So... add new article is to make new threads. And create magazine is... a new sub?
Anyway, it will take a while to get used to all these things. Thanks for existing, still.
EDIT: Don't want to make another microblog, so an edit is it. Sometimes when I'm upvoting a comment, it will give me an error. It's not just once, but repeatedly. Anyone know why?

New software is new, sadly. Growing pains over the last 2 weeks has been leading to random bugs and glitches. Should be resolved as they upgrade things, change coding, etc etc.
Hi, can you help me with a math problem kbin? It's algebra, and it's been a long time since I've had to do it. Can you explain to me how simplifying the terms comes out to 9/2 in the pictured equation please?
Hey, I can take a swing at this. It’s basically just a question of understanding how fractions work (which is fumbled horrendously by teachers, at least where I’m from - I basically had to teach myself fractions all over again when I went back to school).
So, if you look at the terms on the left hand side, we have “x”, which is the same as saying “1x”, so the whole number “1”, we have a whole number “3” as part of “3x”, and we have the fraction that’s going to cause us to do a little work, “1/2” as part of “1/2x”.
Now, a whole number can be rewritten as a fraction, and this makes the most sense when you see fractions as little division problems unto themselves. For instance, the “1/2” could be read as “1 divided by 2”, or “0.5”. A whole number like “1”, then, could be rewritten as “1/1”, or “2/2”, or “3/3”, and so on.
Now, in order to add fractions together (which is what we’re trying to do since our ultimate goal is to get the variable that we’re solving for alone on one side of the equation), we need the denominator to be the same for all of our terms, i.e. the “common denominator”. Because we already know the denominator we likely need, the “2” in “1/2”, we simply need to transform both of our whole numbers into fractions with 2 in the denominator.
For “1”, this can be rewritten as “2/2”. Dividing 2 by 2 gets us back to 1, so that works out.
For “3”, we need to determine what number divided by 2 gets us to 3. In this case, that’s 6, which leaves us with “6/2”.
The equation now looks like this: 2/2x + 6/2x + 1/2x = 45
We can, of course, pull the “x” out like this: x(2/2 + 6/2 + 1/2) = 45
Then, when adding fractions, we only add the numerators (the reason we were looking for the common denominator in the first place). So, 2 + 6 + 1 = 9, leaving us with “9/2x = 45”. It’s then just a question, as you can see in the posted solution, of multiplying both sides by the reciprocal to solve for x.
@nyarlathotep thank you so much! There's other comments to read below, but this is the first one that has triggered my memory for common denominators. You've explained it brilliantly!
Edit: can you explain how the reciprocal works and comes out to 2/9? Been a long time since high school
So I created a magazine (which is similar to a subreddit, correct?) - what now? How do I even find my own? They don't show anywhere in my profile nor do I see any moderator tools, etc.
@acunasdaddy you can find magazines by searching from https://kbin.social/magazines. The Articles posted to the magazines you subscribe to show up in your feed. Microblogs are just aggregate content from the Fediverse. The moderation tools are limited, but what exists can be found by clicking the Magazine Panel button.
All of Kbin is very much a work in progress. A lot of things work as expected. Some don't. Be patient and pay it forward by helping others figure this out when you can.
I'm not familiar with Kbin much but just had a look at your profile from a not-logged-in person's pov. In the right hand sidebar are some stats about you including one that just says "moderated" with a 3 next to it. The 3 is a clickable link that seems to take me to a list of your created magazines.
Not sure if there's a simpler way to get to it when you're actually logged into Kbin though.
@DeadwingSoda Weird, if I open kbin.social in Safari, I have the back button, but if I share the site to my home screen, when I launch from the icon, there’s no bottom buttons. 🤔
I don't know about crucial, and I'm not sure if it exists already and I just can't find it, but I'd love to be able to preview a comment or post before submitting it.
Something similar to the multireddit function that reddit has where you can use a + sign in the URL to consolidate multiple subreddits in one page? I don't know how easy this would be but if you could do that across multiple instances you could have askkbin+asklemmy@lemmy.ml+asklemmy@lemmy.world (etc) and view all the different questions at once.
As a Kbin user, whenever I click on a lemmy link it takes me to their website which would then not allow me to post or subscribe to the magazine/community/whatever. Is there a way to click on other instances' links and STAY in kbin so that I can interact with them?
@ramboteng Nope. thats the whole thing about the fediverse is to be able to communicate with anyone with whatever account. each instance has its own tools and homepage for that instance. if you go to another instance you will see there interface, you can comment, reply, create a post and that's about it. or you can just create an account on whatever instnace and have everything you want. I have one on lemmy and kbin but use kbin more because i like the interface more then lemmy!
Journey. Short enough to complete in a sitting. Original creature designs and beyond gorgeous music. Yes enemies but also yes immortality, which sounds strange but turned out to be balanced enough that it's neither too boring nor too stressful.
No dialogue. No explanation except for whatever hieroglyphs you stumble across out in the middle of the desert, all of which are things a player could easily miss if they're not focused on exploring. Still sobbed three separate times. Everyone I've persuaded to give it a try has agreed with me, including the person that initially made fun of me. That one apologized.
@ike according to ernest it stems from /sbin. though one of the early instances was named karabin based on the karabine gun and thus shortened to kbin (or rather expanded from kbin).
What are some tips for dealing with solicitors (door-to-door salespeople)? Our neighborhood gets a lot of them.
We have a “No solicitors” sign hanging on the front door. Nevertheless, they knock, ring the doorbell, or worse, yell through the front window when it is open, trying to get our attention.
We have a Ring video doorbell and have enabled the automatic “Sorry, we’re not interested” announcement after 15 seconds. These pushy SOBs ignore the sign and the announcement.
When I ultimately find out they are soliciting and I ask why they ignored both the sign and the doorbell announcement, they usually say something like, “I’m not selling anything. I am just working with some people in the neighborhood…” or some such BS.
My wife and I work from home and have had to explain the window shouting to coworkers in meetings. We also have two small children who could be trying to nap at any given time. We have good reasons to not want to be disturbed at home and these assholes disregard that wish.
I will write a negative review online if I find out their name and company they are representing. Any other ways to get these people to leave us alone?
Why is my phone screen's orientation failing to stay locked and how do I fix it?
I have a Samsung Galaxy A71 5G. This usually only happens a few times a week, but my phone seems to be very confused by kbin. I have to hold it vertically or it will switch to landscape orientation every single time. It's annoying. Any ideas?
@HotDogFingies on kbin specifically (if you're using the progressive web app PWA) it currently bypasses your phones landscape or portrait lock. Even on my phone with Android 13, if I've switched off auto rotation and rotate the site it still rotates
That's apparently a bug that's going to be fixed at some point.
Adding /d/domain-name-goes-here to kbin's normal web address will take you to that instance's "homepage" and you can block it there. For example, https://kbin.social/d/feddit.de
Keep in mind, this will only block posts coming from that instance, so you'll still be seeing comments from those users elsewhere, but it should take care of a good deal of it on your feed if you don't mind losing out on the three or four communities there that aren't in german
Thanks for the help! I know how to block an instant but I'm looking to block every instance in the same top level domain, so anything ending in ".de" so that I don't have to manually block several instances. If it's not possible yet that's fair, I know Ernest has a shit ton on his plate.
Poor kid earned one, worthy or not, as a Father’s Day gift to his dad. Ultimate irony. Only person on board for whom I could have shed a tear actually…
