@0x520@slrpnk.net avatar

I would be on here more if you could block entire instances. If its possible at this point, its not as straight forward as mastodon.

CheddarBiscuits,

You can do that on the Connect app for Android.

CalicoJack,

Some of the apps can do that (Connect for one), but it isn’t a core Lemmy feature yet.

archchan,

Lemmy v0.19 will have this feature

Corigan,

You do this in sync as well

AlexWIWA,

Yeah I wish I could silence the star trek instance. I don’t want to block them though, they’re nice people. I just have never watched star trek so I have no idea what any of their posts mean, so having them in my feed is not desirable.

Now I understand how my friends feel when I talk about Halo lore.

0x520,
@0x520@slrpnk.net avatar

I love star trek, so I love that instance, but Lemmy.world feels like its replicating the toxic discussion style from reddit. I’m not here because I loved reddit but hate what they did to it. I have hated reddit for years, I am here for a completely different thing from reddit. The slrpnk instance and the Lemmy.ml are the main instances I want to interact with. If there are other anarchist instances in the future, I’d like to interact with those, but ideally keep the toxic bullshit to a minimum.

AlexWIWA,

For sure no disrespect to star trek fans. I’ve just never watched it. I don’t want to block the people I just want to filter out the memes I don’t understand.

Glaumo,

When you first saw Halo, were you blinded by its majesty?

AlexWIWA,

Blinded?

But yes absolutely. I vividly remember the first time I saw that menu at a friend’s house. Actual core memory for me

GrindingGears, (edited ) to memes in Why? Are we not doing enough?

Why does this matter? Do we need to appease the shareholders or something? Do we need endless month over month growth, lest the world completely stops turning?

Do we need SYNERGIES??!!!?

Gorilladrums,

It just signals that this platform is flawed to the point where it’s bleeding to death. Keep in mind, a bigger userbase = more active community = better platform.

TAG,
@TAG@lemmy.world avatar

If there are no users, there will be no new contents added.

If there are a lot of users (many more than there are now), there will be enough people around to support all sorts of niche communities, like Reddit had.

Robust_Mirror,

Active user count is probably the single most important metric to whether a platform is successful and stays alive. Even above quality of content, as proven by many other social media platforms that thrive despite being flooded with trash content.

No one wants to hang out in a ghost town.

Abnorc,

As a Lemmy shareholder, I’m outraged. If Lemmy doesn’t get more users soon, I am going to stop the thrusters that keep the world turning. You have been warned.

Death_Equity, to memes in Why? Are we not doing enough?

The people who don’t want to stick with Lemmy are the people we don’t want on Lemmy.

I see this as a win.

Dicska,

While that’s true, I find it a bit sad that I have posted a question in the community of a 200000+ population city 3 months ago, and it’s still the most recent post.

Acoltc, (edited )

Honestly I still use Reddit quite a bit because Lemmy just doesn’t have the content that Reddit does.

Lemmy’s left-leaning communities and tech communities are active but past that it is a ghost town. I think that’s why a lot of people did not stay.

I have also experienced bullying and harassment here that I had never experienced on Reddit and I do wonder if other people experienced similar and left because of that.

interdimensionalmeme,

Please be safe inhaling this much copiun is dangerous

EurekaStockade,

Right? People want to turn this into reddit.

Have… have they they seen reddit?

I prefer things without powermods, corporate and government influence, profit motives, censorship, groupthink, karma farming, excessive banning, etc etc.

If people really miss an endless content feed then they can just switch to one of the social media giants - it’ll only take a couple of clicks - and Keep Lemmy Good.

Gorilladrums,

Out of privacy/tech bros and far left extremists, there’s nothing else on this site. This place doesn’t appeal to the general public because there’s nothing here for them.

GTG3000, to memes in Why? Are we not doing enough?

Less content, that is spread across multiple instances that can have duplicate communities.

You just can’t keep doomscrolling here, the “active” search repeats all the time and the “best of the day” is like two pages.

And then there’s specific communities that just… Stayed on Reddit.

Lt_Cdr_Data,

It’s not just that. Most people here are into far left, anti-capitalist bs and people don’t care to deal with that

Alfonsio,

I like it here because of the far left anti-capitalist bs. The internet is full of edgy incel nazis and it’s pretty relieving to have some safe spaces 🤷‍♂️

Cowbee,

People clearly support that, and it makes sense, considering Lemmy’s founder is a Communist and decentralization appeals to Leftists.

spectre,

Yeah if that’s a bad vibe to someone Lemmy might not be the best fit.

Acoltc,

And that’s why it is losing users.

spectre,

Yeah, quality of community over quantity, it’s a non-issue.

