, what are your hobbies and what's your life like?
I posted something similar before, but it did not gain too much traction, possibly due to time zones....
What is your opinion about Lemmy not having karma but Kbin having reputation points?
Personally, I prefer Lemmy over Kbin because I hate karma and reputation points. I do not want to worry about downvotes, and Lemmy feels so fresh. I can post things that will receive lots of downvotes and not need to worry about losing karma.
I need to survive for 3 days without pooping, and eating as little as possible. I can pee, but not very often. It can't take up too much space. What food do I pack?
Please don't ask why I need this....
0.18 seems to help replication
I can finally subscribe to things on lemmy.ml! (after upgrading to 0.18 rc6)...
So how does lemmy make money?
I'm not seeing any ads, and these servers certainly have a cost.... So is this place entirely donation based, or what?
Hypothetically speaking, if Reddit back tracks on their API plan and meets all of the communities expeditions- would you go back to Reddit?
I myself am really on the fence about this....
We now have official presence here! (the-eye.eu)
@ray Got it done, I’m first of the mods here and will be learning a little Lemmy over the next few weeks....
