joewilliams007, to privacy in How to get a private car
@joewilliams007@kbin.melroy.org avatar

Just buy a used car. Look for low KM and good climate rating.

Why care for privacy when in the end your using android auto or apple play?

And a home assistant breaks the point even further.

Akasazh,
@Akasazh@feddit.nl avatar

I bought a 2015 Dacia. It’s just smart enough that it let’s you connect a device through Bluetooth, however it’s not smart in any other way. It’s barely got kilometers (sub 1k) and will last me a while.

Not a home assistant. Home Assistant™, the open source privacy focused home automation system.

HumanPerson, (edited )

As I said, it is for a family member. I agree about buying used.

I think android auto can be reasonably private with Graphene OS’s implementation.

I don’t know what you are saying about Home Assistant.

Aldi.

The correct procedure if you thought the experiment posed an imminent danger to the crew would have been to erect a force field around the container until any ill effects could be scientifically determined.

You also violated Starfleet protocols which require us to not interfere with developing cultures.

erev,

I’m not certain that it was the type of culture you’re thinking of. and i didn’t want to put a force field around the fridge. i have stuff in there too.

PrinceWith999Enemies,

YBI still.

Transporting the container to the medical bay or science lab would permit the use of force fields whose emitters can be highly focused, permitting containment of the container in question without interfering with the lunches of you or your other crewmates. I’m not sure what emitter configurations are available in your mess hall, but the labs clearly are able to handle such and do so regularly.

We also have learned through unfortunate and perhaps overly-repeated experiences to not make assumptions about unknown cultures. I can’t even recall the number of captain’s logs I’ve read where little blinking lights or some weird rock thing or glowing space object turned out to be intelligent.

I think you are required to document the incident and report it to your commanding officer.

NFS over WireGuard is probably going to be the best when it comes to encrypted file shares without the need to set up Kerberos. Just set up the WireGuard tunnel and export over those ips.

No problem. It should be wayyy faster than sshfs for the record. Both NFS and WireGuard are best in class tools.

I think for me, it’s because it’s sort-of (though not!) self-archiving.

If a site has a reasonable amount of popularity and subscriptions, it would take that site going down, plus all the sites that communicated with it, for the data to be fully lost.

Not to mention that a lot of the sites are run by reasonably altruistic people, who are more likely to hand over than just shutter.

I’ve setup wireguard, because it’s only me and an employee using the services. But with that, externally I don’t even seem to have a port open. But wireguard is so fast to be online, that I’m just always connected as soon as I’m online - using a domain and an IP update script

BearOfaTime,

Something like Wireguard, Tailscale (uses Wireguard but provides easier administration), Reverse Proxy, VPN, are the best approaches.

Since OP doesn’t need for anyone else to access, I’d use Tailscale (Wireguard if you want a little more effort). Tailscale has a full self-host option with Headscale, though I have no problem with letting them provide discovery.

With Tailscale, you don’t even need the client on devices to access your Tailscale network, by enabling the Funnel feature. This does something similar to Reverse Proxy, by having a Web-exposed service hosted by Tailscale which then routes traffic (encrypted) to your Tailscale network.

naeap,
@naeap@sopuli.xyz avatar

Yeah, but then I’ve a web exposed service and I want keep a low profile as possible with what I’m exposing. So I guess as long as there aren’t many users to manage, wireguard (or a tailscale configuration) could work out for OP

ULS,

Is the funnel feature free?

kandoh, to asklemmy in How are you all making it right now with grocery store prices?

Meat = almost eliminated from my diet except for frozen ground chicken that’s 10 dollars.

Potato chips = replaced by crackers, much cheaper.

Vegetables = all frozen now

lagomorphlecture,

Have you looked into the one time expense of buying an air fryer? You can make your own chips/fries/etc which are both cheaper and healthier. Obviously you have to buy the appliance but it pays off in terms of health and groceries eventually. Like, crackers are usually loaded with crap ingredients. You could air fry some potatoes in a little spray of healthy oil for a dollar or two and do your wallet and your heart a solid AND you’re still getting your daily allotment of potatoes lol

Perhapsjustsniffit,

You don’t need the gadget. You can make these things with a normal stove and oven. As someone who cooks a lot someone gave me one of these for xmas. It’s a damn convection oven. A tiny one worth way too much money. Learn to use the appliances you have and stop with the useless gadgets.

lagomorphlecture,

It is a convection oven but most people don’t have a fancy oven with a convection oven. Yeah you can make it in the oven but it comes out better in the air fryer and mine heats in literally one minute, I can use it in summer because it doesn’t add nearly as much heat to my house, etc. It’s way more convenient than using the massive oven for a plate of fries or something and I can even cook an entire pizza in the air fryer I got using the bake setting, which again is just much easier and more convenient for me.

kandoh,

Would love one but the place I live has a 1000 watt limit before I blow a fuse.

ohwhatfollyisman, to asklemmy in What are the best steps to reduce the wealth of billionaires?

we need to change the parameters of success.

the current “world’s richest persons” list is actually the “world’s greediest persons” list. we need to all start calling it exactly that. we need to, as society, understand that having those levels of wealth is more a symptom of a sick and twisted mind rather than a consequence of “business acumen”.

the world’s richest persons list should be recalibrated to what percentage of one’s income has been given away in taxes and donations. think about it, if you can indulge in all your necessities, comforts, and luxuries on 10% of your income and still afford to give away the other 90%, are you not 9 times “richer” than you need to be?

separately, any company that turns an obscene profit has done so only by overcharging their customers. these companies should be vilified therefore, and not celebrated.

DecarbonatedOdes,

So true. And a national change in perspective is definitely achievable.

