I cringe every time when someone compares a single Windows version to a whole distribution, and some of them even have more versions than Windows.

bouh, to linuxmemes in Look at that fragmentation!

That’s mostly fluff though. Like you show, the core is either Linux or bsd and gnu, and then you have a handful of families.

That’s not fragmentation, that’s freedom.

And compatibility is a big factor too. Because of gnu and posix basically, almost anything that works on one distro will work on another.

Imagine if each distro was completely locked from anything on another one. That would be fragmentation, and we wouldn’t be talking about it, because it would be shit.

Now, I’m wondering if we have a thriving Desire Paths (that’s what these paths are called) community somewhere on here.

I said a thriving community. There hasn’t been a post there in three months.

Be the change you want to see in the world.

FriendBesto,

Don’t know but that sounds like a great idea of one. LOL

I wish there was more variety.

You basically have BSD and Linux and in the Linux space {glibc/musl systemd/openrc/runit PKGBUILD,ebuild, deb, rpm} which seems like a lot but it’s the really niche stuff that’s fun to pull apart and play with.

Variety is the spice of life.

Sometimes I answer this question somewhat honestly, much to people’s horror. I try to leave it at “I got of bed”, which still seems to disturb them…

surewhynotlem,

My favorite is “still kickin”. The Norwegians sometimes say “awake and not crying”.

burgermeister,

My favorite response is “standard”

Kusimulkku,

My distro didn’t make the cut. That meme is just the tip of the iceberg…

Let me guess: Hannah Montana?

I think this is more a case of the triangle inequality in metric spaces, as you don’t have to calculate any particular edge to see the shortcut, as well as that it applies to any even non-rectangular triangle.

petersr, (edited )

But if you want to know your saving, you will need to dust off the old formula. And if you do, you find the maximum saving to be around 41% (in the case of isosceles right triangle where the hypotenuse is a factor of sqrt 2 shorter).

dQw4w9WgXcQ,

This is actually a case of the Cauchy-Scwartz inequality: en.m.wikipedia.org/…/Cauchy–Schwarz_inequality
