The saiyan viewpoint, just wait until the weights come off!

It solves the problem but you get several megabytes of output, better pipe that into a file and do some filtering and finish with sort -u

Sounds right, if it’s made for small docker images busybox is the right way.

I just don’t like scripting with ash and busybox, it’s a very limited shell.

Pro tip: Use /var/lib/flatpak instead of /dev/null for a neater result, you avoid having to clean up spilled bits.

I use linux for the same reason I wear fuzzy socks and sweaters

My understanding of the history of fashion is that back in the 1950s America it was expected that you wore a suit/dress at work unless you had a different uniform. There were a bunch of very boring people who thought that we should be wearing office job garb all the time, because they wore suits so much it was their default...

Great, let the Streisand effect bite Google in the bum.

The (libre) office suite is geared towards business and school stuff, they are far from perfect but does 90% of what people need.

Word/LibreOffice Writer

Have their uses, just keep the document below like 50 pages.
LaTeX is great for academic papers and when you need the document to look crisp!
And you are right about Markdown it’s great for many documents.

Excel/Calc

Spreadsheets are great for data entry and some calculations especially financial stuff. You can’t do that as easily inside a source file.

PowerPoint, you are probably right about beamer?

Access

Utter garbage “database” maybe if you need something to keep your record collection? If you know the basics of relational databases and a bit of SQL any proper DB is soo much better.

Good you did a thorough test, what distro did you end up choosing?

BeigeAgenda,
@BeigeAgenda@lemmy.ca avatar

Well there’s always Arch 😁

I’m sure Arch and Manjaro are worth a try, back in the day I tried RedHat/SuSE/Slackware/Debian/Ubuntu and ended up with Mint Cinnamon.

The closest to Arch I tried was using Debian Sid, but got annoyed when I one time had to battle with getting it up and running after a dist upgrade. I really hope Arch handles those upgrades better.

The most annoying with that upgrade was that the UI changed to an early version of Gnome Shell, I think that prompted me to switch to Mint MATE

Sounds very theoretical, my experience working on some 40 year old software full of business logic, where customer A got some feature but customer B needs it to work slightly different. Aka something approaching spaghetti.

Regarding old comments I have several times used ~15 year old comments by the original author, close to the actual code to piece together the use of that code, and if I can add my fix there.

In this setting You write comments for yourself, when you in two years need to fix a bug in the new code caused by your old code. And for the next developer that will look at your code decades after you left the company.

Sometimes you, against good practice, comment out a section, with a note why, because you know this will have to be re-enabled in a few months.

The Panalysts are worth the watch, the successor to Feed dump but as a panel show, and this time everything is made up so you don’t have to feel bad for Florida Man, and nobody smuggles anything in their pants.

After LRR started streaming, you have to choose your favorite shows because watching everything is a full time job.

Nowadays it’s easy when you open vim inside gnome terminal, in my old offline noob days it was like “oh shit my terminal is locked” and the way out was either Alt+F2 and then try again or Ctrl+Z; pkill %1.

I never caught the vim bug and started with using joe and switched to nano later, I played with Emacs for some time but ended up using a GUI editor instead.

I was thinking something with why not use AI, but I am sure LLM does not understand math as good as Wolfram alpha.