Modern_medicine_isnt,

I doubt it is really greed. They are competitive. It’s a different driver.

bazmatazable,

No matter if it is greed, competitiveness, narcissism, another personality trait or some combination of them the point was that we as a society should not consider becoming a billionaire as model behavior. By all means be the best sports player or musician or top surgeon and make as much money as you are legally allowed. Most tech billionaires are just not that impressive to justify their current net worth.

viralJ, to asklemmy in Am I the only one getting agitated by the word AI?

I remember the term AI being in use long before the current wave of LLMs. When I was a child, it was used to describe the code behind the behaviour of NPC in computer games, which I think is still used today. So, me, no, I don’t get agitated when I hear it, I don’t think it’s a marketing buzzword invented by capitalistic a-holes. I do think that using “intelligence” in AI is far too generous, whichever context it’s used in, but we needed some word to describe computers pretending to think and someone, a long time ago, came up with “artificial intelligence”.

Rikj000,
@Rikj000@discuss.tchncs.de avatar

Thank you for reminding me about NPCs,
we have indeed been calling them AI for years,
even though they are not capable of reasoning on their own.

Perhaps we need a new term,
e.g. AC (Artificial Consiousness),
which does not exists yet.

The term AI still agitates me though,
since most of these are not intelligent.

For example,
earlier this week I saw a post on Lemmy,
where a LLM suggested to a user to uninstall a package, which would definitely have broken his Linux distro.

Or my co-workers,
who asked development questions I had to the LLMs they use, which yet has to generate me something usefull / something that actually works.

To me it feels like they are pushing their bad beta products upon us,
in the hopes that we pay to use them,
so they can use our feedback to improve them.

To me they don’t feel intelligent nor consious.

Blueberrydreamer,

I would argue that humans also frequently give bad advice and incorrect information. We regurgitate the information we read, and we’re notoriously bad at recognizing false and misleading info.

More important to keep in mind is that the vast, vast majority of intelligence in our world is much dumber than people. If you’re expecting greater than human intelligence as your baseline, you’re going to have a wildly different definition than the rest of the world.

FooBarrington,

For example,
earlier this week I saw a post on Lemmy,
where a LLM suggested to a user to uninstall a package, which would definitely have broken his Linux distro.

Colleagues of mine have also recommended me uninstalling required system packages. Does that mean my colleagues aren’t intelligent/conscious? That humans in general aren’t?

I’ve been searching for lentil recipes.

TheDoctorDonna,

I put lentils in my vegetarian chili. Do chilli however you like - I prefer a bean blend over straight kidney beans- and just boil a pot of lentils and use them in place of the ground beef if your doing a quick chili. I would think you wouldn’t want them pre cooked if you’re doing a slow cook chili.

raynethackery,

Thanks. I have a recipe for chili I really like, I will give it a try.

raynethackery,

Mmm, that looks great.

lagomorphlecture,

This recipe is so good. I’m a vegetarian, not vegan, but I’m always looking for really good no meat options and this is just delicious, basically it’s beef stew flavored.

Also you can replace the meat in tacos and gyros with lentils using the same seasoning, also delicious. Just use whatever recipe you normally like for those.

You should look into chickpeas. Personally I find that lentils work great where you might use red meat and chickpeas work great where you might use white meat/chicken so you don’t even need specific recipes because you can just omit the meat and add the legumes instead.

raynethackery,

Thanks, that recipe looks delicious. I want to give lentils in pasta sauce but I’m afraid I won’t like it. I’ve tried chickpeas and I just can’t seem to like them.

@Lennnny@lemmy.world avatar

I found this one on an old man’s Instagram account. It was really nice! I subbed some of the stock for a can of IPA.

Lentil Soup Recipe

Ingredients:

1 tablespoon of olive oil
1 chopped onion
4 cloves of chopped garlic
3 medium carrots, chopped
2 stalks of celery, chopped
2 tablespoons of tomato paste
1 can of diced tomatoes
1/8 teaspoon of crushed red pepper flakes, or more to taste
1/4 teaspoon of cayenne pepper, or more to taste
1 teaspoon of smoked paprika
1 teaspoon of cumin
1 teaspoon of chili powder
1 teaspoon of salt
6 cups of chicken stock
1 cup of red lentils, rinsed and drained
1/2 cup of yellow lentils, rinsed and drained

Instructions:

Heat 1 tablespoon of olive oil in a large saucepan over medium heat.
Add onions and garlic and cook until the onion is translucent, about five minutes.
Stir in the carrots and celery and cook until the vegetables are tender, about eight more minutes.
Stir in your tomato paste, crushed red pepper, cayenne pepper (if you decide to use), salt, black pepper, smoked paprika, cumin, and chili powder.
Mix in your lentils and chicken stock.
Bring to a boil and then reduce heat to low and simmer until the lentils are soft, about 40 minutes.

raynethackery,

Thanks, I will definitely give it a try.

Step 1) plant potatoes Step 2) cry

ReiRose,

Some things can be grown at home with relative ease and not much space. A lot depends on where you are, how much space you have, your soil, if you can invest money, what spare time you can give. So either research or experimentation is key.

I live in Florida (I’m sorry I’m voting as hard as I can) and have had success with these from seeds or cut-offs from store bought items: Kiwis, passion fruit, pineapple, tomatoes, garlic, turmeric, onion, ginger. These I have bought the plant or seeds from nurseries (or Korean supermarket): Brocoli, any peppers, any dark leafy greens.

There is so much information on youtube. I found the initial time to set up a small garden is about 10- 20 hours in the first 2 weeks, then about 10-20 mins every 2 to 3 days.
