Studio ghibli movies shows what anime would be like if it wasnāt solely made to appeal to horny adolescent boys. I think itās the only Japanese animation I would dare watching with my parents / kids without having to check prior if it got weird shit like in the second panel. I remember my brother begging me to watch the movie āyour nameā ( or weathering with you? I donāt remember ) because itās supposed to be a very well made emotional story. the first ten minutes a boy exchange his body with a girl and vice versa. The first thing the boy does? grope himself. I closed it and re-watched princess mononoke instead.
Not every animation has to be for kids or tame. And I would love more stuff that would be weird to watch with parents or something. However a lot of anime is just weird and immature imo, but studio ghibli stuff isnāt the only that is bearable to watch
Not showing nudity, sex or women objectification doesnāt make a show for kids or/and tame. Sprited away and princess mononoke have quite a lot of body horror and gore. The use of such scenes need to have a purpose and not be there for the sake of having an adult rating, horny bait/ fan service but thatās the case of most depictions and this is what I am complaining about. Letās take for exemple another ghibli movie : the wind rises. In the movie, the woman flirt with her husband and sex is alluded. The scene serves a purpose in story and feels natural, it isnāt forced into the viewer, feels very awkward or objectify the women.
Heck, you could have an adult show that have no swearing at all so that when a character drop the f bomb during a scene you know heās really pissed.
I wouldnāt want ghibli movies to be different, I just mean that I wouldnāt mind stuff that you donāt want kids to see. And I donāt mean ecchi stuff. I had Perfect Blue in mind when I wrote the comment. Itās not immature, not for kids and displays objectification as something horrifying. Not every anime has to be like Perfect Blue, but not every anime has to be suitable for kids. I read your first comment as a wish for any anime to be watchable with the family, but that is something I am very much against. Especially because people often take animation for a kidās genre. It is a medium for any subject and any audience.
[animation] is a medium for any subject and any audience
I fully agree.
I think thereās a misunderstanding here. I donāt mind when such themes is used as a part of the story, what I am complaining about is the forced ecchi aspect that is prevalent in most Japanese animations. Otherwise, If you remove that, a lot of anime may as well be for kids honestly.
When I was still watching anime and a ecchi scene was randomly thrown at my face. I wasnāt like : āthatās niceā or whatever they expect me to feel, it always felt awkward and I end up asking myself what was even the point of that ?
If you havenāt read this series before, itās fantastic. The author crams in so many visual gags it is really impressive. Also, they are able to keep surprising with the humor. One of the risks with these silly premise manga is that they get old. However, this one has only gotten better as its gone on.
Here is a post on the anime community about it. Basically, there is a bit of a backlash against Mappa by others in the industry right now for setting timelines way too aggressively, forcing tons of overtime on the animators.
This isnāt even a recent problem, Mappa has doing this shit for ages. Taking on way too many projects at once putting way too much pressure on staff for not enough pay. The anime industry is brutal on their staff, and Mappa is probably the worst.
Yes, this is a panel from that same series, much later on. I will reiterate what I said in that thread that the series is great and worth checking out for the genius absurdity that is contained within.
