Ditto, I only interacted sparingly on like 3 subs that I liked. Here I've subscribed to many more and am sharing and interacting way more than I ever did on Reddit
i would not have found this federated alternative if not for the protest.
i, for one, am glad to not have to put up with the ever increasing ads, the constant "install reddit app" popup, the crappy "new" interface (vs the "old".. which i continued to use)...
Remains to be seen how the post June 30 impact to mobile apps and the mod community shapes up. But the drive to further monetize the platform for the IPO is the writing on the wall afaiac.
Yes, the federated user base is still in its infancy.. but quality over quantity :)
I view the protest as a shot across the bow. The warning about how much impact the changes are going to cause if Reddit doesn't back off. Reddit management has gone with "damn the torpedoes; full speed ahead". It is the next round that is going to indicate whether mods and users are really ready to bail.
Digg didn't die all at once. It was a very slow, miserable death.
And even now, Digg still exists, with some users even. As long as the Threadiverse gets better and Reddit gets worse, we'll see continued waves of people leaving.
The real question is whether it'll look like Digg -> Reddit (where most everyone left eventually) or Twitter -> Mastodon (where large groups of people were "too confused" and didn't move).
I don’t know. I’m here, I’m happy about that, and there are more people making this place better by the week. So as far as I’m concerned, it was a huge success. Reddit can be Reddit.
I reviewed the Reddit app at 1* because it honestly is a steaming pile of shit sorry excuse for an app, especially considering how long it's been in this state now without any improvement.
This question is more related to the overall Lemmy/kbin experience and not necessarily wefwef, but is there a potential function in the works to hide posts? That’s what I loved about Apollo, I could manually hide posts (I had it as a swipe feature) or have it auto hide read posts. It kept my feed looking much more fresh, and it’s honestly the biggest thing I’m missing in the transition.
That’s great to hear, thanks. I honestly didn’t know if it was just a thing for Apollo, did other apps have it as a feature? I went from AlienBlue to Apollo so haven’t experienced a lot of them.
Yup. That’s a native Reddit feature so it is part of the implementation of a lot of apps. In wefwef’s case I’m not sure how they developed it because I don’t think that’sa native feature of Lemmy
I updated the Apollo app last night. Not only will I decline the refund, I also gave a $10 tip too. If you have a bit of spare cash I would suggest as many of you that can, do the same to show our appreciation, and it may help to cover costs for those that still accept the refund option.
I do get ppl saying its complicated. A lot of people dont know much about servers just as a start? (Not that you really have to to use kbin or lemmy.) or know anything about federation or what it mean in this sense. If you ask them what is meant by instance, most people saying so probably wouldn't understand that in this sense even if English's their maternal language. Not even that those people arent smart, just like just because you dont understand a foreign language doesnt mean youre not smart: this is just an area they dont know about.
I think some people find it strange that people are confused, because maybe they dont often talk with people who arent as familiar with technology, or more used to being on 'tech' related parts of the internet where some people would understand these. It seems this way bc the community of kbin seems to be more into technology, like i seen programmer humor posts get popular a lot, and discussions about linux, and the technology magazine, and stuff like that.
If so i can see why someone being confused would be surprising. But know that: a lot of people probably wouldnt join other social media either if it was more user-driven (in terms of setup? If thats phrased right?) which is why stuff gets more simplified on official websites and app. Is important to remember that many people (even some my own age!) dont have any context for all of this stuff they would need to deal with and decide in order to use Kbin/Lemmy - dont know what is an instance. What is federation. Defederation. I would say its easy to understand once you try, but i know i speak for myself who already has some knowledge and interest about technology and learn fast. And not everyone even wants to use something that required them to figure it out as they go.
