From what I understand, yes, moderation is not federated. That’s good in that instances can enforce their own mod standards, but it also means spam/harmful content has to be removed by each server individually.

No idea if there’s an appeal process but you could ask on the lemmy.world support community.

The troll thing was going on a few weeks ago but I haven’t seen any activity like that recently. I sometimes use that instance directly as well as a kbin and a couple others. I browse New generally and haven’t seen any illicit content either.

I experienced discomfort, like mild pain too. I thought maybe it was because the addition of extra sound to cancel out sound increased the total volume in a way that was inaudible, but I don’t really know the physics behind how the cancellation works. This article says it is an effect caused by pressure similar to how your ears pop at different altitudes.

why doesn't GNOME have a mascot??

KDE not only has 1 mascot, they have over 6 or more mascots!! Yet GNOME only has the foot, that’s interesting, they need a mascot. And made by Tyson Tan or someone with a similar art style, it would be amazing!!! But anyway GNOME is the best desktop environment and it’s better if it’s vanilla with some small...

Gnome Chomsky would be pretty hilarious. Kinda political though.

True, Windows had a couple characters (well, Clippy was for Office). The idea of those was a digital assistant character though, not really a mascot.

How can I block posts from all bot accounts of specific instance? (alien.top)

I do not want to block all bots. I only want to block bots from specific instance. More specifically, the @alien.top instance is using most, if not all, bot accounts with random usernames. It uses that instance to post in communities of other instances. I thought about blocking other instances. But the main issue lies with...

Great, I think as my and other people’s experience illustrates it has been a bit confusing so far, being unexplained. The byline will help a lot, I think.

Sure, it’s useful as it is as long as people check into their Lemmy accounts. I suppose I would if I signed up and was aware there might be replies waiting for me on Lemmy in addition to Reddit.

zeppo,
@zeppo@lemmy.world avatar

Yeah, I didn’t really understand the description. You sign up by authenticating with reddit, and then it automatically connects you with the same subs you have on reddit?

I see “Your account will be activated and you will be subscribed to Lemmy communities that have a reddit counterpart.” but also “create bot accounts to mirror the original accounts on a corresponding fediverse-enabled server”. Hmm.

Right, I mean, I don’t think we’d want Lemmy to just become a clone of reddit with all the same people. Not being ran by a lame corp would still be an advantage but for now I think discourse on Lemmy is higher quality and I hope it stays that way.

I was happy running my own successful website - did full stack, had a visual designer but I did everything technical from maintaining the webserver to the database to all the html, css, sql, python, PHP and JavaScript… but in retrospect it was a ridiculous amount of work for what I got paid, compared to what most people make for a tech job. I got burnt out and went back to an art career, but that wasn’t very profitable or easy. At this point I wish I maintained my tech skills but fuck, being an electrician or something would probably be way more lucrative and not more difficult.

So, I don’t know where this iron bar is coming from.

The fastest would be the glucose tablets or liquid they sell for type 1 diabetics. Honey that is crystallized is very fast too, as the crystals are pure glucose. Some candies like US Smarties are sweetened with glucose. Fruit juice and sucrose are pretty quick, still, but if I’m in a hurry, I eat potato or white rice.

Fat slows down absorption of carbohydrates, so chocolate, and to a lesser extent potato chips, are slower than pure potato or other candies with sugar.

zeppo,
@zeppo@lemmy.world avatar

Oh, cool! Like you said, the speed of absorption is a minor distraction from the greater point, which is that all carbs are essentially sugar. Slower absorption does help people with T2, but mainly eating fiber and protein makes more of a difference than the base carb source. This is just what I recall from researching this topic when I got type 1 a few years ago, and my main focus was on the most efficient way to treat low blood glucose.

zeppo,
@zeppo@lemmy.world avatar

i have type 1 and have to watch out for and treat oncoming or acute hypoglycemia. If it’s an emergency, like drooling and shivering with glucose of 35, you want the fastest possible, which would be glucose tabs/gel or honey. Pure potato or white rice potato is right up there. For preventative maintenance, if I seem to be dipping, I prefer things like cheetos or corn chips and salsa because it’s more enjoyable. If you were experiencing symptoms of hypoglycemia (which typically would not happen to a regular person without massive aerobic exercise stress or long starvation) you’d want the fastest method possible. I have type 1 so I have a CGM and manual blood monitor, and most people don’t have those insights. Anyway, I take potato chips with me everywhere I go.

SMTP in general is a pain to configure. I ran my own mail servers for a while and finally gave up and used a 3rd party service. Too many problems with antispam restrictions, and things like I’d finally get it configured, upgrade postfix or whatever and then it would all be screwed again.

zeppo,
@zeppo@lemmy.world avatar

I haven’t tried to get community tech support on Lemmy, so I wouldn’t know what it’s like firsthand. If people are really that difficult, sure, that sucks. But it sounds like the person asking needs to work on more fundamental linux skills than something specific to running a Lemmy instance, and the internet is full of information about that.

I try to just not buy things that can’t be put in the dishwasher.

I went to some hipster restaurant and got a fried chicken sandwich. The piece of chicken was… weird, about the size and shape of a baseball. Perfect in the outside but the inside was kind of wobbly like thick jello. I’m not sure who tf deep fries a 4 inch thick piece of chicken and doesn’t just cut it in two.

Also one time we went to this Mexican restaurant and the beef in the tacos was clearly soft and pink like it had barely been cooked at all. They told us it was their “seasoning” that made it look like that…

zeppo,
@zeppo@lemmy.world avatar

That’s one Mexican restaurant for every 1.1 million people

Home cooked corn tortillas. (lemmy.world)

I say home cooked because with prepackaged masa it’s literally “add water” to prepare. It doesn’t take very long to make but since the flavor of the mass produced masa is very similar to some premade corn tortillas I usually only make them when I’m out of premade tortillas. In my opinion azul masa does have a better...

zeppo,
@zeppo@lemmy.world avatar

Yeah, their masa comes wet like dough, so it’s sold in the refrigerated section. The kit sounds cool! I’ve met them at a farmer’s market and they seemed like good people.

White rice in the US is enriched with various vitamins, in a sad attempt to replace the nutrition stripped from milling away the outer part and bran. Better to just eat brown rice, though it also has more arsenic. Ah, isn’t modern food lovely.

zeppo,
@zeppo@lemmy.world avatar

Sure. I just meant as far as rice goes. Quinoa is a good one, or amaranth, buckwheat or even corn.

zeppo,
@zeppo@lemmy.world avatar

It was a very average burrito in a sit-down Mexican restaurant, one of those places that has a nice building and atmosphere but seems to cater to a midwestern palate. I think it was La Huerta Grill. Probably would have been better any state to the Southwest of there. Looking at the map now, if I was there again, I’d go to a pupusa place… those are always super good.
