I think I found that Petroff article if anyone is interested: doi.org/10.48550/arXiv.1504.02165

bionicjoey,

Reveal it on a sign in the room or by revealing a blackboard with it written then

bionicjoey,

That sounds like a pretty shitty way of implementing a progression system, but I suppose Minecraft mods aren’t known for their great game design.

bionicjoey,

Gary Larson is like Rumpelstiltskin, because he can spin hay into comedy gold

bionicjoey,

I agree that it matters what it goes on, but the correct answer is mustard regardless.

What's a proper response to another dog attempting to mount your dog multiple times and the owner really not doing anything about it?

The owner kind of makes a weak attempt to seem like they’re trying, but if I weren’t there, they wouldn’t intervene at all. I’m asking because I want to make sure that I don’t over react next time.

bionicjoey,

Either that or talk to other owners at the park about collectively shunning the problematic owner. It sounds harsh but I’ve seen this work and it’s preferable to giving up a beloved community hangout just because of one asshole.

bionicjoey,

Let’s not pretend that the customers are being “helped” here. They are getting a thing they crave, but that doesn’t mean they are personally benefiting

I’ve been called a tanky, neolib, fascist, radfem, misogynist, racist, “woke”, republican, Democrat, religious nutjob, and militant athiest over my time on Reddit and I wouldn’t really agree with any of those descriptors lol. People just assume that if you have an even remotely nuanced opinion on a topic then you must belong to the “other side”. I don’t really care most of the time. I know what I believe and I don’t let it be defined by tribalism.

It's funny how google pretends the music on YouTube isn't straight up piracy and everyone just goes along with it

Most people have extremely weird ideas of what’s considered piracy and what isn’t. Downloading a video game rom is piracy, but if you pay money to some Chinese retailer for an SD card containing the roms, that’s somehow not piracy. Exploiting the free trial on a streaming site by using prepaid visa cards is somehow not...

bionicjoey,

Tbf Walt Disney himself invented the sound of a dick slapping an ankle

bionicjoey,

One of my favourite lines in all of DS9 is when Rom and Quark are arguing about where they’ve crash landed.

Quark says something like, “maybe we’ve died and gone to [ferengi heaven]”.

Rom then says “or maybe we’ve gone to [Ferengi Hell]?”

Quark responds (and Armin absolutely crushed this line IMO): “The bar was turning a profit!”

bionicjoey,

Somehow worse than Kai Winn and Gul Dukat put together

Is there a Spotify alternative that has no ads?

I pay for Spotify for 7 years or so now and i'm so sick of all the ads. After every update there seems to be an: oops, sorry, you have ads now. Podcasts are filled with ads. I was just listening to a podcast where they shoved in 3 ads mid-sentence. How long until musicians put ads in their songs. I'm just so sick of it.

Boy do I have some bad news for you

bionicjoey,

Shoutout to project Gutenberg as well. It’s a massive free archive of books that are in the public domain.

What about “dads are protective of their daughters”?

Edit: better yet, “parents are protective of their children”

bionicjoey,

“It’s a chain I beat you with until you understand who’s in ruttin’ command here”

Louis Rossman/FUTO's YouTube app, GrayJay, now supports Sponsorblock... and shames you if you use it

Seriously this was very surprising. I’ve been experimenting with GrayJay since it was announced and I largely think it’s a pretty sweet app. I know there are concerns over how it isn’t “true open source” but it’s a hell of a lot more open than ReVanced. Plus, I like the general design and philosophy of the app....

bionicjoey,

It’s not a big deal, just something I thought was odd. I’m not gonna claim checking a box is ruining my life or anything.

bionicjoey,

“Bustin’ makes me feel good”

-Dr. Beverly Crusher

bionicjoey,

Isn’t this a joke from Diary of a Wimpy Kid?

bionicjoey,

This is relatable. In my experience, the only way to prevent is to make it literally impossible to leave for the place without bonking into the thing. Like don’t put the thing next to the door, put it in front of the door.

bionicjoey,

That’s certainly a possibility, but if someone told me they were put on a PIP, and asked me what they should expect, I’d tell them that in all likelihood it means that they are going to be let go in the near future.

It’s a different story if the company does regular performance management with all employees. For example I work in the public sector and we do annual performance reviews, but also annual performance agreements, which are basically PIPs but without the prerequisite that performance has diminished.

bionicjoey,

I personally never browsed TIHI. It was always one of those where linking it was more of a meme than actually browsing it in my mind. Similar to how a lot of people would comment “/r/unexpectedjohnmulaney” but very few people were actually subbed to /r/unexpectedjohnmulaney. Because who the heck wants a bunch of pictures of comments referencing John Mulaney jokes in their feed? It’s the old “subreddits as hashtags” bit.

All that being said, it sucks because I know TIHI actually had more of a community than most “hashtaggy” subreddits. My understanding is it was a bit like a blend of ATBGE, MildlyInfuriating, CursedImages, or DIWhy.

Reddit is killing real communities, and killing their own history in the process. All those comments throughout the ages linking “/r/TIHI” now link to a dead sub. As much as I may have found those comments annoying, there were people out there who would click that link and go browse or maybe even subscribe to TIHI as a result of those comments.
