Crankpork, in Why are fediverse admins blocking out threads?

Threads is currently in the first stage of EEE: Embrace, Extend, Extinguish. Best to stop it now before it goes too far.

From Wikipedia:

“Embrace, extend, and extinguish” (EEE), also known as “embrace, extend, and exterminate”, is a phrase that the U.S. Department of Justice found that was used internally by Microsoft to describe its strategy for entering product categories involving widely used standards, extending those standards with proprietary capabilities, and then using those differences in order to strongly disadvantage its competitors.

Rottcodd, in Why are fediverse admins blocking out threads?

No - they’re blocking out any users from accessing the wider fediverse through threads.

They’re entirely welcome to access the fediverse through any of the countless instances that are not owned by grotesquely destructive megacorporations.

dartos,

If you’re in the know, sure, but if the fediverse interacts with threads we could expose literally billions of people to the larger fediverse.

Maybe while the fediverse is still getting it’s legs defederating is the move, but I mean literally billions of people being made aware of the fediverse would be amazing.

original_ish_name,

Embrace, extend, extinguish

Meta does not like the fediverse and they will do anything to destroy it

Steinsprut, in Why are fediverse admins blocking out threads?
@Steinsprut@szmer.info avatar

Couple reasons actually

  • Meta wants to scrap every bit of data, doesn’t matter if it’s on Threads or networks federated with it
  • They just want a free usercount boost for start, and will remove ActivityPub integration when they feel Threads can go on alone
  • It’s all a classic case of Embrace, Extend, Extinguish
ManaBuilt, in What are the bad patterns of Reddit to never repeat on Lemmy?

This is 100% old-man energy, but I dipped back over to reddit after a week or so and man did I forget how many completely random acronyms get thrown around there… FW, TIL, ELI5, FWIW, IANAL…

Don’t even get me started on ETA, which should mean “estimated time of arrival”, but has instead been used to mean “edit to add”, even though just putting EDIT means the same thing??

I see that kind of stuff a lot less here, and I’m assuming it’s a mix of older audience and smaller user base, but so far it’s been so much nicer actually understanding what everyone is saying here.

spiritedaway,

Haha, one for me is “DM” (direct message), I grew up around forums so for me it’s “PM”.

Mugmoor, in People of Lemmy, have you ever had what some would consider a "spiritual" experience?
@Mugmoor@lemmy.dbzer0.com avatar

Sure. Shroms’ll do that to ya.

reverendsteveii,

this, but in a way that’s not flippant and dismissive.

Lemmy.ml just preemptively did it. I think lemmy.world also did it earlier but you’ll have to double check that.

VonReposti, in Are there any Lemmy instances that support all (or most) languages?

I was about to say find a European instance due to the language culture here, but I see that you beat me to it :p

As long as you follow the instance’s rules it shouldn’t be a problem to sign up at e.g. feddit.dk. But it will help if you can tell what languages you are looking for.

MicrowavedTea,

Tbh I’ll probably try there, they just seemed pretty strict in their sign up process :p. The thing is I’m not looking for a specific language but I’m into language learning and it would be nice to be able to see posts in eg. Spanish, French and Swedish without needing a separate account for each.

VonReposti,

I suggest mentioning that in your application. The admin isn’t strict, he just want to keep out trolls and bad actors. I can suggest sending this post through DeepL as the admin there discusses e.g. approval of applications. It might help you understand what is needed.

feddit.dk/post/226231

We do have one active Swede so Swedish is possible to see on feddit.dk

Fisch, in Is there a federated version of Soundcloud?
@Fisch@lemmy.ml avatar

Yes, it’s called Funkwhale

testman, in Is there a federated version of Soundcloud?

there is FunkWhale
not sure how it compares to SoundCloud, but it is certainly some sort of successor to GrooveShark

Fredselfish,
@Fredselfish@lemmy.ml avatar

Man I miss Grooveshark. Used to be awesome! Forgot what happened to it?

dispenser,
@dispenser@lemmy.ml avatar

It got taken down because there was so much licensed music uploaded to it, I believe

Fredselfish,
@Fredselfish@lemmy.ml avatar

Well that was the whole purpose. What makes this Funkywhale any different?

dispenser,
@dispenser@lemmy.ml avatar

Federation, probably harder for music labels to go after so many instances?

GreyEyedGhost,

I think the opposite. Most of the instances are closed/invite only, so there’s no way to know if there’s any improperly licensed music there. 🤷‍♂️

dispenser,
@dispenser@lemmy.ml avatar

Ah that’s funny, kind of like private trackers

Yerbouti, in What video game have you played the most, that you think is garbage and no one else should ever play?

I’ve spent way too much hours in Fall Out 3 and NV. I love those games but I would glady take back a few dozens hours,

ProfezzorDarke,

So you name them because they’re garbage?

Yerbouti,

You’re a chicken Michael

So_zetta_slowpoke, in What are the bad patterns of Reddit to never repeat on Lemmy?

Anyone who comments “this”, “holup”, or “came here to say this” can go fuck themselves.

Lininop,

Now Holup, I came here to say ^this^. Have my updoot kind internet stranger.

LemmyStartNow, in What's the best Android/iPhone app for Lemmy?

Been using Liftoff and I’m enjoying it so far, after using/trying Thunder, Jerboa, Wefwef, lemmotif

ShoePaste,
@ShoePaste@lemmy.ml avatar

Also really liking liftoff. Tried a bunch of others and it honestly just works so much better than the others. Waiting for boost for lemmy though.

Corr,

Really like Liftoff myself as well!

lauha,

I also ended up using liftoff for now, but only today I realised that it apparently does not do notifications??

Please tell me I am wrong.

Corr,

They plan on adding notifications in the near future, in case you were still curious

lauha,

Definitely am. Thank you for answering!

Corr,

No worries! Would love to see more people join Liftoff!

stardust, in I'm the author of an April Fool's Internet Standard, AMA

What are some of your favorite accounts to follow on mastodon?

Also, will your talk be recorded?

Two9A,

My following list; of note is Lisa Melton, whose bio says “Follow me and I’ll fill your timeline with boosts”. She ain’t lying.

Looks like some of the talks from last year were released on the conference’s YouTube, so: hard to say if the recording will be available. I’ll (see if I can) remember to ask on the day.

planforrain, in What video game have you played the most, that you think is garbage and no one else should ever play?

What I am seeing here is that mostly people regret playing free to play games. That tells me that their business model is working as intended but we should all wise up.

My regret is spending too much time making cool mods work together and then not playing the games, oblivion was the worst because I didn’t get it until skyrim was a year or two old and there were so many stupid mods out already. Most of them are janky or old and have incompatibilities with each other. I discovered pretty quickly that I need less options not more in open world rpgs because I’m an adult and don’t have time to play games the way my heart wants to (look in every door, under every bush, around every corner).

weew,

Free to Play games are basically a test of willpower. They use every trick in the book to get people to keep playing and spend money. FOMO via time limited events, gambling addiction via loot boxes/gacha, impatience via playtime or realtime limited resources, sunk cost via slow and difficult to earn resources/rewards. All of which can be “solved” with money.

On the other hand if you’ve got the willpower to just… ignore FOMO, ignore the gambling, and just walk away when you’ve played a little bit each day, F2P games actually offer incredible amounts of content. Over the past decade I’ve played about 5 different F2P games and never spent a single cent. Each one was pretty fun, and I just walked away when I got bored.
