darcy, to maliciouscompliance in Can't go to the bathroom more than once per class? OK, I'll just stand outside the classroom.

Why would a teacher ban students from going to the bathroom? That's a normal bodily function. What do they expect the kid to do?

There are a lot of bad teachers unfortunately

darcy,

We used to look up to our teachers as role models. It is sad what the education system has become.

Cakein,

As a teacher, I would always let kids go. Although depending on the situation, I might say "wait a minute until -other student - comes back" or "just listen to this instruction first so you know what to do". You definitely get to know kids who ask to leave to get out of work, but rather than stopping them going, you need to work out why they are avoiding the work in the first place. Often it's anxiety about the work being too hard, or they just need a sensory break because classrooms can be overwhelming. In those cases, it's actually not that helpful to force them to stay in the situation anyway.

mdwhite999,

I wish more teachers were like you.

darcy,

You are a true gem!

"If yor employees are trying to help you, let them." Sounds like common sense, but it seems like MBAs aren't being taught common sense...

eyy,

To this day I have no idea what HR Director's thought process was. He literally declined free money for the company.

AnarchistArtificer,

It's a bit absurd.

Let's imagine OP was trying to scam the company. The sheer gall of asking for approval on a scam would be so audacious that honestly, it wouldn't be safe to have an employee like that working on anything of value. The level of "fuck you, I don't care" that it would show would mean that the safest thing to do with an employee like that would be to fire them.

The guy didn't ask the basic question of "has OP given us any reason not to trust them?" If the answer to that was "yes", then maybe flying them out to the UK to act on the company's behalf isn't a great idea. And if that doesn't seem likely, then it's probably an employee trying to help and they should be encouraged

ilovefluffyanimals,

Exactly. If I were a good executive, I'd be pretty impressed that OP was being so transparent and forthright . . . not react in that way.

ShoePaste, to asklemmy in What would you think about bots that repost content from Reddit?
@ShoePaste@lemmy.ml avatar

Nah. This is a fresh start. It's been less than a week and theres already so much more content. It'll grow soon enough. Especially with spez fucking around over there. We want og content here, not all the shit reposts that already plague reddit

Crazy. In my country this person would have been fired, and the company in trouble.

Excellent! I'm so glad I subbed. I wasn't terribly active outside a few subreddits that interested me over in the other place, so I missed like 99.98% of what communities it had. This though, brings a huge grin to my face.

Thank you

HR people tend to be extremely anti employee and see ulterior motives everywhere. They essentially never even mingle with other employees. It's such an odd career to pursue.

Love the way you worked this against HR. I had a situation kind of like yours once where we got a per diem daily for a hotel and one meal. The company let us keep the leftover money from the per diem until they hired a new manager that insisted we turn in the extra (it wasn't much maybe $5-25). Fine, we all started getting more expensive hotel rooms and spending the rest on food using every cent they gave us. . After about 2 years the guy who made us turn in the leftover money left and we went back to being able to keep the extra money.

eyy,

oh I'm sure that's a common story too!

MrVilliam,

I had a P card and would expense food on the road, so no per diem to worry about. I didn't travel super often, so I would use this opportunity to treat myself on the company dime, choosing food and drink that often went beyond the limits of what we were allowed to get. So I would just pick whatever the fuck I wanted and tell my server/bartender that I was gonna be splitting my solo check: $X on company card, everything else including tip on my personal card. I'd get whiskey or beer or wine and steak or lamb or something like that. I would wind up with excellent meals for like $10 out of pocket. But because I rarely traveled, my company mileage and fuel costs were like 5% of everybody else's in my district, so my monthly expense reports were almost always under $1k (usually more like $300) while everybody else was routinely $5-10k. So thankfully, nobody was dumb enough to give me a slam dunk malicious compliance story haha.

Harpuajim, to maliciouscompliance in [REPOST] You can't continue working from home because you go idle in chat too often

You should get a mouse jiggler.

fhein,

Probably ought to get something that physically moves the mouse then. It's pretty common for companies to install software that monitors running programs etc., and if they keep track of how often you go idle on Teams they probably would find it suspicious if you have mouse jiggler running on your computer.

evistre,

Mouse jiggler that sits underneath your mouse. Plug your mouse into the work computer, plug the jiggler into something else.

I’m a remote employee in a similar position, I also finish my work in about 3-4 hours in any given day (mileage varies). My performance reports have been at a consecutive 100% and I don’t see why I should change my ways. Honestly I don’t give a damn if people think I’m slacking off if I go and do some gardening during the day, if anything finishing my work early just makes me very productive :)

dystop,
@dystop@lemmy.world avatar

We use Teams and if I notice that I’ve been on the yellow idle icon for too long I’ll give my mouse a jiggle, at which point I see all my colleagues are on idle too… it’s a very relaxed environment. I hope you can continue working remotely in the future!

PiedPipetter,

The problem with Team is it goes yellow when IT'S idle, not you. That was a big adjustment when we went to Teams, understanding that someone can be furiously working away at their computer while Teams is reporting yellow. You send them a message and BAM it goes green when they see the notification and read your message. Pretty ridiculous, really, since the bulk of the software is all Microsoft...why can't Outlook tell Teams, "Hey, she's writing an email, the icon says green, silly."

dystop,
@dystop@lemmy.world avatar

I think the standard trick is to use the "Away" status permanently, so it'll never switch you to Idle!

Regarding that part of the second edit: a very wise colleague of mine with managerial duties once told me that he expects people to give 50 to 70% every day. First, it’s unsustainable to give 100% all the time, and burnout has far worse direct and indirect consequences than simply scaling the operation up to allow more slack time. Second, when shit actually hits the fan and you need all hands on deck, there’s no more that can be given if you were already giving it 100%

theblueredditrefugee,

A good example of how capitalists want exclusive ownership of your time, even to the detriment of productivity.

No kidding! It's like they don't even care about profit, they just want to hurt people
