swade2569, in What's a quote that has stuck with you for your whole life?
@swade2569@lemmy.world avatar

It’s better to regret something you have done than something you haven’t.

doug_fir, in What are your favorite leftist podcasts?

“Well there’s your problem”, about engineering disasters - it’s also a YouTube channel but there are podcast feeds and it works as audio (that’s how I listen). Also “Know your enemy” is a leftist look at the right.

Notyou, in What butterfly effect have you personally witnessed?

Back in high school times, my mother made me go to a religious summer camp. I got more religious after that and it came time for me to get a job (I got a job while still in high school at a fast food place). I said I couldn’t work Sundays because of church. The first place said then you can’t work here. I said okay and went to a different fast food place and got a job with Sundays off.

Fast forward to my senior year, I wasn’t really religious anymore and I started training some new girl. We hung out and started dating. Ended up getting married. We went through some troubles where we were living and moved closer to her family.

After we moved, I decided to join the military to help support us. Instead of just being all about drugs. Got some job/career experience out of it and now I’m out of the military but the job skills translated over to my current job.

The thing is I don’t think I ever would have joined to military if I didn’t feel I needed to for my wife. I never would I have met her without working at that fast food place. I never would have worked there unless they gave my Sundays off. I never would have cared to ask for Sundays off, if my mom didn’t force me to go to a religious summer camp. Yeah so probably that.

I fixed this on some communities by unsubscribe and subscribing again (after the instances updated to 0.18.X)

Here are a few off the top of my head (though I looked up the original kanji for some of the Japanese ones)…

To enjoy life’s immensity, you do not need many things.

  • Ryōkan, a Japanese poet

Ain’t no shame in holding onto grief, as long as you make room for other things too.

  • Bubbles, from the last episode of The Wire

Honor is dead, but I’ll see what I can do.

  • Kaladin, from The Stormlight Archive Book 2 by Brandon Sanderson

Beware the difference between intelligibility and correctness.

  • Nassim Nicholas Taleb

Success consists of moving from failure to failure without loss of enthusiasm.

  • Winston Churchill

猿も木から落ちる (Saru mo ki kara ochiru)

Even monkeys fall from trees.

  • Anonymous, traditional Japanese saying

正勝吾勝 (Makatsu agatsu)

True victory is victory over one’s self.

  • Morihei Ueshiba, founder of Aikido
Whitebrow, in What's a quote that has stuck with you for your whole life?

This one is from my previous boss: “you gotta do what’s good for you, and nobody else”

Taught me to prioritize things that are important to me and not to live for the sake of others

Another was “you can’t help people who don’t want to help themselves”

Taught me that some efforts are futile because unwillingness from others will result in deterioration to the status quo unless they’re willing to participate to move things forward

fruitywelsh, in What replacement for each major social media do you use

randoom, in What's a quote that has stuck with you for your whole life?

“Love is the only rational act.”-Morrie Schwartz, Tuesdays with Morrie.

agitatedpotato, in What's a quote that has stuck with you for your whole life?

This thing we tell of can never be found by seeking, yet only seekers find it.

Candelestine, in What's a quote that has stuck with you for your whole life?

For my whole life is a tall order. Probably “what goes around comes around”.

„Old habits die hard“

&

"Anything that can go wrong will (eventually) go wrong."

  • Added the eventually for Murphy’s law because in its original version it kinda implies that everything that can will go wrong right away
samus12345,
@samus12345@lemmy.world avatar

I’ve seen “and at the worst possible time” added to the end of Murphy’s Law. Right away might not be the worst possible time.

DaBai, in Why do Gezendong-style-tankies support Putin and Xi-Xinpin so much ?

This is a ridiculously loaded question.

The use of the dollar as a big stick for military base expansion and funding of forever wars across the world is directly threatened by the creation of a multipolar world. While Russia has amble things that can be criticized for, there is critical support as the defeat of NATO forces combined with the expansion of BRICS and China’s BRI has created space for many countries in the world to cease their dependence on the united states while ending the funding of a military that authoritatively declared itself the world police.

Based on this data I would come to the conclusion that China is doing a good job, not to mention Covid-19 where majority of the western countries subjected large amounts of the population to a disease and continues to make allowances for anti-vaccine misinfo advocates.

Ziggurat,

Don’t get me wrong, I don’t say that US are great or whatever. I say that as a socialist, modern China is pretty far from the kind of society I would like to build, and just like I blame some comrade for falling in the social liberal trap, I blame others for falling in the anything against US is good trap

richteratmosphere, in What's the point of buying new phones every years?
@richteratmosphere@lemmy.sdf.org avatar

I bought an unlocked Pixel 6 near launch on sale and intend to use it until security updates cease (five years from launch).

wheeldawg,

I got the pixel 7 last year since my old pixel 2xl was out of security.

Well that and the battery was terrible and it was sluggish as well in general and a screen crack that didn’t affect functionally, but was annoying af. Still have it around as a spare device to go back to if this one has an issue.

nouben,

Same here, kept a pixel 2 for way too long, i had to charge it 2 times a day if i used it as a smartphone ^^ though i didn’t feel it become sluggish

FarceMultiplier, in How do you enjoy listening to digital content? Speakers? Headphones? Earbuds?
@FarceMultiplier@lemmy.ca avatar

I’m kind of specific.

Unless I purposefully want to hear sound, my devices are muted 100% of the time. If I am listening to something, I wear earbuds with over-ear hooks, so that one of them can sit partially out of my ear, so that my hearing is not completely isolated from the world.

Though…autistic.

Krotz,

That’s why I love my Sony Linkbuds. They are physically open, so I hear my surroundings just fine while listening to music/watching a video.

thisisbutaname, in What genres of music do Lemmites enjoy?

OT, but… How did we get to lemmites and not lemmings?
