SwingingTheLamp, in What is the most unhelpful advice you have received?

On dating and relationships: “Just be confident.”

It’s not wrong, but spectacularly unhelpful. I mean, a brain surgeon has to be confident to go cutting into somebody’s head, but clearly that’s not enough, right? Confidence as a romantically-attractive quality is a very particular (and peculiar) performance. Going to a party 110% certain of one’s own value, sitting in a corner with a confident set of one’s jaw, and silently waiting for the ladies to form a queue is…

…sufficient, apparently, because you just to be confident.

dhruv,

I think they might have meant confidence in the sense to go out and try things you’d normally be shy to do. But that’s only how I’d interpret it.

  • I lost my thing.

EuroNutellaMan,
@EuroNutellaMan@lemmy.world avatar

Nah that’s actually useful. May help the other person remember if they saw it/moved it/whatever or at least gives them a place to start helping you look for it. If they don’t know they wouldn’t be able to help question or not.

DrQuint, in What is the worst thing you have experienced on Reddit?

Well, on reddit, I was only ever banned from one community, that being /r/worldnews.

And I got banned because there were hours old comments by users there basically stating it was a good thing that old people were dying from covid. They were downvoted, but still, not enough, and no one had the guts to say it so I did: I told them that they were plaguespreaders and a blight on humanity, and should improve it by killing themselves, and the fact they weren’t already banned was a gigantic shame for the website.

Which I stand by.

The mods then banned me (after I got like 50 upvotes in a couple minutes proving people paid attention to the comments but didn’t realize how nefarious they were) but… didn’t ban the other users. That is until I complained about it elsewhere and basically highlighted how terrible the mods of that subreddit are. THEN they got banned.

They still didn’t unban me and I wear that ban with pride. I am 100% aware that I triggered an automated ban on myself. Which is, actually, the de facto bad experience I bring to the table: One of the largest subreddits, filled with nothing but “”“powermods”“”, is being left completely unmoderated and easily free to be astroturfed by coordinated bad actors. This is effectively the same as being tolerant of them

My one political stance on social media is no one should ever be allowed to moderate more than 3 communities.

i_pee_through_that,

Wasn’t /r/worldnews an anime titties subreddit?

SilentStorms,
@SilentStorms@lemmy.fmhy.ml avatar

No its the otherway around. /r/anime_titties is a world news/politics subreddit. Oddly enough it had more mature discussion than most of the other news subs.

Rozz, in What series did you rewatch most often?

Futurama, Archer, and Rick and Morty are the one I have rewatched the most in the last decade.

@HeartyBeast@kbin.social avatar

I can’t not rewatch Hot Fuzz whenever it’s on telly

ghashul,

Hot Fuzz is my answer too, but never on the telly. I saw it several times in the theater and bought the dvd immediately upon release.

Hextic,

I swear this movie is the perfect example of a master class of editing and timing. It needs to be studied.

That got a laugh!

Crankpork, in What gaming console / platform do you prefer?

I play a lot of MMOs on my PC laptop, but other than those I mostly use my Switch.

EggsCurrently, in What is the most unhelpful advice you have received?

“Do something that you love and you’ll never work a day in your life.”

Bullshit. I worked in the video game industry in a field I’m very passionate about with great people who were all talented. But the industry burned me out and almost killed my passion for games as a hobby with the endless unpaid overtime, constant crunch and deadlines, fairly low wage and all that investment was rewarded by eventually being let go along with all the less senior staff because our studio was bought out and the parent company told to cut expenses.

Don’t work for the video game industry, people. Make indie games by all means. But stay clear of the big names.

Addfwyn,

I have always hated that advice. While exceptions exist, there is no faster way to burn yourself out on something you love than making a career out of it. I generally do like my work (IT) now, but a lot if that is because I actively try to not even look in the direction of a computer when I am not in the office. I probably consume less tech/IT industry news now than I did before I worked in the field.

Candelestine, in What do you use Vaseline for?

It’s good for knuckles that crack and bleed in the winter. Lotion isn’t really good enough unless you’re applying it multiple times a day.

fiat_lux,

Same, and also for the tip of my nose. Windy weather with low humidity makes the tip of my nose itch like crazy. Normal moisturiser helps remove the itch but it absorbs too quickly to work as a protective measure, so an extra coat of Vaseline stops the area drying out again as quickly.

OrkneyKomodo, in What do you use Vaseline for?

TBH, it’s not that great for lips. Try Carmex.

Fondots,

Back in my marching band days, we swore by blistex DCT as our lip balm of choice.

Take it from the people who spend all summer out in the sun preparing to press pieces of metal up to our lips in sometimes freezing weather.

Belgdore,

Kittiesmom13, in What are some useful or just cool stuff to memorize?

Just for fun -

Once a molicepan met a bittle lum Sitting on the sturbcone eating gubber rum Mmmm said the molicepan, simme gum Not on a sam dight said the bittle lum

Growing up in the 1930s, mom said the was the girls favorite pastime - swapping letters of different phrases.

I know you were looking for more serious things, but this was fun for me to memorize years ago and try to put into play with other phrases.
