Squirrel, in Does anyone else struggle with silence, particularly when trying to sleep?
@Squirrel@thelemmy.club avatar

I need a fan or white noise. Silence is just “eeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee” until I fall asleep.

NENathaniel, in What's the point of buying new phones every years?

I like having high-end cameras and screens on my phones.

I keep my phones in excellent condition and sell them whenever I upgrade, which doesn’t make it a crazy expensive process.

neko, in What genres of music do Lemmites enjoy?

Cold wave, no wave, post rock, uplifting trance, mutant disco, freak folk

dgrabla, in What password manager do you recommend?

Hummm am I the only one using ‘pass’ ?

lntl,
@lntl@lemmy.sdf.org avatar

You’re not alone

Schnaftator,

What I don’t like about pass is that every entry is visible in the file system. An attacker needs just a directory listing to know where I have accounts.

SeaJ, in Does anyone actually enjoy working out?

I have recently started to enjoy taking bike rides. I used to do it before with friends and didn’t mind it but it was not super enjoyable. It likely had to do work the fact that they would always do 40 mile bike rides that had a decent amount of hills. None of us have time for bike rides that long anymore. But a nice 10 mile bike ride is a nice but of time to just clear my head and enjoy looking one way and seeing the Cascades and looking the other way and seeing the Sound and the Olympics.

I have heard of runner’s high and read a good explanation for it that I don’t remember. Regardless, I don’t get runner’s high and honestly hate running. Even with a podcast in, I can’t get myself to like it. It might be a bit better if I did it more often but that is a big hump to get past.

Krompus, in I'm being harassed by mosquitoes, how do i kill them all?
@Krompus@lemmy.world avatar

I am allied with spiders against mosquitoes and bedbugs. I don’t take down their webs (unless they’re in the way) and they eat hundreds of the fuckers. They’re also fun to watch sometimes.

AlexWIWA,

I wish we could talk to spiders. I’d write an agreement with one that says, as long as it doesn’t crawl on me, it can live in the house. I’ll even build it a little shelf to protect from fan wind.

jballs,
@jballs@sh.itjust.works avatar

I would also include a clause that says I never have to see it ever. It can basically be a roommate that lives in the basement and has their own entrance in the garage.

Boinketh,

We can’t write those agreements, but evolution could do it for us. I know that we kill an insignificant amount of them compared to how many are in the wild, but maybe certain spiders in urban areas could be under enough evolutionary strain to actually get better at staying out of our way.

jballs,
@jballs@sh.itjust.works avatar

Not sure if this is good or bad news for our great (10^6) grandchildren. On the one hand, maybe they’ll see less spiders. On the other hand, urban-camo spiders sounds horrifying.

erogenouswarzone,
@erogenouswarzone@lemmy.ml avatar

I woke up the other night gagging in my sleep. I swallowed spastically, compulsively over and over - something was in there. I coughed and wheezed and choked for what felt like hours before it was gone. But a lump lingered until I finally fell asleep again. I chose to believe it was a common house fly, but it went down large and hard.

The moral is, its not about seeing the spiders, its about having stupid, instinct-only vermin that will crawl into any dark, moist space it finds. Their instinct doesn’t even allow for a concept of what a human is. They only know how to eat and screw and maybe be afraid.

carbotect,

spiders usually avoid humans anyways, so that’s good enough for me. also they don’t fly at high speeds or make buzzing sounds, which turns them into top tier animals, that don’t have spines, in my book

imaqtpie,
@imaqtpie@sh.itjust.works avatar
Krompus,
@Krompus@lemmy.world avatar

I can count on one hand the amount of times I’ve had spiders crawl on me even while living with them, and yeah it still makes me squirm. They usually mind their own business.

AlexWIWA,

Yeah same. My issue is I’m irrationally afraid of the possibility.

HeyThisIsntTheYMCA,
@HeyThisIsntTheYMCA@lemmy.world avatar

We had a “pet” spider that lived in the kitchen. There was this spot the ants kept getting in, and he (? I assume) moved there and just started eating the ants. I hate ants. And so a pact was formed. Then one year my mom hired a cleaning lady and she didn’t bother to ask about Gerald.

AlexWIWA,

Poor Gerald :(

I only remove brown recluse spiders, most other types of household spiders can be trusted.

LaunchesKayaks,

I have so many spiders on my property. My fave is the bold jumper that lives in my living room. He started off by moving in and residing in a box of captain crunch. I let him live there and he left eventually and moved to the living room. Idk what he ate when he lived the cereal box, but he got significantly bigger.

Fester,

What the spiders don’t know is that I’m also allied with the house centipedes. And neither of them know about my treaty with the cats.

8565, in What can a senior desktop support tech do who is burned out?

When I got burnt out I did a hard turn. I now manage a Turkey Farm and just do IT on the side. Most relaxing decision I've ever made

Elegast,
@Elegast@lemmy.ca avatar

Man that’s a jump. My issue is leaving the fairly good pay. But I think it’s going to need to happen soon.

8565,

I left a Factory IT Admin job and honestly after factoring in my free housing only make 1k less a year than I did in IT. but, I left March 2020 and the factory didn't survive COVID. Glad I jumped that ship

Elegast,
@Elegast@lemmy.ca avatar

That’s interesting. How did you come about finding the job? I’ve done IT my whole life and wouldn’t even know what to look for if not IT.

8565,

It's from the community I grew up in (1 mile from my dad's house where I grew up) so it was posted in a community FB page

ablackcatstail,
@ablackcatstail@lemmy.goblackcat.com avatar

That’s pretty cool actually. Wish I were in a position to do something similar but I need my next step to parlay with the base skill set I already have.

