Very sensitive smell so i can tell somethings burning or notice dangerous smells much quicker then everyone else tho it feels more like a curse cause a lot of smells are overwhelming and makes me sick.
I’ve noticed I haven’t really been enjoying my time on Reddit anymore. Since the shutdown of Apollo, I’ve found simple tasks like search and going to my favorite subreddits a chore.
Discussions inside of the posts also have deteriorated and I feel like I’m seeing way more AI generated content on askreddit and aita etc. Bots have also run rampant on subreddits like interestingasfuck.
Lemmy is reminding me of Reddit from 2010 . Lots of memes, smaller communities with great discussions. Also love it being connected to Mastodon.
What I’ve realized is I’ve just ended up spending more time outside of any of these apps, which might have ended up being a blessing.
The mobile app Geddit is good for this on Android. You can browse without being signed in and it gets around the nsfw API restrictions because it’s just scraping the website.
It’s the social aspect that is pretty fun, filled the void caused by Tumblr nuking NSFW stuff. I had both a swf and nswf account if that makes a difference, I didn’t use reddit just for porn…
On Reddit, up/down was intended to be used as relevant or not relevant. Then Facebook came around with the Like button and changed the standard.
Coming from the perspective of Digg, Reddit was about sharing external content and giving something an upvote was used to promote that content while a downvote was used to discourage that content from being seen. It was democratic in that the users were relied on for ranking posts without the need for moderators having to establish rules and remove things.
Then Reddit employed an algorithm and most people visit Popular and All making it a shitstorm of irrelevance. People upvote stuff they like that has absolutely no reason to be posted in a sub. Never mind everything that’s gone on with Reddit in recent months, it’s users’ inability to properly use the upvote / downvote buttons that has caused the site to become absolute trash.
Here, we have the added tool of the Star to indicate that we like something while at the same time downvoting it because it’s not relevant to the sub. The problem is that the vast majority of people don’t want to think about or put any effort into anything. At this point, anything that looks like a thumbs up is getting selected because they like it.
If you disagree with someone, you shouldn’t do anything unless you have something to say. Engage with them in conversation and express your point of view - this is “social media”. If others feel your point is relevant you should get an upvote; if you’re off topic you should get a downvote.
Reading over the other comments here, I think most people are expressing a similar perspective. It’s about rankings, not feelings.
i still have a million things ‘saved’ on reddit i need to check out and there’s that one niche sub i lurk that doesn’t seem to want to migrate but other than that nah
For me, it was a reoccurring nightmare that was more of a feeling than some story or vision. It’s really hard to explain, but it always followed the same pattern: I’m doing something (and not in a “doing” way, just some feeling of activity), then this activity somehow starts to speed up until it rushes at an unimaginable speed, and then suddenly comes the realization that this thing is endless and lasts forever, so the speed subsides leaving a lingering feeling of dread and despair.
I remember trying to describe it using this metaphor as a kid (again, nothing here is literal): I’m walking somewhere, first normally, and then speeding up, with walking morphing into an exhaustive and panicked run, until the realization that the destination is only getting further the faster you run hits, so I go back to walking, but feeling crushed at this realization.
I also remember describing or thinking about these dreams in other ways, like flipping through pages of some important book ever faster, until it dawns on me that the book is in fact infinite, for example. Or exerting more and more effort to think of some specific word until I realize that it doesn’t exist. Stuff like that.
Yes. I like reddit’s posts more, but the Memmy app is more stable on my phone than the official reddit app, plus no ads. So I’m currently using both, but as Lemmy’s community grows and matures I’ll probably start using reddit less.
No, I have a couple small communities that I have pull into an RSS reader that still works somehow, but I stay logged out and never comment. 12 year account with 29k karma and I quit cold turkey and mostly went back to RSS feeds.
