omey, in What is the most unhelpful advice you have received?

Me: having a hard time mentally and emotionally Someone: “You need to pray to God to make your troubles go away.”

Anonymouse,

Am I supposed to upvote this because it’s awful advice or downvote it because it’s depressing advice?

It seems like this person either had success with their advice or had nothing to say, but felt the need to say something.

My favorite advice for clinical depression is “just snap out of it.”

Dr_Cog,
@Dr_Cog@mander.xyz avatar

Is it inappropriate or off topic? Then you downvote.

Anything else? Upvote or abstain

ZombieTheZombieCat,

“Nothing happens in god’s world by mistake.” “God never gives you more than you can handle.” Etc etc.

When 1 in 6 women has been sexually assaulted in their lives (and many men and NB folks), that’s a really fucked up thing to say. You never know what someone’s been through, and I’ve personally been through a lot of awful things. I guess it helps some people to tell themselves this kind of shit, but it is impossible to me to think of any kind of meaning that would make being a victim of violent crime “positive” or “worth it” or “a learning experience” blah blah blah. I think the term for that is “toxic positivity.”

So either “everything happens for a reason” is utter bullshit, or god is a sadistic fucking asshole.

NotYourSocialWorker,

I’m a Christian but I support the school of thought that says “shit happens”.

Another problem with the thinking “everything happens for a reason” is that it can lead to belief in “the just world”. When one thinks that life is fair you start to believe that bad things only happens to bad people, ie they deserve it.

SexualPolytope, in What movie did you rewatch most often?
@SexualPolytope@lemmy.sdf.org avatar

Gangs of Wasseypur. It’s a 5-hour movie, split into two parts. But really, it’s just one epic story. I’ve watched it countless number of times. While in college, me and my mates would get high and watch this movie. I’ve probably watched it with most of my friends at least once.

Two other movies that come close are Pulp Fiction and Bhooter Bhobishyot.

Im28xwa, in What movie did you rewatch most often?

Maybe Thor Ragnarok

Freakazoid, in Is it worth to read Star Wars novels?
@Freakazoid@feddit.nl avatar

I started reading the canon novels about the time of TFA. Have enjoyed most of the (read about 20 in total). Some are targeted more towards an audience that I’m not in, but that’s understandable. Never felt like the stories were too restricted. If that’s your biggest concern I would suggest the high republic books, or the ones around characters that have less storyline in the movies and series.

My favourite is Catalyst: a rouge one story. Like the movies it does a really great job adding to the narrative that follows it.

BenDoubleU, in What are your favorite sublemmys?
@BenDoubleU@lemmy.world avatar

Gotta be honest: I’m all for communities. Hate magazines.

tox_solid,
@tox_solid@lemmy.world avatar

If we’re being honest, I hate magazine less than I hate sublemmy.

Spacemanspliff,

I hate u/spez less then I hate sublemmy

Jackolantern,

Me too. That magazine thing confused me at the start.

berkat, in Am I too stupid or is Lemmy not working? Different experience logged in vs. logged out

While not the purpose of this community, make sure you go into your lemmy settings and have any languages you want enabled. The UI isn’t very clear so also make sure “undetermined” is selected along any other languages you’d like to see.

0x4E4F,
@0x4E4F@lemmy.fmhy.ml avatar

This is most likely the reason why you’re seing only 1 post when logged in. Have Undetermined selected in Settings and always post as Undetermined, no matter wich language you post in.

paulchartres, in What movie did you rewatch most often?

A Silent Voice, really beautiful movie about bullying and redemption. I watched it a few years ago when I was in a really bad place, and it helped me a lot.

amenotef, in Those who tried Linux and went back to Windows, what caused you to go back to Windows?
@amenotef@lemmy.world avatar

Two (minor) issues I have right now in Linux (stuff I need to research more on how to mitigate, at least the first one):

  • RX 6800 with LG 27GL850: In Windows AMD patched like a 1-2 years ago the drivers to use 5W-10W while on desktop. On Linux it still uses 32W and the only workaround is to reduce refresh rate from 144Hz to 120Hz.
  • Audio: When switching between different audio devices (“Line out” and “S/PDIF” some apps do not handle the switch instantly like in Windows. So for example if I’m playing a song in Spotify and I want to S/PDIF (which is connected to some studio monitors in the living room in my case) I need to close spotify and open again. In Windows you can switch without interrupting the song. Same happens while gaming. (Restarting a game is a PITA). I also use S/PDIF with my wired headphones that I use for gaming.

Ubuntu 23.04.

Yazer, in What series did you rewatch most often?

The office. Probably 5x by now. Always great.

paulchartres,

Agreed, I’m on my third rewatch… never gets old!

Tugboater203, in What gaming console / platform do you prefer?
@Tugboater203@lemmy.world avatar

Xbox X, but I’m considering a Steam Deck for a more portable experience. I need to be able to play off line though.

smoof,

I'm offline half the time on Steam Deck. It has issues with reconnecting with my router after resuming and I just ignore it. If I manually connect when it doesn't auto connect, it complains about password error, but I just keep spamming ok and it connects. I wish I knew how to fix it.

marmarama,

Have you tried turning off Wi-Fi power management on the Deck? The Deck’s Wi-Fi is normally pretty good, but the Wi-Fi power management occasionally has issues with some combinations of router chipset and router settings, which can cause symptoms like what you’re experiencing.

Full instructions are here: seekingtech.com/how-to-disable-wi-fi-power-manage…

kairo79, in What's a big tech product that you actually find useful?
@kairo79@lemmy.ml avatar

I have Google smart speakers in every room except the children’s rooms. the fact that the music can be played synchronously in every room alone is worth my data to me.

200cc, in What gaming console / platform do you prefer?

They are more or less the same piece of hardware with different software in it. There are no reasons a console wouldn't do the same things that a PC does other than the devs put limits on what you can do with these. Consoles are crap made for stealing kids money

rikudou,
@rikudou@lemmings.world avatar

That wasn’t the question, though.

RogueTyre,

But it does seem to have better hardware for the price which they usually get back from games so unless u buy a lot of games it’s probably a cheaper option. That said I am strictly a pc gamer playing indie titles so take it with a grain of salt.

200cc,

Don't fall for the trap, it's not cheaper when you consider that you can do no upgrade and no repair

bug,

It’s also not cheaper when you consider the cost and limited choice of console games compared to the almost limitless choice of things to play on a PC, many of which are free or can often be heavily discounted. Also I hear your can use your PC for other things too!

rikudou, in What gaming console / platform do you prefer?
@rikudou@lemmings.world avatar

I went PC -> Switch -> Steam Deck. Also briefly PS1 when I was a kid. I’m a PC gamer at heart, probably gonna stick with it.

OwenEverbinde, in Be honest, do you still use reddit?
@OwenEverbinde@reddthat.com avatar

Like a lot of people are saying, if reddit comes up in a search result, I’m clicking it. You know that’s your best shot at finding the answer you’re looking for.

But opening the app? Scrolling and socializing? I checked my comment history just now, and since joining Lemmy on July 1st, I have commented 5 reddit comments; 1 of them was a reply to someone replying to me. 4 of them were specifically about ActivityPub social networks.

In that same thirteen days, I left 33 comments on Lemmy.
