WreckingBANG, in What's a good router for a home VPN?
@WreckingBANG@lemmy.ml avatar

I would recommend just using a RaspberryPi and host it yourself. I never had any issues and it was the most reliable way for me

thequickben,

I second this. Pivpn is very easy to setup.

lynny, in What are some of the things you say / think to yourself when going through a hard time or dealing with uncertainty to help yourself along?
@lynny@lemmy.world avatar

I remind myself of how awful a person I am and that the suffering I’m going through is not anywhere near what I deserve.

I give thanks to God that, for whatever reason, I’m given a better existence than someone like me should ever have.

Kissaki,

That’s so dark - doesn’t sound healthy.

But interesting that it works for you. Thank you for sharing

intensely_human,

Almost the same, but I give thanks that my conscience is being scoured clean by the pain.

Lemmylefty, in What are some useful or just cool stuff to memorize?
@Lemmylefty@lemmy.world avatar

How to pronounce names in different cultures.

Usernameblankface, in What do you use Vaseline for?

I use it kind of like WD-40 in a farm setting. It's messy, but not as messy as grease. It's effective to coat things that constantly wear and have started to rust. I also rub it on my leather boots to waterproof it for cheap.

Pavidus, in What series did you rewatch most often?

Bojack Horseman

Midnight gospel

Letterkenny

lotanis, in should we be worried about powers-moderators/users?

I think we lose sight of why “powermods” gained power: they built the big successful communities. Reddit was largely successful due to some fantastic communities being built up, and that takes work. We need that work on Lemmy just as much as we needed it on Reddit.

Yeah, it’s not ideal if a small number of people control a large number of communities but we should understand why they got there, and I think the structure of Lemmy is likely to make it a bit less prevalent.

Maestro, in What do you use Vaseline for?
@Maestro@kbin.social avatar

I use it on my instruments. Greasing the cork connectors on my clarinet and lubricating the tuning slide on my trumpet.

henfredemars, in What do you use Vaseline for?

Eczema, where your typical lotion just won’t cut it.

debounced, in What do you use Vaseline for?

O-rings. Lube them up so they don't leak in use/dry out in storage for my cheap-o pool, works great.

Kecessa, in During travel, what can I prepare beforehand as meal, which can be eaten without access to fire or microwave?

>travels halfway around the world

>worries about food being expensive

kia,

Flying to Iceland is actually relatively cheap. Things are insanely expensive once you’re there though.

derf82,

For 2 people it’s at least around $2,000 (or the local equivalent) from Hong Kong round trip. Kind of cheap, but not that cheap.

Still, given the carbon emissions of flying, it is far too cheap to fly in general.

kia,

Oh wow, that’s way more expensive than I thought.

JackGreenEarth,

We should switch back to dirigibles.

nigelinux,

I understand it may sound strange. But given we’ve spent a lot on tickets, tours and accommodations, we’d like to spend less on food, which is the least important thing to us. My wife sometimes even jokes if there’s a pill that can provide all nutrition a person need, she would take that every day and forgo the ability/choice to eat any other thing.

bionicjoey,

Just buy groceries and cook them in your hotel while you’re there instead of eating at restaurants. My cousin did a trip to Iceland a few years ago and that was his strategy.

nigelinux,

We do plan to cook at the hotel we’ve booked, but not sure what type of food are more suitable to be brought as lunch without microwave. In HK, we often cook rice and such and use microwave to reheat for lunch.

dinosara,

In this case, whey protein and some Carbo snacks?

wildeaboutoskar, in What do you use Vaseline for?

It’s used at festivals - put some under your nose and the portaloos aren’t so bad

PerogiBoi, in Is anybody else more active here then they were on Reddit?
@PerogiBoi@lemmy.ca avatar

Every comment I would make on Reddit seemed to get challenged by someone looking to start a long-winded argument as they were, in fact, the main character of the universe.

I like it here because so far, people are nice. It’s like the first day of high school and everyone just wants to be friends and meet people.

Scooter411,
@Scooter411@lemmy.ml avatar

I feel like your characterization of Reddit users as long-winded and contrarian is inaccurate and frankly offensive. Let me write you several paragraphs about why you’re wrong, sprinkled with thinly veiled personal insults and outright harsh commentary about you as a person.

Sorry, just trying to make it feel like our old home :)
