I am calling them this exclusively from now on.

frickineh, to science_memes in Birding for Botanists

I feel like even a botanist would know a seagull because their assholery is so epic. The seagull’s assholery, not the botanists’, that is.

phorq,

Yeah, but don’t give them the credit. I’ll never forgive them for shitting on me that one time (botanists that is…)

turtlepower, to science_memes in It's a sample. For my desk.

Geologists always playing with their rocks while looking at gneiss cleavage and schist.

BloodSlut, to science_memes in Listen, Susan. It's a valid theory, just look at the damn thing.

but imagine how fuckin cool it would be if they were

Klear, (edited )

Sadly it’s the other way around. Tree stumps are nothing but small rock formations. How disappointing.

EllyEinhorn,

It wood be really cool.

It's crazy to think about how long it took to get more than one-cell life!

Falsifiably so.

metaStatic,

so better science than most of modern physics

Vodka may be one of the worst things for a potato to become. Fries? Mashed with gravy? Poutine? Chips/crisps? Come on.

Oakification is just the plant version of crabification

drolex, (edited )

Would you care to expand on that?

ETA: sorry for those who answered already (thanks), my comment was about the oakification part. I am well aware of the crabification, being a crab myself

DragonTypeWyvern,

A ludicrous theory when crabs merely wish they could match the might of the beetle empire.

It was a joke. I don’t think oakification is real.

rockerface,

That’s what an oak would say

drolex,

Too late, I’m scared of becoming an oak now

It is actually a Brassica Oleracea cultivar.

JoYo, to science_memes in Mossie birbs!!
@JoYo@lemmy.ml avatar

That’s prob the least of their concern given the evolutionary pressures to disguise the nest from above.

Cuckoos are probubly about.

ThatWeirdGuy1001,
@ThatWeirdGuy1001@lemmy.world avatar

I think the funniest part about cuckoo’s is that they can’t be bothered to parent their offspring but some will still hang around just to make sure the host is taking care of the cuckoo’s chicks.

Like if the host bird notices the cuckoo chick and tries to not feed it the cuckoo will harass the host bird and try to kill the other chicks.

JoYo,
@JoYo@lemmy.ml avatar

The cuckoo arms race is facinating.

Some birds have developed specialized patterns in their young and specialized movements to prove they are not cuckoos. Cuckoos have developed mimicking patterns and movements as a result.

The_v, to science_memes in Birding for Botanists

This meme is incorrect. A botatist would have names like:

“Little bastard who ate my Alyssum maritimum

“Fucker who at the flower buds on my Forsythia europea

“Little shithead who dug up my Lathyrus odoratus

LongbottomLeaf,

Correct. Also,

“Poops seeds of…”

“Nests in…”

One of my favorite part of planet earth was when they showed a fox steal baby chicks from a bunch of birds. At first I hated the fox but then it showed that the fox was doing it to feed their hungry children. It really taught me about perspective.
