9point6,

Opera is basically spyware now, such a shame

9point6, (edited )

First I’ve heard of these so I looked into it

It’s basically a continuation of VIA’s x86 tech (they sold the cyrix processors for a while if anyone remembers them). I assumed it was just copyright theft, but these are legitimately licensed x86 chips.

Apparently the current generation of these is like the Ryzen 3000 series, but I can’t find any actual benchmarks, so I’ll take that with a bit of salt. I doubt they will have the same power efficiency as the OP ones since the clock is apparently at 3.7GHz.

This is much cooler than I initially realised though. A viable 3rd player can keep competitor prices down so we would all benefit even if most of us aren’t buying these chips

9point6,

I thought the Chinese AMD chips were called Hygon or something like that?

In fact a quick google suggests these are two different CPU lines, but I might be getting it wrong

9point6,

Yep it does, most VPN software lets you configure the DNS server to be your pihole.

If you care about the privacy of your DNS requests, tunnel the pihole through a VPN too

9point6,

It makes me sad that I just assumed someone had asked an AI to make a photo realistic version of this meme

9point6,

Absolute value: if less than zero multiply by -1

Is Odd: if modulo 2 is 1

At most both of those are a 3-4 (x86) CPU instructions. There’s no way any regex engine is going to be remotely equivalent if we’re talking about efficiency.

I always had a suspicion you perl guys were crazy

9point6,

Firstly, thank you so much for providing the means for me to cut Reddit out of my life, I feel like I’m engaging with content in a much more deliberate way since, and honestly it’s been a massive improvement to my mental health in a way that I was completely oblivious to there even being a problem before.

Anyway, the question—regarding things happening entirely out of your control, what would be the best and worst things that could happen to lemmy from your perspectives? And as an extension, what are your goals for it?

9point6, (edited )

It’s not even that niche imo, but just more music production content in general. There was an instance focused on this a few months ago, but it seems to have gone and not returned.

On Reddit, you have communities of music makers around theory, various genres, various software, synths, and deals. It’s definitely a source of inspiration I miss.

9point6,

Is red hat a good or a bad influence on the ecosystem?

9point6,

Like why bother at that point? No one is going to eat that egg and be glad the hotel gave it to them. It’s just going to be a bad experience just before they leave, and potentially put them off choosing the hotel again.

9point6,

There’s 4 "and"s in that sentence. For some reason I expected better sentence structure from a librarian.

9point6,

Wait, does it not stand for “behind the scenes” wrt the K-pop group?

9point6,

S-video was a mini DIN connector which wouldn’t have fit into one of these RCA jacks.

If you’d put composite video (the yellow RCA cable in this setup) into one of the audio jacks, pretty much all TVs would not do anything with it as an incompatible signal. If they actually tried to turn it into something, it wouldn’t be audible. Composite video generates a signal at something like 5-10Mhz, human hearing tops out around 20Khz (250-500x lower)

9point6,

Europeans: is this something I’m too SCART to understand?

9point6, (edited )

Anything during the 90s to early 00s sold in Europe came with a SCART connector as the main AV connector. If it wasn’t a direct-from-the-unit SCART cable, there would have been an adapter block to turn the RCA into SCART.

It wasn’t uncommon for cheap TVs to only have RF and SCART.

Also “is this something I’m too X to understand” is a meme format, I’m aware of other connectors.

9point6,

I love everything about this

And now I want a Berlin kebab

9point6,

I mean the latest crop of phones aren’t that far off, we’ve got fingerprint sensors behind screens already and the front facing camera on my Pixel 7 is a pinhole at the top of the screen less than a centimetre across—which IMO just blends in.

9point6,

Wait iPhones have SD slots? I literally had no idea

9point6,

Ah I misunderstood, I guess I assumed the OP was talking about phones.

Glad they finally put the SD reader back on the MacBook Pro a couple of years ago, I was wondering if I’d missed them adding it to their phones.

9point6,

I’d welcome the EU meddling in my freedom; certainly would be better than the Tories

9point6,

I never thought it would happen, but it’s finally happened
