well fuck, I thought it was the year of the Linux desktop.

Great, do whatever you want. Just shut the fuck up about it, nobody cares.

Then next paragraph…

I switched from Linux to macOS for a number of years and it was fucking awesome. Then my Macbook Pro became defective and I bought a PC and …

Well, okay. Great, why not write a whole article about your personal taste in software.

What do I use? Arch Linux.

Happens all the time with my ex who I still talk to. She’ll go on these annoying rants about someone she’s dealing with and it’s obvious to me that she’s in the wrong, but won’t listen to anything I say about it. She fixates on these pointless details that have nothing to do with her true motivations. Super annoying when she’s in one of those moods.

para-government tech companies are working as hard on that as possible, it will be soon. It doesn’t even matter if it really works, they’ll just say it does.

I mean… I wear constructing/shooting range earmuffs sometimes and I found that helps to concentrate, and also wearing them when sleeping produces a noticeably deeper rest. Great for noisy hotels. Not so sure about this system, though, unless maybe I had to nap on the street in a warzone or something.

why doesn't GNOME have a mascot??

KDE not only has 1 mascot, they have over 6 or more mascots!! Yet GNOME only has the foot, that’s interesting, they need a mascot. And made by Tyson Tan or someone with a similar art style, it would be amazing!!! But anyway GNOME is the best desktop environment and it’s better if it’s vanilla with some small...

Probably because a gnome would be silly. I presume that’s not the image they’re looking for - garden gnomes, Christmas, fairy tales.

How can I block posts from all bot accounts of specific instance? (alien.top)

I do not want to block all bots. I only want to block bots from specific instance. More specifically, the @alien.top instance is using most, if not all, bot accounts with random usernames. It uses that instance to post in communities of other instances. I thought about blocking other instances. But the main issue lies with...

I’ve wondered wtf is up with that instance. Someone floods certain communities - apple on hardware.watch for instance - with endless tech support questions, like pages and pages of them a day. Steamdeck on hardware.watch for instance has a dozen posts in the last 5 minutes, so it’s a ridiculous flood.

A few of the accounts seem more legitimate than others and actually have a history, but most just have 1 post. The questions aren’t badly written and I wonder where they come from - don’t sound like LLM, but I just don’t believe at all that 8,000 random people signed up at this Alien instance and want to ask one tech related question and then disappear. The content doesn’t seem harmful or scammy, though, they’re all things a normal person might post. Is the content copied from reddit? Is this someone’s idea of kickstarting these Lemmy communities? It’s all a bit odd.

Anyway it’s a limited number of communities these apparent bots post to, so I simply blocked those communities.

Not breathing oxygen is way more toxic, though. That will kill you in a few minutes.

Sure, I imagine off-world lifeforms having entirely different metabolism. Like when we hear “this planet has a methane atmosphere” it’s like holy cow, sounds rough, but alien entities would possibly think the same thing about our planet of water and nitrogen. Imagine how horrible it would sound to someone who was water-soluble. “H2O rains down from the sky!!”

Excessive carb intake in general can certainly contribute to metabolic syndrome and insulin resistance.

zeppo,

Thanks, but it’s not hyperbole. Vegetable starch is, as noted, only a chain of glucose molecules. It takes 1 chemical step to turn into glucose - breaking the bonds. The only thing faster is pure glucose or maltodextrin. Sucrose is a disaccharide consisting of glucose+fructose. It takes a two-step process. The glucose is absorbed, but fructose takes a much longer pathway through the liver.

There’s a dietary concept called ‘glycemic index’ which ranks foods on how fast they are absorbed into your blood stream. It’s moderated by fat, protein, and fiber content in meals, but still it’s worth looking at the basic food items. I had a hard time finding good charts that listed not only prepared foods but included sugar and starches, but check out this chart for example, or this one. Observe how on both lists, sucrose is in the upper middle, 60ish, while potatoes, corn, rice and wheat are among the highest around 100, second only to glucose and maltodextrin.

One thing about this “sugar = diabetes” thing is that people hyper focus on just sugar. Insulin acts on all digestible carbohydrates, not just sugar. Vegetable starch such as rice, corn, wheat or potatoes is just a chain of glucose molecules and is actually turned into blood glucose faster than sucrose. Eating 1 lb of potatoes is exactly the same as eating 1/4 lb of sugar, other than that it comes with some oil too.

Also it sure is annoying having type 1, which has nothing to do with that, and type 2, which does, is 24x as common.

I wouldn’t expect running a publicly accessible server on the internet to be easy or a great idea for someone not familiar with the OS they’re using. Great way to learn, though.

I know it’s a rhetorical question, but briefly. I ate a burrito in Fort Smith, stayed at a crappy motel by Fayetteville one time in the shadow of Jesus billboards, and drove through Little Rock. It was very “natural”.

My dad is like this with his hearing aids. He can basically hear nothing without them, but he’ll still try to talk to Us. So he gets them, but then says it’s too loud, so he turns it down to where he still can’t hear anything. One of them stopped working, and rather than call the doctor for a replacement, probably under warranty, he’s just like “oh that one stopped working”. So meanwhile, he’s basically impossible to communicate with, but doesn’t tell people “what did you say? I couldn’t hear you”, he just acts like he heard them and then just makes up whatever he thought they said.
