MusketeerX, in What's your filter settings on Lemmy? I feel like I miss the big posts and such.

How do you filter for English?

I sometimes get a bunch of Dutch and German posts. They seem to come in waves. My high school German from years ago is not up to the task so I’d rather filter them out!

lemmy.world/settings in your settings, have “English” and “Unspecified” selected (on pc, old ctrl as you select them). Nothing else. Boom, no German or Dutch.

MusketeerX,

Thanks, that’s great 🙂

jrubal1462, in What password manager do you recommend?

After 2 years of ignoring the fact that I use a duplicate password in over 100 places, and that password has officially been in breaches, I finally came to terms with the fact that it was time to find a password manager and generate unique passwords. I didn’t do a ton of research and ended up with bitwarden. If I opened this thread to see a bunch of people ragging on bitwarden I was prepared to be VERY upset.

Muetzenman, in What replacement for each major social media do you use
@Muetzenman@feddit.de avatar

Reddit with Lemmy and WhatsApp with Signal. I still use Reddit and WhatsApp but i would miss out on to much if i cut the ties. I have LinkedIn but i’m not really using it. Does YouTube count as social media?

arthur, in What is some good things to do with a new pc/laptop/computer?

Do a fresh isn’t all of the OS. If you use windows, run Chris Titus’ debloater. Personally I would choose W10 instead of W11.

masquenox, in What movie scared you shitless when you were a child?

Aliens. Me and my brother sneakily was watching it when our parents were gone, and when that chest-burster came out of that woman, I was out of there like a bat out of hell. Never told my parents, of course - had to protect our VHS privileges and all that… It’s still one of my favorite movies - the original cinematic cut, not the overly long director’s cut (which seems to be the only one you can find these days.]

solrize, in What's something you'd change in men's fashion, given the chance?

Propeller beanies as formal and business attire.

JoeyJoJoJuniour, in What's a quote that has stuck with you for your whole life?

It only ever ends once, everything else is just progress.

Jacob on Lost

Before you do anything, run The Ultimate Windows Utility

“This is a tool that has evolved over several years and achieves much more than just debloating a Windows install. I have expanded it to install the programs you select, which is a bigger selection than ninite. The classic debloat is there, but also includes a tweaks section with quality of life features. To round out everything, I have included my recommended settings for Windows update that I use in a variety of businesses. Misuse of this utility can break your install so please be careful and I do not provide any help or assistance should this happen!”"

One Command - Download and Usage

From an Elevated (Run as Administrator) PowerShell prompt

iwr -useb https://christitus.com/win | iex

And then Debloat more with O&O ShutUp10++

Leviathan, in What's a quote that has stuck with you for your whole life?

This too shall pass.

kakes,

Came way too far to find this. It applies so perfectly to every situation in life.

couragethebravedog, in What's the point of buying new phones every years?

I buy a new phone anytime a new innovation comes out. I ordered the Google pixel on day 1 and am loving it.

zeroscan, in Hey Lemmy, what are some good public domain books?

If epic English poetry doesn’t scare you, Edmund Spencer’s The Faerie Queene is great. It’s like Arthurian legend on acid. Check out the version with the Walter Crane illustrations, which are also excellent.

ice1011, in What's the point of buying new phones every years?

I finally had to upgrade after 5.5 years because software support was lagging for the version of Android I was on.

cyborganism, in Does anyone actually enjoy working out?

Yes. It’s my meditation moment. I don’t have to think about anything other than my posture and movement. I just put on the music I like and go. It also helps relieve tension and frustration when something bad happens during your day. And I feel great afterwards. That post-workout high is real.

Boiglenoight,

This is what it amounts to for me as well. The first 5 min of a run SUCKS, but shortly after I start to zone out. My mind wanders and sometimes it touches on stressful topics. For whatever reason, there’s no anxiety associated with it. It’s like a zen state where I can think about things objectively without emotion.

That’s a big reason why I run.

jimmux,

That’s how I feel with running and cycling. Moving meditation has always worked better for me than trying to sit still.

The first 1km or so can be rough, but that’s just finding where your rhythm is for the session.

I need to get back into running.
