Ecology8622, in How do I delete my Reddit account?

IMO, don’t delete your account. I used to regularly run shreddit to “delete” my history. Same with Twitter and Facebook - I keep my accounts there to prevent hijacking.

brewdtype, in Are you replacing Reddit with Lenny?

Yes and no. My daily scrolling habit has been moved to lemmy and I haven’t really felt any loss.

However, and this is a big caveat: Reddit remains a huge source of institutional knowledge. Half a dozen times weekly I’ll look something up and the most relevant answer/discussion will be from Reddit. As I understand it, lemmy will never fulfill this need, because it’s not scraped the same way Reddit is? Or perhaps I’ve misunderstood something about the way federation works. If that’s true, it’s a huge blow to the long-term use of lemmy v. Reddit.

cantstopthesignal,

I wonder if that could be built into it. Reddit was not a very useful place for information in 2011. Then the communities came.

brewdtype,

Right, I may be totally misunderstanding the problem.

If it’s just that lemmy needs time and interaction from the community to build that knowledge, then great! No problem. But what I understood was that lemmy’s communities and conversations simply aren’t made accessible to wide-searching like that.

refurbishedrefurbisher, in How do I delete my Reddit account?

They don’t comply with GDPR. Not sure if it still works, but you can use PowerDeleteSuite to edit and then remove your comments. It’s a good idea to keep your account open for another week or so to make sure Reddit doesn’t restore deleted comments (they did for a few comments on my account), then delete the account in the preferences tab (I used old reddit to do so)

github.com/j0be/PowerDeleteSuite

To avoid rate limiting, there is a 5 second delay between editing and deleting each comment, so expect it to take a very long time.

They don’t comply with GDPR

What happens if you ask them to comply? Has anyone tried?

trachemys,

I hear some had success with it, but then Reddit got overwhelmed and stopped responding to it.

Lemmylefty,
@Lemmylefty@lemmy.world avatar

I have seen that part of that may be due to subreddits going from private to open, so you suddenly have comments again.

Kir, in Where do you go on Lemmy for reliable news and politics?

Unbiased news is impossible. If someone is saying that he’s giving you unbiased and objective news, he’s scamming you.

You are quite literally the only person that actually answered OPs question. Thanks for these!

Ohthereyouare,

Thanks for the list

Some of those are exactly the places I’m talking about. Politics@lemmy.ml is filled with accounts from troll farms. The #4 post there right now is by the worst of the group.

And, if it wasn’t bad enough that post fake and misleading stuff, they brigade the votes and manipulate the posts that way as well. It’s a disaster.

SlicingBot,

So far for me, the only place in the fediverse with news and politics communities that are okay but not great are the ones on beehaw.org.

Everywhere else I’ve checked so far has a very naked agenda. Beehaw still leans left, but not in a way that feels icky.

TheyHaveNoName, in Breakfast suggestions?

Try oat milk - I love serial with that stuff. Simple toast with peanut butter it’s amazing. Granola with soya yogurt is fantastic. But the king of them all is real porridge oats done the proper way with water. Add some maple syrup or honey and you are god to go

ThaijsClan, in Breakfast suggestions?

You can find lactose free alternative milk. One brand is called Lactaid and it tastes exactly the same an normal milk.

PaulBGD,

For the record it is real milk with all the lactose, but with added lactase to process it in your stomach. It still has some of the downsides of having dairy while taking lactase, but it’s pretty solid.

One other option is also the next-gen silk or NotCo’s NotMilk, both a lot more milk like than oat or other nut based milks.

NightOwl, in Where do you go on Lemmy for reliable news and politics?

RSS to get a typical feed that people have become accustomed to. Set up RSS from sources you want to see then see. You get to see more instead of what individuals cherry picked for whatever reason.

pensivepangolin,

This is the best way, for sure. And there are a lot of really great selfhosted projects for doing so!

puppy, in Where do you go on Lemmy for reliable news and politics?

Good luck finding reliable news anywhere, this including the major TV and News organizations.

I think people to the left of Democratic Socialists need to start reading up on anarchy and anarchism. It’s not about lawlessness and disorder but about horizontally focused civilization. It’s about anti-authoritarianism.

fluffman86, in I'm being harassed by mosquitoes, how do i kill them all?

Call an exterminator, preferably a small mom&pop shop and not a big Orkin or Terminex or whatever, and have them come and and do a mosquito treatment. They’ll spray a chemical on the outside of your house, under the leaves of your trees/bushes, etc. Then they’ll spray inside, but just the corners for other bugs. You’ll need to keep your dog out of the chemical inside for about 10-20 minutes, and out of the chemical outside for probably an hour. After that it’s dry and non-toxic to mammals but will get soaked up by insects. Be sure to double check that with the exterminator, times vary depending on the chemical used.

Good treatments should last a solid 2-3 months, which ought to be enough to get you through the worst of mosquito season, unless you’re in Florida or something.

ieatpillowtags,

I’ve heard that those treatments are fairly indiscriminate and will kill most insects, not just mosquitoes. I worry about the effect on the local ecosystem such as birds that would eat them.

I’m going to remove this thread under rule #2. The topic is inherently political and some of the comments are getting rough.

WhoRoger, in How often do you brush your teeth?
@WhoRoger@lemmy.world avatar

I hate it so much. I can’t stand standing in the bathroom in front of a mirror and fiddle with my teeth. That whole experience is just wholy depressing, and then the foul taste on top of that. I try to at least brush and use mouthwash when I wake up and am groggy enough to not mind that much.

aski3252,

I mean I couldn’t do that either, not for very long at least. I have the tendency to walk around aimlessly when doing something like that (same when I’m on the phone), which means I have to clean the floor after. So mostly I either brush my theeth in the shower or I sit down/lie down.

Damn, I just noticed that my theeth brushing habits are probably very weird, bit hey, at least that way I do it 2 - 3 times a day.

BluesBox,
@BluesBox@lemmy.world avatar

As much as I agree, life is a whole lot more depressing if you DON’T take care of your teeth.

Vlyn, in How often do you brush your teeth?
@Vlyn@lemmy.ml avatar

Once in the morning (with a tongue scraper beforehand), once before bed (with flossing and the tongue scraper beforehand).

Seems to work well enough so far. Oh and an electric toothbrush is a must.

Fleppensteijn,
@Fleppensteijn@feddit.nl avatar

Won’t breakfast taste nasty with that toothpaste taste?

Vlyn,
@Vlyn@lemmy.ml avatar

Not really, because I don’t go straight to eating. After getting out of bed I first brush my teeth (or go to the toilet, depends), then I shower. Afterwards I make breakfast. So between brushing my teeth and eating there’s roughly around 20-30 minutes. With a glass of water before taking the first bite there is no taste left.

I’ve thought about brushing before or after breakfast for a while and neither way seems great. Before is great because you lose the bad breath from the night. After is nice too, except you like coffee for breakfast. General rule is always: Don’t immediately brush before or after eating, especially if you eat anything acidic, that fucks your teeth up.