EvolvedTurtle,

I actually like lemmy for the fact I can’t doom scroll Makes it easier to put down and touch grass

Cowbee,

Yep, it’s been a massive improvement for me over Reddit on that end. No more doomscrolling, no more literally endless fights with strangers (still some ofc, but grass touching is back on the menu).

GTG3000,

Well, perhaps that is healthier.

But it doesn’t trap eyeballs.

gohixo9650,

Less content, that is spread across multiple instances that can have duplicate communities.

on top of that, there redundant communities that are unnecessary even in the same instances. For example there is the android@ and the askandroid@. The first one has a decent amount of subscribers while the second one has a single digit number. I wanted to ask a question, I posted in the first one since it would make sense to reach more people. The post got deleted and I was told to go to the other one. In the first one they were posting only news articles.

This is ridiculous. Splitting communities in such way was the result of the huge traffic that such communities had in the past in other platforms. This makes sense only when the traffic is so huge that it is practically chaotic to navigate and moderate between news/articles and support questions. When both communities combined have 50 subscribers, such split only harms the platform and the users.

Everyone wanted to migrate by bringing an identical environment to what they had used to. However this should be adaptable to the current situation instead of directly copying it.

GTG3000,

I think some people expected their entire community to get up and move.

spectre, (edited )

The post got deleted and I was told to go to the other one. In the first one they were posting only news articles

Ill call it garbage reddit-brain moderation. The reason for an /ask~ comm is cause your main comm is flooded with repeated questions that would stifle discussion. It’s also not a good solution to that problem, not too mention they don’t have enough users to be having that problem.

The way you form a community is to discuss the same things over and over until a hivemind develops, it’s a good thing to have a group consensus, not that individuals can’t disagree. Now the crappy moderation is gonna cultivate a crappy subreddit vibe instead of something better.

bignate,

I actually found that I really like the “hot” scrolling so much better. On Reddit, everything I came across had ~hundreds of comments and everything was multiple hours old. I didn’t feel like I could contribute at all. But here… it feels a lot smaller, and most of the “hot” posts are not rubbish, so I feel like I can actually contribute!

GTG3000,

Well for me, the real content of Reddit was finding an interesting thing and then reading a few dozen comments from people really in the know.

Here it’s going to be a dozen top-level comments and maybe one of them will have a thread longer than three messages.

The_Picard_Maneuver, (edited ) to memes in Why? Are we not doing enough?
@The_Picard_Maneuver@startrek.website avatar

As someone who posts a ton, I’ve noticed that a lot of people seem to check the top posts once a day or so. Posts can be slow to get engagement and traction, but the ones that become super active still seem to hit similar peaks as before (1-2k upvotes, hundreds of comments).

But yeah, people aren’t as actively engaged and commenting on everything all day like they used to on reddit. The framework is here, and I think if there were another big exodus, Lemmy is set up to be a great landing point.

GarbageShoot,

I think part of it is that if someone comes here looking for a Reddit substitute, they will be disappointed, but if they come here looking for something extremely distinct from Reddit, they will also be disappointed. A lot of fediverse stuff is basically an inferior Reddit clone and that problem was compounded by the huge wave of Ledditors basically hijacking the culture of multiple instances to just exercise their Reddit habits, making the comparison even more obvious and poor.

Lemmy needs to eat populations that aren’t too big in order to metabolize them properly. Anything beyond that is going to get ejected along with some of what it could have handled if it was just that, and this will remain how it works until Lemmy figures out how to push people much harder to engage differently with it than with Reddit.

Franzia,

But on the other hand reddits comments were frequently shallow and full of annoying jokes. I love reading Lemmy!

RoseTintedGlasses,
@RoseTintedGlasses@lemmy.blahaj.zone avatar

Yeah, I much prefer Lemmy to Reddit, it’s nice to be in a thread and not just see people repeating a load of dumb jokes they’ve all seen a thousand times back to each other like it gets any funnier the 1,001st time they hear it. And like that’s leaving aside how right wing it is and there was always a certain current of racism just below the surface in basically any politics sub and a load of popular seemingly apolitical subs

UnRelatedBurner,

This. Quality over quantity. There are much more walls of text, but it’s filled with information and humanity. Reddit just became another Meta platform, but for niches. Lemmy has great communities, but all are tech and anti-big-corpo related, I feel right at home :p, but I understand that most don’t.

AlexWIWA,

Pun threads on Reddit are the worst. I thought they were funny and clever… In 2009…

I find this all very irrelevant. I deleted reddit, account and all, and have never felt better. If I need to tell you you’re great more to keep people here, then I will.

Hey, you’re great!

Thanks.

Trollception,

I love lemmy but I was researching some home audio receivers this weekend and had to resort to Reddit. There’s just not nearly as much information on lemmy. But for some quick entertainment it’s entirely replaced Reddit for me.

trk, to memes in Why? Are we not doing enough?
@trk@aussie.zone avatar

I see more people complaining on Lemmy about problems than I do the actual problems they’re complaining about.

