I don’t get it

Zorque,

It's what real lions do when taking over a pride.

this_1_is_mine,

Ain’t taken care of no bodies kids but his.

Don't female lions do most/all of the hunting and child rearing anyway?
Male lions don't do shit but fight with other male lions (and kill cubs.)

Catoblepas,

Male lions hunt a lot more than previously thought, they just do it at night when it’s hard to observe it happening without special equipment.

Male lions only stay with a given pride for 2-3 years on average before getting kicked out, so every month the lionesses spend nursing another lion’s cubs reduces the amount of time he has to make his own cubs.

hardaysknight,

It means no worries

@hark@lemmy.world avatar

Yep, this magnified lion population issues since poachers would kill the lion and then a new one would step in, killing all the cubs, but then he’d also get poached and the process would repeat before cubs could grow.

kakes,

Huh, TIL.

pdxfed, (edited )

So what is the normal natural balance to males killing their offspring? Obviously more pregnant lions is good genetic trait to have, but dead babies does not reenter gene pool. Super aggressive moms to defend against dad?

prettybunnys,

The strong protector prevents his cubs from being killed, preventing a new male from moving in.

This selects for genetically superior males OR younger more vigorous males.

Experience tips the balance of power so that youth can’t just win.

The natural balance is that the male isn’t removed from the equation before the equation can be written on the board.

hark,
@hark@lemmy.world avatar

Female lions better at defense or male lions that are better at not getting poached, I guess.

Anakin would be proud.

dukk,

I laughed. Well done.

MajorHavoc,

Oh! I thought I recognized Mufasa’s voice…

I’m sure Emacs can reproduce.

kautau,

Yeah there’s an elisp file for that somewhere

SubArcticTundra, (edited )
@SubArcticTundra@lemmy.ml avatar

Wait, I just realized that that exists. It’s called a quine. I trust that the Founding Fathers of Emacs were genius enough to make it a quine.

homo_ignotus,

No, it’s GNU Emacs.

In order to contribute a fix, you have to reproduce a bug.

Kusimulkku, to linuxmemes in It doesn’t even take special talents to do!

It doesn’t take special talents to reproduce—even plants can do it. On the other hand, contributing to a program like Emacs takes real skill. That is really something to be proud of.

It helps more people, too.

LMAO

I assumed this meant reproducing the same functionality in a new editor instead of contributing to Emacs, the reality is so much better

mkwt,

It took me a few minutes to figure out what your Picassoesque reindeer was. I thought it was some kind of deformed moose.

I don’t mean to be negative though … the content and writing is great … it’s just the image of the reindeer was distracting for a minute before I could look through the rest of the comic.

    RaoulDook, to comicstrips in They aren't boards, and they don't hover!

    Back in my day, we didn’t have no dang hoverboards, and hoverboards were a thing of the future from 2015 when Marty McFly would fly across the silver screen on his one true hoverboard. I spent the best years of my life working on anti-gravity technology with the hope that I could one day too fly like Marty, on a real hoverboard, but now I just sit in my own graveyard of failed dreams while the kids are zoomin’ around on their wheely-scooters and calling them hoverboard. Thanks Obama!

    2016

    They said 2015 but anyone with half a brain gets why they lied about exactly which year they were in. And if you and got that then: Cubs

    Anticorp,

    Obama has probably received more thanks than any person since Jesus.

    Though don’t get me started on how many things are called “holograms.”

    Pepper’s ghost isn’t a hologram. It’s just a reflection with more steps.