8565,

Picking something that doesn't take much prior skill is a very good way out. (Not saying you necessarily should) but, it's very easy. The Farm even provides me with housing and paid me to move so it worked out very well

8565,

If your under 39 and in decent enough shape (and US based) the Space Force is looking for recruits and has plenty of IT jobs available. When I'm ready to get back in to the service that is my plan currently

6jarjar6,
@6jarjar6@lemmy.sdf.org avatar

I thought they were only recruiting from the AF, did they recently open it up more?

8565,

They never were only recruiting from the air force. They were pulling out of the Army as well. But, for at least the last couple years they have been doing public recruiting as well

ablackcatstail,
@ablackcatstail@lemmy.goblackcat.com avatar

LOLOLOLO! I am 46, suffer from bipolar disorder, PTSD, and autism. I cannot even qualify for a security clearance, much less go to Space Force. But that much said, I appreciate you reaching out to me. Thanks.

8565,

Hey just trying to offer options lol.

ablackcatstail,

ablackcatstail,
@ablackcatstail@lemmy.goblackcat.com avatar

Good god hell yeah it is.

yanyuan,

I’m impressed. To me, managing a Turkey Farm sounds like a lot of work and potentially stress. Isn’t it?

8565,

Almost no stress at all. I have like 1 or two deadlines a month (load out and baby bird arrival) we have 40k birds handled between me and a part time farmhand. Everyday is as easy as walking through barns and picking up dead followed by yard work and maintenance. And once a month I run a litter machine through one of 3 finishers to keep the barns clean. Other than that it's just monitoring bird health which after you get used to it is easy. Most important thing is to keep the birds healthy, comfortable and happy

oats,

keeping them healthy, comfortable and happy until their throats are slit 🥰

Users are definitely harder to train than turkeys

8565,

Users are so hard. Turkeys you just have to find any way they may kill themselves and fix it before they do

flop_leash_973,

And it is more discouraged to kill and eat the users when they get out of line.

8565,

And they taste worse. Farmhands are also hard to train maybe worse than users

Shurf116, in What genres of music do Lemmites enjoy?

Mostly it’s different subgenres of rock and metal (like 70% of all comments here. Seriously, I’ve never met so many ppl that listen to my favorite music in one place xD).

I kinda have a few moods. For the “fun and energetic” mood I have hard rock and heavy metal, for the “my job is f*cking me and I don’t like it” I have nu metal and some other things that sound angry, for the “fancy” I have a strange mix of P!atD, Franz Ferdinand, some songs that are creepy/sad but sound happy (“I can’t decide”, “Don’t fear the Reaper”, “To The Sea”) and steampunk/dark cabaret/murder song bands (Voltaire, Coppelius, the Cog is Dead, American Murder Song)

aquarisces, (edited ) in What genres of music do Lemmites enjoy?

My first love is Hip Hop but I love lots of genres Funk, Soul, Jazz, Electronic, House, Techno, Dreampop, Ambient, Balearic, Indie/Alternative - I’m probably missing something 😊. I’ve even setup some communities here on Lemmy for my music genres that I love.

Some of my favourite artists:

  • Mount Kimbie
  • The xx
  • J Dilla
  • Flying Lotus
  • Larry Heard/Mr Fingers
  • The Avalanches
  • Khruangbin
  • Beach House
  • Toro Y Moi
  • Erykah Badu
  • Miles Davis
  • Four Tet
  • Leon Vynehall
  • Jonny Nash

EDIT: Adding City Pop genre as well since I saw another user comment that

2nd EDIT: Oh and Reggae, Dub too!

3rd EDIT: Okay I keep adding artists thinking I can’t believe I left such and such off haha I’ll stop now!

Eccitaze, in What's it like working night shift?
@Eccitaze@yiffit.net avatar

I worked graveyard shifts at a gas station for a year or two. My general experience beyond what other people have said–good commute, fucking with your social life, taking its toll on your body, all that–is that working graveyard shifts is lonely. I cannot understate how lonely it got; there were stretches of multiple hours where there were no customers at all, and it was just me and the long list of nightly chores I had to do (mopping floors, prepping food for breakfast rush, restocking shelves, etc., etc.). Not having any human contact at all fucks with your head something fierce, especially when you mix in sleep deprivation and your body rebelling against the normal sleep rhythm into the mix.

My advise is that if you’re going to be working night shift all alone, get into podcasts. Having a radio that I could use to listen to NPR was the main thing that kept me sane, because I could at least have a human voice to listen to and keep my mind somewhat engaged.

weirdwallace75, in What is a beautiful concept or idea that continues to blow your mind?

Noether's Theorem:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Noether%27s_theorem

https://math.ucr.edu/home/baez/noether.html

Fundamentally, it allows us to logically infer the conservation laws from the laws of motion of a given physical system using relatively simple math. It always applies, no matter if we're talking about massive systems or quantum ones.

pyrrhus,

I think the concept is even more beautiful than you described:

A symmetry in a physical system implies a conservation law.

As a physicist, since the beginning of your studies you learn to appreciate and seek symmetries in various systems. At first, it’s mostly on an intuitive way to help you understand or simplify a problem. But at some point you learn about Noether’s theorem and see the even deeper meaning and power of symmetries.

For example, symmetry in movement in space (meaning I can move my entire system and it stays the same) implies conservation of momentum.

And symmetry in time translation (meaning if move the entire system a through a same interval in time and it still behaves the same way) implies conservation of energy.
