I can feel the emotion in that post. It's so sad. All that time and effort.

pampoon, in Christian is releasing the final update for Apollo, allowing users to opt out of the refunds
@pampoon@lemmy.world avatar

Declined the refund and picked up some shirts and pins from his merch store. $250k is a lot of income to lose out on, so hopefully any bit helps! Christian deserved it for all the work he’s put into Apollo the last decade. At least his legacy can live on through the influence he’s obviously had over the design of the Lemmy iOS apps.

RheingoldRiver,

Thanks for the heads up about the merch store! Sadly most of the pins were out of stock but I picked one of the remaining ones up. I wasn't an Apollo user, I used reddit is fun, but this seems like an appropriate memento to have, and I'm glad to support Christian.

machie27, in Christian is releasing the final update for Apollo, allowing users to opt out of the refunds

I don’t see the decline refund page. But I changed my apple id into another mail address. I’ve contacted him since there’s no way I can decline now. Hopefully it can get stopped. But it took me some time to realize that i changed my apple id 😅

Or just tip him the amount of the refund.

livus, in I don’t understand people who say they can’t figure out Lemmy or KBin
@livus@kbin.social avatar

In terms of people who didn't fully understand the fediverse, there are two kinds of people:

  • those who want to fully get their head around it first so they can make optimal decisions
  • those who are happy to just jump in and learn by doing

the people who are like "but what linux distro will be perfect for all my needs???"

WhiteTiger,
@WhiteTiger@kbin.social avatar

I mean, there's a reason that Linux is used by less than 3% of the market, and the same will likely be true here. The fediverse is not the answer for over 97% of people, and that's a problem.

GoBills, in I don’t understand people who say they can’t figure out Lemmy or KBin

This is my first post...if my dumb old ass can figure it out, anybody probably can.

L1C4U5E, in The Apollo inspired wefwef.app is the best Lemmy app/webapp right now, and its not even close.
@L1C4U5E@lemmy.world avatar

I’d argue Memmy is pretty damn close! Wefwef is really nice and is probably closest to Apollo in terms of look and feel right now. Memmy already has some things over wefwef however such as multiple themes and push notifications. Honestly tho it’s all preferences and I’m just happy we have so many options in active development!

ellesper,
@ellesper@lemmy.world avatar

Yeah, Memmy is far and away my favorite way to browse Lemmy so far.

+1 for memmy!

The iOS styling is nice, I bet iPhone users would love this. Seems like true black background for OLED users too.

I don't like that tapping on the Posts button doesn't show you posts, it shows you a list of filters for the posts you might want to browse. I'd much prefer it just show me the posts using default or last-used parameters and add a button to change them instead.

Jcb2016, in BaconReader's final release announcement

I wanted to like BR but it lacked so much. Android app was better then ios but i couldn't do basic things that made me reddit the way i wanted to reddit. plus the devs barely answered anything on the sub. Sad to see them go!

I also have recently left Reddit. And I am all for blocking content that contains hate speech. Allowing fascist content to take root is unacceptable.

cassetti, in I still appear on Google and I edited and deleted all my comments, this is BS!

I'm writing a program and going to wait several months before I overwrite my content - slowly one post per minute. Then after finishing that (over several months), I plan to set the code to slowly delete the posts, one by one.

I spent years writing content for reddit to share with the world. If they won't share with the world, they won't get a copy either.

soundasleep,
@soundasleep@kbin.social avatar

I want to do something very similar to this!

  1. download all my content (still waiting on that one)
  2. put all my comments on my personal website each with a unique ID
  3. edit each post on reddit to point to the content on my website, that way I maintain control but the internet doesn't lose information

do you think your software could do this? :D

cassetti,

Don't know! I have a bit of experience using Auto-It so I'm going to try and program it to tab through the old.reddit page and edit each post then move on to the next post. I assume using the edit button I could copy all text, then write it to a word document in something like an XML format which could then be imported into software.

But again, this is all based on theory, I haven't done any actual code or testing yet. Just based on previous experiences making simple programs to access websites and do specific things via a browser to mimic human interactions with the site. It's a very slow unreliable and inefficient way of doing things lol

NetHandle, in I still appear on Google and I edited and deleted all my comments, this is BS!

People finding out the internet never forgets, and never forgives.

Kbin_space_program,

Based on EU law, reddit has to delete your stuff when you ask. Right to be forgotten and all that .

lifeishard,

This is Google remembering. Not reddit.

abff08f4813c,

Google cache does expire so it will forget eventually. The problem is when you go to the original on reddit, we're seeing that some of the comments still have their text intact, but with a [deleted] username now.

valaramech,
@valaramech@kbin.social avatar

This is the expected behavior on Reddit when you delete your account. None of your posts go anywhere. You have to manually, before you delete your account, edit them to remove their contents. Requests for deletion under GDPR may function differently.

abff08f4813c,

Sadly, at the moment, they do not. https://kbin.social/m/RedditMigration/t/94785/Can-t-view-delete-comments-after-7-months#entry-comment-402774

Several folks here have reported this noncompliance to their gov't and i expect an epic showdown where reddit gets its behind handed to it, but that's likely some years away.

The important thing is to get people to be aware of this. A lot of folks seem to delete their accounts and then, too late, be caught by surprise that nothing they wrote is deleted - and now cannot be removed.

Some folks do the right thing, but then get surprised when it turns out that redact.dev or shreddt.com or Power Delete Suite failed to delete all of their comments for various reasons.

We shouldn't let reddit get away with this.

Huh.... because they are all describing a particularly shitty work environment, there is a good bet that there are other employees who feel that way. It might indeed not be the protests that kill Reddit - but Reddit itself that kills Reddit.....
