I was introduced to the boykisser/girlkisser meme over in https://lemmy.blahaj.zone/c/196 recently, and today the power of memes compelled me to make this.

I've tagged it as OC since I made this meme image for kbin/lemmy specifically -- i.e. it's not a repost from reddit or 4chan or wherever -- but the image is, of course, based on a screenshot from Karakai Jozu no Takagi-san. I asked recently on my "Shinobu Horror Story" post to https://reddthat.com/c/animepics about whether or not this is the right idea on how to use the OC flag, but didn't get feedback. (Actually, does that OC flag even get copied over to lemmy or is that just a kbin thing...?) Anyway, let me know if you have opinions on this.

Studio ghibli movies shows what anime would be like if it wasn’t solely made to appeal to horny adolescent boys. I think it’s the only Japanese animation I would dare watching with my parents / kids without having to check prior if it got weird shit like in the second panel. I remember my brother begging me to watch the movie “your name” ( or weathering with you? I don’t remember ) because it’s supposed to be a very well made emotional story. the first ten minutes a boy exchange his body with a girl and vice versa. The first thing the boy does? grope himself. I closed it and re-watched princess mononoke instead.

Bread,

That and a few other things aside, it is still a very good movie I would recommend. Although I will agree that is a bit awkward.

Not every animation has to be for kids or tame. And I would love more stuff that would be weird to watch with parents or something. However a lot of anime is just weird and immature imo, but studio ghibli stuff isn’t the only that is bearable to watch

Not showing nudity, sex or women objectification doesn’t make a show for kids or/and tame. Sprited away and princess mononoke have quite a lot of body horror and gore. The use of such scenes need to have a purpose and not be there for the sake of having an adult rating, horny bait/ fan service but that’s the case of most depictions and this is what I am complaining about. Let’s take for exemple another ghibli movie : the wind rises. In the movie, the woman flirt with her husband and sex is alluded. The scene serves a purpose in story and feels natural, it isn’t forced into the viewer, feels very awkward or objectify the women.

Heck, you could have an adult show that have no swearing at all so that when a character drop the f bomb during a scene you know he’s really pissed.

I wouldn’t want ghibli movies to be different, I just mean that I wouldn’t mind stuff that you don’t want kids to see. And I don’t mean ecchi stuff. I had Perfect Blue in mind when I wrote the comment. It’s not immature, not for kids and displays objectification as something horrifying. Not every anime has to be like Perfect Blue, but not every anime has to be suitable for kids. I read your first comment as a wish for any anime to be watchable with the family, but that is something I am very much against. Especially because people often take animation for a kid’s genre. It is a medium for any subject and any audience.

Diabolo96,

[animation] is a medium for any subject and any audience

I fully agree.

I think there’s a misunderstanding here. I don’t mind when such themes is used as a part of the story, what I am complaining about is the forced ecchi aspect that is prevalent in most Japanese animations. Otherwise, If you remove that, a lot of anime may as well be for kids honestly.

When I was still watching anime and a ecchi scene was randomly thrown at my face. I wasn’t like : “that’s nice” or whatever they expect me to feel, it always felt awkward and I end up asking myself what was even the point of that ?

DavidGarcia,

true, this one probably fits the requirements best. it was alright. I’m really surprised this isn’t a bigger genre. Something like The Saga of Tanya the Evil but with Monsters would be cool.
