senseamidmadness, in What do we know about forced labour in Xinjiang?

Nothing firm or substantial, according to the article.

leetnewb, in Chinese firm Hikvision linked to repression of Uyghurs aids Israeli surveillance in West Bank, Amnesty International says

Generically, security cameras are computers in a box that have a good camera, a surprising amount of processing power to deal with the video stream, and an evolving level of ability to do inference. Hikvision is/was effectively the leading networked security/surveillance camera manufacturer on the planet for the combination of price and quality, but it seems odd to blame the company for what is a sort of generic tool at this point - maybe a bad analogy, but it would be like blaming Google for Android devices being everywhere.

senseamidmadness,

But, see, China bad.

– US Government Propaganda

Kwakigra,

Android devices are also surveillance tools which can be abused by intelligence agencies or intrusive governments. It’s actually very difficult to find an international company which is not responsible for facilitating atrocities for their own benefit. I know corporations are amoral rather than immoral because they care only about maximizing profit and stockholder value, but the major harms and recklessness with innocent and powerless people is pretty fucked up whether that was the intention or considered an unimportant consequence in the pursuit of greater and greater wealth.

iHUNTcriminals, in Iceland is bracing for a potential volcanic eruption. What is likely to happen and what are the risks?

I don’t know about you but I want to get on my bmx and launch over that crack!

This is that psycho who wants to make tents illegal.

Crotaro, in German journalists detained by Israeli soldiers: 'Asked if we were Jewish at gunpoint'

Ugh, I used to highly defend Israel like a decade ago. And I thiiink back then the IDF was much less hostile in their actions plus “Pallywood” was much more prominent. Now it seems that many Israelis have become radicalised and the stuff that was faked by Hamas and other terror organisations has just become actual truth.

    What?

    iHUNTcriminals, (edited ) in Doctor at a Gaza hospital pleads for help: "We had to perform a premature delivery from a mother’s womb while she was dying.” --- [video, 2 min]

    This is God’s world!

    All hail the devil for peace; for lucifer knew this is what he was working against. People are killing for false Gods. And then they turned “heaven” against him for being the voice of honest reason.

    They built their death armies to fight for the insecurity of men. The men and woman that truly had no faith in the universal “God”. So their fear led to murder, war, and a controlled enslavement. Forever driving true peace, honorable, and honest living out of attainability. If they couldn’t know and find their faith in the one universal “God” of nature and cosmos, then none would be free for the rest of eternity.

    …Or something I just made that up but it seems true.

    cupcakezealot, in Don’t fall into the trap of ‘picking sides’ over Gaza: Hamas’s attacks were unconscionable, razing Gaza to the ground would be abhorrent. In both cases, basic humanity is at stake --- [Opinion]
    @cupcakezealot@lemmy.blahaj.zone avatar

    israeli government and hamas both want never-ending war anyways. i never understood how anyone could think hamas is one valid side in this.

    the goal should always be complete non-violence.

    sqgl, in Dozens of cancer patients could die as Gaza’s main cancer treatment hospital forced to stop most activities over fuel shortage, UN says

    Hamas is maintaining a stockpile of more than 200,000 gallons of fuel for the rockets it fires into Israel and the generators that provide clean air and electricity to its network of underground tunnels, according to U.S. officials, current and former Israeli officials and academics.

    nbcnews.com/…/hamas-hoarding-vast-amounts-fuel-ga…

    Israel released photos of Hamas fuel stores however I don’t understand how they can know if there is anything in them.

    Maybe night time infrared imagery indicates that full ones retain heat? (And maybe water would retain it differently?). But even if we presume that is possible, why don’t IDF just bomb them if they are so sure it is Hamas fuel?

    Abrahamic religions always lead to genocide. It’s built into the very fabric of the religious traditions, the entire reason they existed to begin with was to justify the genocide of other tribes.

    livus, in Germany’s president apologises for killings in Tanzania under colonial rule
    @livus@kbin.social avatar

    This is a good first step, even though it was prompted by Tanzania threatening legal action.

    Perhaps now we will see more human remains repatriated to Tanzania.

    Note, Germany apologized for its genocides against the Herero and Nama a couple of years ago. However it is yet to pay reparations or sign tbe agreement it proposed back then.

    Hirom, in Top Trump allies facing charges lose lawyers after failing to pay legal bills

    Posting this on c/usnews should be enough.

    sqgl,

    Sorry, am new. I saw this other relatively trivial Trump post approved here so I thought it was OK.

    I won’t leave it to the mods. Will police myself in future.

    Hirom,

    Mods appears to be flexible with rule and take gentler approach when it’s not abuse. That’s a good approach.

    The line can be blurry between US News that’s relevant at the local/national level and fit better within c/usnews, and relevant globally and may fit better in c/worldnews readers. Here I’d argue it’s the former.

    sqgl,

    I put it in both this time. There is so little content on Lemmy. Still early days. Why c/ prefix? c for community? (vs r for Reddit)

    Bravefart, in A hurricane gutted a city of one million, leaving no food or water and the dead to rot.

    Tragedy that should be in the news everywhere… And the article links to pics or vids are twit links.

    LootGoblin42, in Gaza: 3,195 children killed in three weeks surpasses annual number of children killed in conflict zones since 2019, Save the Children International says

    Never trust the numbers given by the terrorist organization Hamas. They lie to get sympathy.

    sqgl,

    News agencies going with the clickbait again just like when they passed on the Hamas false claim that 500 were killed in a hospital supposedly bombed by IDF.

    Most newspapers have retracted that reporting but there are no repercussions for them lying so they still jump at any chance for those sweet outrage clicks (as if the war isn’t bad enough).

    iHUNTcriminals, in Nations overwhelmingly vote for humanitarian truce at the UN, as Gazans say they have been ‘left in the dark’

    This is humanity. We are animals and nothing special.

    chaorace,
    @chaorace@lemmy.sdf.org avatar

    Wow

    liv,

    We are “social animals” though. It’s normal for the social animals to attempt to regulate what each other does and how they treat others in the group.

    You see this in apes, elephants, whales, etc.
