If this kind of thing becomes widespread, then people will find a way to broadcast fake anti-camera signals as well. Imagine a thief breaks into your house and you want your security cameras to record them… but guess what, the thief broadcasts an anti-camera signal and they all switch off, completely neutralising your security system. “Unintended side-effects”
Finding stuff on Mastodon is more about hashtags. Eventually, by subscribing to #stuff you’re interested in, you will discover accounts worth following. The Tusky app allows you to subscribe to hashtags like to an account. I don’t follow people anymore, I follow topics!
Coming from the Reddit is Fun app, I tried Jerboa first, thought it was fine, then tried Liftoff and it feels a lot better to me so far. But I’m still new to this universe, so I might try other apps and change my mind! Loving the diversity so far at least!
I’m also a RIF refugee. Liftoff is the first app I’ve tried for Lemmy. Overall I’m pretty happy. The updates get better and better. I’m still leaning how to Lemmy, but I really like it so far. One of the few things throwing me off at the moment is that I either can’t or don’t know how to easily tell what posts I’ve already seen. RIF would change the color of the text from white to blue. If they can add that then I’ll have nothing to complain about.
Is this definition of “leftists” widely accepted? I always thought that word was just another word for liberal or anyone who isn’t right wing these days.
But this is not at all how the vast majority of people use the terms. In a time where people can barely communicate as it is, at what point is it harmful to stick to definitions barely anyone still uses in the US?
Though, my Lemmy illiteracy has lead me to make an account per instance. So I have one here, .world and nsfw. Is it possible to go on different instances with the same account?
I tried liftoff a few hours ago and same. Didn’t mind jerboa, but connect just clicked with me… I think because the flow is extremely similar to boost.
I couldn’t shake the same feeling I get when using discord when using liftoff. Just no.
Kbin: I liked the UI but I thought calling communities “magazines” was weird. Also, there were features that I felt unnecessary like “boost” or “microblog”. Self-hosting documentation was much worse compared to Lemmy.
Squabbles: It took me a while to figure out the UI and honestly did not like it. The icon looks very funny as if it’s mocking what the average user is supposed to look like. It also isn’t decentralized.
Tildes: I liked the UI and the name. Not much to say other than that it’s also not decentralized.
Discuit: The best UI out of the bunch. It’s very easy to navigate. I wish it also had a naming community prefix like “!” or “m/” or “s/” or “~”. Generally, it feels very Reddit-like but it’s also not decentralized.
Lemmy: Very rough start but this and Kbin were really the only real options for me because they’re both decentralized. It’s gotten a lot better over the past month in terms of performance and UI. There’s a lot of apps being developed for it too. Most of Lemmy’s annoying quirks are its bugs but those are being fixed after every new release.
Same. I firmly think if Tildes had opened up more, it would have risen fast as a viable reddit alternative. That ship has likely sailed, but it’s aiight cus it’s still got great communities.
They didn’t have any interest in becoming a Reddit alternative, at least not for the vast majority of Reddit content like memes and puppy pictures. I think the entire place is text only, which does tend to foster more thoughtful commentary.
It is a historical event. Jesus was a real person, and there are a lot of sources - outside the bible - about him as a person and his crucifixion.
That’s my entire point. I’d like to know the truth behind the religion. I find it absolutely fascinating how historical events get warped over time to become a religion that billions of people still believe in today.
Sadly there are not a lot of extra-biblical sources on Jesus and his life actually.
There is one, a single one. And it’s pretty bad. Josephus. He basically mentions “James, the brother of Jesus they call Christ”, in the middle of a text not about Jesus at all.
I’m not a historian, but Tacitus definitely mentioned Jesus’ crucifixion. Saying there are a “a lot” of source is an exaggeration, you’re right about that, but there’s basically no doubt that Jesus was a real, historical figure. (I’m not saying that you’re disputing that, I’m just still stuck on the guy actually thinking that Jesus wasn’t real.)
Obviously Christian sources can’t be taken at face value, but there’s enough corroborating evidence - be it archaeological or written - that proves that at least some of the things in the gospels are based on facts, even if it’s certainly embellished and a lot of it likely just made up and/or warped over time.
Users are free to download Threads and go lick zucc’s balls if they so desire, instances are just protecting themselves and the responsability that comes with it.
It’s getting tired reading so many zucc apologist, I swear they are bots or accounts created for that purpose
