popemichael, in What's the point of buying new phones every years?
@popemichael@lemmy.world avatar

My number one reason: battery life

Tak,
@Tak@lemmy.ml avatar

They could make the battery last 5+ years before degradation if they made the phones a bit thicker to get the same battery life with lithium iron phosphate cells instead of lithium ion cells. They also don’t turn into spicy pillows or catch fire really too if that means anything to you.

I really don’t understand the obsession with having the thinnest possible phone but also selling $2,000 folding phones that are thick as hell.

popemichael,
@popemichael@lemmy.world avatar

That’s why I support the “right to repair”

Sadly a lot of devices are losing that ability by design

Tak,
@Tak@lemmy.ml avatar

I believe it’s all intentional and I blame capitalism.

popemichael,
@popemichael@lemmy.world avatar

Its less of a belief and more of a fact at this point.

Its still really sad either which way

Ser_Salty,

Selling the thinnest phone, but ship it with a silicone case because the thin-ness makes it too fragile. And also one bit of the phone will just be thicker anyway.

It seems almost like parody. Phones are literally too thin for their own components. If anybody knows of a decent line of phones that aren’t overly skinny, please let me know for when I need a new phone.

ChaoticEntropy, in Why is youtube recommending conservative "talking points" to me?
@ChaoticEntropy@feddit.uk avatar

I almost never allow it

The times you do allow it are all the algorithm cares about, sadly. Any kind of engagement is great for companies.

gabriele97, in Why are my subscriptions stuck on "pending"?
@gabriele97@lemmy.g97.top avatar

If you go back and reload the community Page, does it remains stuck in pending?

Lemmyuser_Guest, in What genres of music do Lemmites enjoy?

IDM and Jazz

DumbAceDragon, in What replacement for each major social media do you use
@DumbAceDragon@sh.itjust.works avatar

I tried Tumblr as a replacement for reddit for a while, but I’m just not really cut out for microblogging, so I came to lemmy.

dessalines, in What movie scared you shitless when you were a child?

Ernest scared stupid. That troll going around at night, sneaking into kids rooms and turning them into wooden figurines was terrifying to my kid brain.

bilboswaggings, in What's a quote that has stuck with you for your whole life?

A teacher of mine said to the class: “You may not like studying for now, but you will regret lacking education for the rest of your life”

So basically trade in half of your childhood to have a better time for most of the rest of your life (yeah work may suck, but with better education you can more easily find something you don’t hate)

MashPTater, in What's a quote that has stuck with you for your whole life?

“If worms had machine guns, then birds wouldn’t fuck with them.” A quote from my TI in basic from 85’.

Grivs, in What's a quote that has stuck with you for your whole life?

“You judge yourself by your intentions, but judge others by their actions”

This has helped me with my procrastination and helping to understand co-workers and people in general. Life gets busy and we always mean do get to things, but it’s really on what we actually do and complete that is real.

Brunbrun6766, in given how little one vote matter, it seems to me that stripping felons of their right to vote is both petty and counterproductive if the point was to reform them into civic minded individuals ?
@Brunbrun6766@lemmy.world avatar

Rehabilitation has never been the goal. The goal is free labor pool and punishment. The cruelty is the point.

teft, in What's a quote that has stuck with you for your whole life?
@teft@lemmy.world avatar

Not my whole life but ever since I learned it twenty years ago in the army. “Slow is smooth, smooth is fast”. It’s a saying that means to learn things carefully, slowly, and methodically. When you are learning like this speed will follow as a natural progression. So if you learn something slowly and smoothly it will translate into being quick and doing it correctly. I have applied this to all sorts of different things in life and it has never failed me.

Vonkilington,

Logged in just to upvote this one, because I’m at a new job and something I struggle with is feeling like I ask too many questions. This was good motivation for me, thanks for sharing.

Today,

Congrats on the new gig!

Vonkilington,

Thank you!

icesentry,

Your username reminded me of my favorite Sanderson quote.

The most important step a man can take? It’s not the first one, is it? It’s the next one. Always the next step, Dalinar

I still think about it all the time when I’m in a tough spot.

All the knights radiant oath are great too.

Journey before destination.

Whitebrow, in What's a quote that has stuck with you for your whole life?

This one is from my previous boss: “you gotta do what’s good for you, and nobody else”

Taught me to prioritize things that are important to me and not to live for the sake of others

Another was “you can’t help people who don’t want to help themselves”

Taught me that some efforts are futile because unwillingness from others will result in deterioration to the status quo unless they’re willing to participate to move things forward
