Doodleschmit, in Every goddamn time I'm trying to make something for my DnD game
@Doodleschmit@lemmy.world avatar

I’m a little out of the loop on webp. What makes it problematic?

NENathaniel,
@NENathaniel@lemmy.ca avatar

A lot of things don’t support it yet, but it’s technically a better compression format

Potatisen,

Better than JPEGxl?

Knusper,

Nope. JPEG XL is more modern and delivers lower file sizes without fucking up image quality as much. Downside is that, right now, JPEG XL is actually supported by even less things, because it is still so new.

But it is an industry standard rather than just Google trying to push its own thing, so I do expect it to overtake WebP in a few years.

MMNT,

Google dropped support for it in favour of avif, just so they can push their own shit again.

xeekei,

JPEG XL’s name sucks, tho. Nothing’s perfect.

Swedneck,
@Swedneck@discuss.tchncs.de avatar

just call it JXL like a normal person

xeekei,

How are we saying that out loud? “Jexel”?

better compression that's often configured wrong by site admins and the quality is shit-tier.

IamRoot,

Not really.

Ottomateeverything,

This is how every new thing starts though. You don’t just get better standards overnight. Jpg and png didn’t happen overnight either. PNG had this problem for quite a while.

It’s not a problem with WebP. It’s a problem with tooling that aren’t moving forwards to objectively more effective formats.

Kusimulkku,

WebP is in no way new

Ottomateeverything,

It came out in the past 15 years. Most “common” formats like png and jpg came out in the 90s. Others like tif, bmp, and gif are from the 80s.

So yeah, it is “new”, it’s just very relative.

NENathaniel,
@NENathaniel@lemmy.ca avatar

Yea I have nothing against WebP myself. I also wish HEIC was more widely supported

OutlierBlue,

HEIC now has a licensing cost to it, meaning devs have to pay to make their software able to open it. Microsoft recently removed HEIC support from their software because of it.

NENathaniel,
@NENathaniel@lemmy.ca avatar

Oh didn’t know that, that sucks

VelvetStorm,

Where did you get that from?

Pregnenolone,

The term “hot wife” is used in the open sex and polyamory community to mean a female partner who is allowed to have sex with other people.

VelvetStorm, (edited )

Ohhhhh, that’s odd to me. I am in a poly relationship and have been for a few years and haven’t heard that.

Pregnenolone,

To be a bit more specific, it’s related to consensual cuckoldry. Basically men “sharing” their wives

VelvetStorm,

I’m not into watching so thst may be why I’ve never heard of it. My wife is free to date who she wants but she almost never does.

ALostInquirer, (edited )

If they sport a woman bun, wouldn’t that be an even greater problem supposing a straight monogamoship? 😂

snek_boi,

Piecemakers3Dprints, (edited )
@Piecemakers3Dprints@lemmy.world avatar

To be fair, I’d be more concerned with the unkempt excuse for a beard being a sign of other, less visible issues. Sure, the bun is cringe AF, but adult-level hygiene is clutch for ranking as The One. 🤗

edit: ooh, touched a nerve with some? Go wash yourselves.

snek_boi,

What does the word hygiene mean?

Piecemakers3Dprints,
@Piecemakers3Dprints@lemmy.world avatar
snek_boi,

Interesting. Based on the definition “conditions and practices that help to maintain health and prevent the spread of diseases”, I’m guessing that you’re implying a beard categorized as unkempt can lead to disease.

Just because I’m trying to understand, is the issue hair’s length? If so, shampoo and conditioner can be used in larger amounts. The shampoo would pick up the dead skin cells, remove excess grease, and pick up all kinds of germs. The conditioner would reapply grease so that the hair is healthy and strong.

Is the issue the fact that this hair is so close to the mouth that, when eating, it could have sauces or stuff like that falling onto it? If so, shampoo or regular soap can clean it all up for it to be hygienic again.

Am I missing something?

Piecemakers3Dprints,
@Piecemakers3Dprints@lemmy.world avatar

You are correct in these hypotheses, yes, and details to a person’s overall presentation are some of the first introductions one has to said stranger’s tendencies, interests, and even self-worth. Of course, conjecture is not fact, and an educated guess is only as good as the education behind it.

partial_accumen, (edited )

We owe a tremendous debt to Lafayette. We will not forget it.

Kase,

Did you forget Lafayette? Have you an ounce of regret?

HobbitFoot,

After the War of 1812, the UK started to recognize the USA as a local power it had to deal with diplomaticly instead of with war. This gets shown in the negotiation of the 49th parallel and its maintaining of the Monroe Doctrine. Hell, the USA almost declared war against France after the Civil War to liberate Mexico.