Just use the thing, and put the content and comments you want on it? You don’t have to be a passive observer just staring out the window as monkeys dance for you. Be the monkey. Dance how you want. Eat a banana. Fling poo if that’s what you want. Just stop expecting everyone else to create your dream routine and then having a sook because they step-pause-turn-pause-pivot-step-paused when you wanted them to step-pause-turn-pause-pivot-step-step.

GOOD post

IzyaKatzmann,

I believe I have the same experience you have, I think others have a different experience and it makes me curious as to why, I think there might be something interesting there and ignoring it or treating it minimally doesn’t seem to be ideal. If there’s a different kind of lemmy experience or set of interactions, I want to know, what is it?

zyratoxx, (edited ) to memes in Why? Are we not doing enough?
@zyratoxx@lemm.ee avatar

Tbf, I have like 7 accounts and I’m currently only using 2 or 3 since Lemmy servers are much more stable than they used to be

IzyaKatzmann,

i have 2, syncing accounts some way between instances (maybe subscribe lists) would be nice.

Chetzemoka,

Oh I hadn’t even thought of that. I have two accounts because when I started using Boost for Lemmy, my home instance wasn’t supported, so I signed up for startrek.website.

My old account would appear to be an inactive user in the numbers, which is not really accurate. But also it means that bump in users that happened during the reddit exodus was partially driven by duplicate sign ups.

mtchristo, (edited ) to memes in Why? Are we not doing enough?

We should be more active to keep this ship afloat. Don’t be stingy with the comments.

Ok. I’m convinced.

interdimensionalmeme,

You mean stingyv not stringy

But if I give my opinion on Pokemon’s, my server will get defederated, so I’ll keep quiet.

Cowbee, to memes in Why? Are we not doing enough?

I prefer social media not based on addiction. Lemmy has been much better for my lifestyle, than my reddit addiction.

MycelialMass,

So true, lemmy provides me with just enough stuff to feel like I saw enough memes, got some news, etc. but then I can just put it down and do other stuff. My interneting / doomscrolling is waaay lower than it was before.

crawancon,

this is an excellent point. perhaps the slowness of the content here is helping those of us who’ve been on reddit forever and are used to just doom scrolling through endless content.

i spend less time here but I feel I get more direct ‘value’ when I do. it’s more small business feel than condy nast breathing margins down the user community’s throats(pre and post gold eras)

I quit the R word cold turkey re: API and now toggle between this and kbin but lemmy with eternity app has been the best baconreader withdrawal breaker for me.

to the fediverse and beyond!

Cowbee,

Yep! Great points!

Another big point is that it’s a rejection of the profit motive, ie there’s not even a “small business” feeling like you say for me, but a far more genuine feeling. Nobody has tried to sell me anything here yet.

crawancon,

you’re right, but I have seen some of the hustles from outside setting up shop here.

if the audience becomes large enough, there will be marketing.

unfortunately inevitable

RandomVideos, to memes in Why? Are we not doing enough?

People are leaving lemmy because of the quality of the apps

They are used to using a terrible app that often breaks and spams you with notifications of random posts

mihor,

Notifications should be banned by law.

RandomVideos,

Cant you just not allow notifications? They can be useful

mihor,

In majority of cases they’re abused to keep users engaged.

crawancon,

nothing is stopping you friend!

Gorgritch_umie_killa,

I know your joking, but can i hijack your comment a bit. Your comment kind of reflects my thoughts when i joined Lemmy.

I like Perth, so I made that my ‘thing’ to contribute to Lemmy. So I echo the other commentor, “be the change”, and have a ‘thing’ that you do here.

It’s helped me stay way more engaged, and have way more fun on here than I ever did on Reddit. If it’s turtles cool! If its something else, also cool!

Artyom, (edited ) to memes in Why? Are we not doing enough?

Coulda fooled me, the content quality has continued to climb, and that’s all that matters. Look at this post, it’s an original meme only relevant to this community, and it’s blowing up.

JazzGRaffe,

I get a bit annoyed with a hit meme being reposted 5+ times across instances, it clogs the main feed with repetition and only artificially increases the post numbers while making the whole experience less good. I did enjoy the comment-stacking meme yesterday where everyone added their own take. There are a few news-posting bots that post the exact same articles and cause the clogging repetitive main feed that makes the app far less interesting as well. It gets a bit depressing seeing the same inflammatory headlines 3-4 times, ie “35 blind fingerless coal-mining orphans bombed in Gaza strip hospital, why isn’t Joe Biden doing anything?” While reporting is important, the repetition of some themes seems astroturf-y. I also get really annoyed with the bots posting NSFW/ extremely explicit sex content/ads on main feeds. I have been here less because of these things.
