That seems to be what basically every person is doing lately. They act like there is no difference between Lemmy and Reddit. Sure, signing up is easy. But understanding subscriptions is a different situation entirely.
I suspect in the next 6 months or so Lemmy is going to see a bunch of UI improvements as more open source devs learn about the project. It’s similar to the UI of Reddit 7-8 years ago, but I’m in the minority of remembering what Reddit was before it became https://old.
It feels unrealistic to expect a small platform that blew up, not ready to scale to be as polished as something built by a large paid organization right of the bat.
I think some of the problem too is not realizing that... it's kind of broken in a lot of ways and a lot of the times it's not super apparent why.
There's a lot of things that work in one instance and just don't in another, and I think the user frequently thinks it's because they're doing something wrong when in reality, whatever you're trying to do just isn't working right now.
I don’t see the decline refund page. But I changed my apple id into another mail address. I’ve contacted him since there’s no way I can decline now. Hopefully it can get stopped. But it took me some time to realize that i changed my apple id 😅
Declined the refund and picked up some shirts and pins from his merch store. $250k is a lot of income to lose out on, so hopefully any bit helps! Christian deserved it for all the work he’s put into Apollo the last decade. At least his legacy can live on through the influence he’s obviously had over the design of the Lemmy iOS apps.
Thanks for the heads up about the merch store! Sadly most of the pins were out of stock but I picked one of the remaining ones up. I wasn't an Apollo user, I used reddit is fun, but this seems like an appropriate memento to have, and I'm glad to support Christian.
I updated the Apollo app last night. Not only will I decline the refund, I also gave a $10 tip too. If you have a bit of spare cash I would suggest as many of you that can, do the same to show our appreciation, and it may help to cover costs for those that still accept the refund option.
I was considering staying on reddit for awhile but it's become more and more clear that reddit don't want us, so I'm going to migrate over here and to the other platforms. It really sucks what reddit is doing and they are just hurting themselves in the long run. I doubt reddit will just die out but I'm not going to sit back and watch one of my favorite places om the internet become even more autocratic.
Damn, what a great guy. He doesn't just make it easy to request a refund that he needs to pay from his own pocket. He actually made it opt-out. I've always used RiF on Android, never used Apollo. But Christian earned a lot of my respect in the last few weeks. Fuck Reddit and fuck how they screwed the people that helped them build the platform into what it is today.
The way they've handled this whole situation heavily suggests they don't want a fair share of the revenue from third-party apps, they want those apps to die. Especially considering how aggressively the official app is pushed on the mobile site, which is now borderline useless. I'm guessing it slurps up a lot of sensitive, monetisable data that third-party alternatives don't send them.
I had reddit premium before, and I'd have picked it back up in a second if it had been the cost to keep using RiF. Shame that they never intended to allow 3rd party apps to keep going. They're going to hold Narwhal up as an example that they're working with 3rd parties while doing nothing of the sort in any real terms. They'll likely turn the screws so hard on the Narwhal dev after the heat cools that Narwhal dev is going to wish they had just bailed before Reddit bent them over the barrel.
Baconreader was my app of choice for Reddit. I preferred the simplicity, cutting out things I really didn't care about. Sad to see what Reddit has done to the community.
Unlike Reddit, you can see who "reduces" (downvotes) comments and threads. In a comment click on more -> activity -> reduces. Yes, it is all the same person.
