ablackcatstail, in what was your first video game/system you played or remember playing?
@ablackcatstail@lemmy.goblackcat.com avatar

My first video game system that I ever bought was a NES. I got it back in 1986 I think.

Poeticbiscuit, in What's your favorite rabbit hole to go down?

Once in a while, I visit Vsauces old videos. They’re thought-provoking.

ablackcatstail, in What's the point of buying new phones every years?
@ablackcatstail@lemmy.goblackcat.com avatar

The main reason to do it is when the manufacturer no longer releases security updates for the phone. Given the security history and the typical corporate attitude of caring little for the customer, I want to minimize the risk posed by not having a very out of date operating system.

Coreidan,

You don’t need a new phone every year to get this.

AdamEatsAss,

Some manufacturers drop support after a few years. It’s usually less frequent than every year but if you were worried about spyware or someone getting all those weird pictures you have saved to your camera roll it could make sense to upgrade for peace of mind.

Coreidan,

“After a few years”. So if you have a few years why are you buying a new home every year?

Be honest with yourself. You’re addicted.

dragnet,

Wtf? Its a ridiculous BS situation that support is dropped so fast, but if you do anything remotely sensitive on your phone you should absolutely use a device receiving security support.

weew, (edited )

except even “short” support is two years, major companies like Samsung, Apple, and Google give 4+ years. The “gotta upgrade every year for security” is an excuse, not a reason.

Gecko,
@Gecko@lemmy.world avatar

Honestly just switch to a manufacturer that provides security updates for longer periods of time. My iPhone 5S, released nearly 10 years ago and is still getting them. Fairphone is another great example.

Today, in what was your first video game/system you played or remember playing?

I had an off-brand pong, then got an Odyssey game console. Then got a Commodore 64 and played BC’s Quest for Tires for hours.

Spaaarkz, in Does anyone else struggle with silence, particularly when trying to sleep?

A plus one for the white noise machine. Game changer.

galloog1, in What's the hottest and coldest temperature you've ever been in?

Hottest was just under 54° (128.6°F) in Kuwait. I went for a run just to say I was the only person to go for a run in the hottest day in human history so far.

I think it got down to -29 (-20) in Albany NY one year but I’m looking for colder experiences soon.

mythic_tartan,

Awesome. I’m a 40/-40 runner.

galloog1,

I would love to hear about your prep to run in -40. I mostly tap out at -10C

SeeJayEmm, in Do I need to remove metadata from pictures before uploading?
@SeeJayEmm@lemmy.procrastinati.org avatar

That is an absolutely amazing question that I’d also like the answer to.

SeeJayEmm,
@SeeJayEmm@lemmy.procrastinati.org avatar

I did a test upload of an image I knew had location data and it appeared to be stripped when I viewed the post. That being said I’d like a definitive answer and I do agree with everyone saying, the only way to know for sure is to do it yourself.

Anti_Weeb_Penguin, in what was your first video game/system you played or remember playing?

Dynomite on Windows XP

Wolf, in Do I need to remove metadata from pictures before uploading?

Great question, but also better to remove it yourself just for the peace of mind.

NightOwl,

Yep, safest route is to be cautious and do it yourself if it is enough of a concern.

How do I remove Metadata from my pictures?

Yendor,

On windows, if you check the properties of the file, there’s a button to remove metadata.

On iPhone, if you go into your photos and drag a photo up, you can click “adjust” and remove or edit the location and time/date (it will still have camera data).

vita_man,
@vita_man@lemmy.world avatar

Thanks. How would I do it on an Android phone?

Butter_My_Buttcheeks,

shapis, (edited ) in What password manager do you recommend?
@shapis@lemmy.ml avatar

protonpass for sure.

Bitwarden is great, but it’s way too easy to lock yourself out of it if it’s your first pw manager ever.

maxxpowerr,

What would you suggest to first time users so they avoid being locked out?

shapis,
@shapis@lemmy.ml avatar

Same way experienced users would prevent that.

Write down your password and recovery codes in multiple safe places.

That’s a bit of a hassle. For me at least.

That’s why I suggested protonpass. You can mess up but as long as you don’t forget your pw you are fine.

miku,

Make sure you absolutely know your master password or put a hint as there’s no way to ever reset or recover that password if you forget it

Pneuma,

You could get creative with a premium account “A” where you can designate another person/account “B”(can be free account) with emergency access after a waiting period.

When B requests access it’ll send an email where A can approve/deny access immediately; or if you’re completely locked out, B will be granted access after the waiting period that you can set passes.

B can either be another person you trust, or it could just be a written backup that can be locked somewhere safe but not accessed on a daily basis.

If you want, after designation you can cancel premium and the emergency access will still be active, you just cannot add/edit who has access.

starman, in What would Twitter look like with an absolute number of Likes in the system?
@starman@programming.dev avatar

I think that people would just don’t like/upvote any posts and keep those fake internet points for themselves

And/or they would create a lot of fake accounts to upvote their content.

ShadowAether, in e-reader or tablet for reading academic paper

I ended up using a vertical monitor + Zotero for note taking (allows you to highlight text and write comments). My ereader is small enough to be convenient but too small to read papers well. My tablet, I hate writing on screens and it’s also too small

M_Reimer, in Do I need to remove metadata from pictures before uploading?

Just to be sure you should always remove information, you don’t want on the internet, by yourself.

I always have most metadata storage disabled on my smartphone. Good way to prevent leaking of a location stored in images.

kingmook, in What password manager do you recommend?

+1 for bitwarden. If you want full control you can even host your own server. Easyish to setup at Bitwarden Docker Setup

ablackcatstail, in Do I need to remove metadata from pictures before uploading?
@ablackcatstail@lemmy.goblackcat.com avatar

It’s a good idea for the sake of your privacy to remove the metadata from the picture. While for a picture of a pet it is less important, it’s still a good idea to get in the habit of nixing the metadata. Don’t make it easier for you to be tracked and profiled.

apex32,

for a picture of a pet it is less important

What? That would likely give away the location of your home.

mizu6079,
@mizu6079@lemmy.world avatar

Why would it be less important for pet pics though? I think it would be more important because you probably take those pics at home and your home location might get leaked.

Butter_My_Buttcheeks,

Agreed - even if it’s doggo… It has data on it