Post World War I, the UK seemed to be the better ally. The UK was more willing to let the USA expand into core imperial territories during and after World War II. The USA didn’t have to fight a post British imperial war like it did for France in Vietnam. You also had the UK fall in line in NATO while France didn’t.

France would have been the better natural ally, but things change over time.

Everythingispenguins,

But they speak French… /S

So France was the first ally of the US. Recognizing it as a country before the end the revolutionary war. Though that was mostly to piss the UK off.

They have always kind of been a bit of frienemies. With various different geopolitical slights over the years. I have always thought that a lot has to do with who gets to be the lingua franca and the center of science and learning.

dojan, (edited ) in I've unfortunately made this mistake at Costco of all places.

What’s special about Costco? Speaking as someone who’s never been.

The_Picard_Maneuver,
@The_Picard_Maneuver@startrek.website avatar

Bulk shopping, and the place is like a giant warehouse. I once made the mistake of picking up a few heavy things and hauling them around the store with me until I could check out. It was painful.

blargerer,

As it pertains to this post, they specialize in selling in bulk.

expatriado, (edited )

oh, a straight answer, those are rare

dojan, (edited )
@dojan@lemmy.world avatar

Aah, that’s the context I wanted. Thank you!

They’ve recently tried establishing here in Sweden. Not quite sure where they set up shop but it’s nowhere near where I live, so I’ve not been. Don’t think it’s going great for them. I don’t think bulk groceries is a filled niche here, but I’m also not sure how big that niche even is. As far as I know most people buy groceries for the day, or every couple of days. My roomie and I order in groceries once a week. I think that’s fairly standard.

Might be massive savings in buying in bulk, but then there’s the matter of storing it all too.

afraid_of_zombies,

It’s okay for some things. Like I bake and it’s nice just getting a big sack of flour. If it’s something you are going to use a little of every day and doesn’t spoil go to Costco, but unless I am hosting a party or something the local supermarket is fine.

Pyr_Pressure,

Depends on the items. Things that you don’t typically buy on a weekly basis is the draw, then while You’re there you may as well get your stuff for the week.

We don’t typically go to Costco every week, for us it’s a once a month type trip. Things like dog food, toilet paper, paper towels, meat that you can freeze for later (typically the best quality meat around here), cheese, treats, etc.

Most things that are expensive elsewhere are cheaper there and in a larger size.

uphillbothways, (edited )
@uphillbothways@kbin.social avatar

A lot of Americans don't realize how small European refrigerators are. And, that storage space, in general, is more limited.

Swedneck,
@Swedneck@discuss.tchncs.de avatar

was about to say, the reason bulk sellers don’t really work here is because a lot of people just shop every other day or so, if not straight up every single day.

weekly grocery shopping just sounds absurd to me, so much more effort than just popping by on the way home from work or just living close enough that you can bike there in 5 minutes.

MrStankov,

Yeah, we don’t really have that whole popping by thing here in freedom land. You’re going to the store in your car, might as well fill up the trunk and just go once a week or so.

afraid_of_zombies,

I can do that I just find shopping annoying. Would rather just know it’s a choir I have to do once a week. There is a store I walk to if I run short of something.

Swedneck,
@Swedneck@discuss.tchncs.de avatar

i mean yeah it’s annoying because you’re buying a week’s worth of stuff… when you’re shopping daily you’re buying like 3 things at once and it takes all of 10 minutes.

afraid_of_zombies,

Exact opposite of what I said

peopleproblems,

Then what do you do with the random crap you own?

ABC123itsEASY,

Yea you don’t need to have a family of 10 to make use of Costco. You and your roomies can definitely save some money by pooling and getting some stuff together at Costco. You just learn what you can actually use and what doesn’t make sense for your household and buy the stuff you need less of somewhere else. I highly recommend it; learning to shop at Costco has helped me and my partner eat better, cook more, and spend less money.

dojan,
@dojan@lemmy.world avatar

I don’t think we could as the nearest Costco is 2 hours and 40 minutes away. The reviews aren’t great either, seems they mostly sell expired stuff.

squiblet,
@squiblet@kbin.social avatar

They sell items in larger quantities, like 24 eggs vs 12, or 3 lbs of cheese vs .5 or 1, or 7 lbs of sour cream vs 1, 2-3 lbs of chips vs 10 ounces (if my goofy American units mean anything to you). They also have good prices on other items like kitchen goods, jewelry, electronics, auto services, alcohol and clothing. One thing that distinguishes them is that their house brand, Kirkland Select, is very good for most items. While they tend to only carry 1-2 brand names for most items, they’re very well chosen in my experience.

Karyoplasma,

(if my goofy American units mean anything to you)

I got the idea after reading “24 eggs”. That strongly implies family size.

afraid_of_zombies,

Just imagine a Walmart that you are not hoping no one sees you in.

dojan,
