Tigbitties, in What's a quote that has stuck with you for your whole life?

A Yes, a No, a straight line, a goal. Progress is meaningless unless it is aimed at something specific. - Nietzsche

jonatan83, in given how little one vote matter, it seems to me that stripping felons of their right to vote is both petty and counterproductive if the point was to reform them into civic minded individuals ?

One vote might not matter much, but 4.6 million votes can swing elections. It’s really fucking weird how that country calls itself a democracy when it does this, allows rampant gerrymandering, have a very uneven vote weight depending on where you live, and, just as icing on the cake, allows slavery in some specific instances.

jaackf,

Doesn’t the US also have the largest population of prisoners in the entire world too?

Deceptichum,
@Deceptichum@kbin.social avatar

Currently China, per capita El Salvador. US scores second most population wise (3rd most populous country, so it's not that unreasonable?) and 5th per capita (No excuse).

The US appears to have been slowly going down a little bit, some times when it feels like it, more so if you're white, with a big drop during Covid.

jaackf,

Interesting. I can imagine China’s high rate of incarceration is due to the CCCP and El Salvador is due to the cartels. Wonder how many of those in prison in the US are there for pretty drug crimes though…

nivenkos,

What is the CCCP? You mean Communist Party of China?

jaackf,

Oops, too many Cs haha! Yess, the CCP /CPC

EtnaAtsume,

It’s not strange at all when you consider your own phrasing: calls itself a democracy.

Plenty of places do that. Doesn’t make it so.

richteratmosphere, in What's the point of buying new phones every years?
@richteratmosphere@lemmy.sdf.org avatar

I bought an unlocked Pixel 6 near launch on sale and intend to use it until security updates cease (five years from launch).

wheeldawg,

I got the pixel 7 last year since my old pixel 2xl was out of security.

Well that and the battery was terrible and it was sluggish as well in general and a screen crack that didn’t affect functionally, but was annoying af. Still have it around as a spare device to go back to if this one has an issue.

nouben,

Same here, kept a pixel 2 for way too long, i had to charge it 2 times a day if i used it as a smartphone ^^ though i didn’t feel it become sluggish

YamJamKablamb, in What genres of music do Lemmites enjoy?

pinwurm,

The PetroDragronic Apocalypse is one of the best records I’ve heard in some time, from any band, in any genre.

I can’t stop listening to it. To add, I’m not really a fan of any of their other records. They’re clearly good, just doesn’t resonate with me as much as this one does.

maegul, in Is there a way to filter across communities in Lemmy using the search function?
@maegul@lemmy.ml avatar

I’m with you, the community management aspects of the UI could do with some love.

My quick thoughts:

  1. Sorting by the columns in the list of communities page
  2. Have the search field not jump to the generic search, but instead apply a filter to the table (which can then also be sorted by the columns)
  3. In the Subscribed communities sidebar, also have a search field that alters the list of communities to only those that match the search
  4. In the same sidebar, allow users to place communities into folders or lists that can be folded or expanded so that users can easily navigate to user defined subsets of their communities. Currently it’s a flat list alphabetically sorted.
  5. Either in the side bar or the communities list page, list the number of posts in that community today. I don’t know how viable this is, but each community’s sidebar shows usage data, including the number of users/day, so something like this must be possible.
  6. Much more ambitiously, and it’s already in the GitHub issues but I’m mentioning it here anyway, 4 above naturally leads to providing a feed for only a selected user defined folder/group/subset of groups, so that they’re not merely for organisational purposes but like multi-reddits a nice way of customising your feed.
Candelestine, in What's a quote that has stuck with you for your whole life?

For my whole life is a tall order. Probably “what goes around comes around”.

AlexWIWA, in Why is youtube recommending conservative "talking points" to me?

NeoLikesLemmy, in given how little one vote matter, it seems to me that stripping felons of their right to vote is both petty and counterproductive if the point was to reform them into civic minded individuals ?

It us not just petty or counterproductive. It is violating the basic principle of democracy itself.

Davel23, in What is a beautiful concept or idea that continues to blow your mind?

You might want to check out the novel Bloom by Wil McCarthy. It uses Conway's Game of Life and other cellular automata to illustrate several plot points.

aCosmicWave,

Thank you! This is right up my alley and I will definitely check it out.

Djh8878, in What is a beautiful concept or idea that continues to blow your mind?

What are some other rules to the excel example you gave, kinda want to try programming something like this to see how it’d play out

Kolanaki,
@Kolanaki@yiffit.net avatar

Just look up “The Game of Life.” It’s not really a spread sheet, that’s simply how it’s displayed (grids of pixels that are either living, dead, or food) and it just kinda simulates an ecosystem in the most very, very basic of ways. All you can do to influence the game is change what a grid contains, with the goal (if you can say it has any) of keeping a sustainable system going.

aCosmicWave,

Yep! The spreadsheet is just an analogy I used to help unfamiliar people visualize what I was talking about.

The actual rules for Conway’s Game of Life are as follows:

  1. Any live cell with fewer than two live neighbours dies, as if by underpopulation.
  2. Any live cell with two or three live neighbours lives on to the next generation.
  3. Any live cell with more than three live neighbours dies, as if by overpopulation.
  4. Any dead cell with exactly three live neighbours becomes a live cell, as if by reproduction
