SeaJ, in EU fossil fuel CO2 emissions hit 60-year low

I wonder how much of that was because energy prices rose because of Russia.

Zworf, (edited )

Came here to say this but you beat me to it. I bet some of it is because people were skimping on heating last winter. Now that the prices are back to normal I think people will heat (and cool) more again. I know I have not watched my heating as scrupulously as last winter (even though I use very little energy 😇)

taanegl, in Norway to pay Sámi reindeer herders millions for violating their human rights

The Sapmi are really taking up the fight here, you guys, not just for them, but for Norwegians as well.

For some context, the windmills in Norway are EXTREMELY disliked. Partly because trusting cost cutting European companies was a mistake (they are proned to error have a tendency to fall apart) and partly because they make the Norwegian landscape look ugly AF.

Fun fact about Norwegians, is that we are suppusedly “national romantics”, in that norwegians supposedly worship the forests , the mountains, the fjords… until the deforestation, wanting to dump coals in the fjords, the fucking cruise liner tourism my fucking GOD the cruise liner tourism…

Suffice to say, our neo-liberal parties are a bunch of toadies. I and many other Norwegians thank the Sapmi for checking the powers that be. But we still gotta protest, we still gotta make sure collective power isn’t trumped by elitism.

Also, the government “gave back” a ton of land to a Baron family, which was acquired by the Norwegian government because all nature belongs to Norwegians. Its now being defrosted as we speak. See how neo-liberalism is also fucking up Norway?

Critical_Insight, (edited )

The thing with our current hypersonic missiles is that they’re only hypersonic during the transit. They don’t hit the target at hypersonic speeds. Traveling at those speeds creates plasma around the missile which prevents communication with airplanes, satellites or ground based radars. You also have to be high up in the atmosphere where air is thin or otherwise your missile is going to turn into a fireball way before it reaches the target. This is what also prevents you from attaching a seeker into the front of the missile; that would melt aswell.

This is why Ukraine has shot down Russian “hypersonic missiles” with the US patriot system even though that should be impossible. It is impossible while the missile is still hypersonic but that’s not when you intercept it. You wait for it to get closer and slow down first. That’s why Kinzhal doesn’t really count as a hypersonic weapon or if it does then so does the German V-2 from the 40’s.

jarfil, (edited )

I don’t get the claim about it being “impossible” to shoot it down while hypersonic, either.

So maybe it’s high enough that you don’t have any interceptor missile capable of reaching that altitude… but if you had one, that hypersonic ball of plasma is not “hyperluminic”, all that radio noise is going to light up on any radar like a beacon. Sounds like it should be easy to predict its trajectory, particularly knowing that it can’t maneuver much at hypersonic speeds, so it should be even easier to plot an intercept course.

It may by impossible to shoot it down from behind, or from a plane right underneath that doesn’t have hypersonic interceptor missiles, but from any position in front of the enemy missile… you could float a balloon onto its path, and hit it.

Also, there is lasers. They may not be great as an offensive weapon, or too easy to mount onto a plane, and need several seconds to burn an incoming missile to a crisp… but they do work at the speed of light, can’t beat that.

Those photos are so harrowing 🙄 Meanwhile, the Guantanamo Bay detention camp and other American black sites are still open, and an actual genocide is happening in Palestine with American material & political support.

The Uyghur genocide has already been debunked several times over, but go on Guardian.

Of course, the CIA does lie professionally, and isn’t exactly known for being anti-genocide.

There’s a lot that needs sorted, and Duda is going to try to fuck things up as much as possible.

DroneRights, in Israel is losing the war against Hamas – but Netanyahu and his government will never admit it

Israel and Hamas aren’t at war, they’re on the same side.

janabuggs,

Care to elaborate?

DroneRights,

Every politician and military leader worth their salt knows that oppression creates terrorism. The way Israel has been treating Palestine made Hamas inevitable, and everyone making decisions in Israel had to have known it. So why intentionally create terrorists? Because theoretically, the existence of terrorists justifies violence. Hamas was created by Israel with the intention of accelerating the genocide under a sympathetic justification.

Hamas is a Frankenstein’s monster. A creation, deliberately made, which grew out of its creator’s control. Hamas’ cause is more sympathetic than Israel bargained for, because at the end of the day all that rage and violence is motivated by a desire not to be oppressed. And just like in the original Frankenstein, all the creator needs to defeat the monster is a little bit of love. If Israel passed laws guaranteeing the equality of Palestinian citizens, Hamas would have no new recruits and no international support. Its legitimacy and power would evaporate in a day. Israel continues the “war” because it believes it can still control the monster. That it can still use Hamas to justify further violence.

sonori,
@sonori@beehaw.org avatar

Yep, there was a reason why until 2019 i believe Israel publicly funded the Hamas with the intent to weaken the formation of a Palestinian government. Israel’s far right needs someone they can try and look strong against so people stop looking inword ar what thier government is actually doing.
