It was Eva Saxl. She had fled the Nazis from Czechoslovakia only to find herself under Japanese occupation in Shanghai. From the Wikipedia article, it seems like she extracted the insulin from water buffalo pancreas. I’m not sure if that counts as homebrewing. When I think of homebrew insulin, I think of actually manufacturing it by fermenting specialized yeast as opposed to harvesting it from animals. I don’t think there’s anything wrong with that, but it isn’t really the same.
Personally, I would avoid using the term oligarchy because it has become something of a trend term used as a negative label in US political culture and synonymous with Russian (self described) backwardness and corruption.
I would write in a nod to how humans usually dilute themselves in their political labels and oversimplified ideology. No one calls themselves what they are directly. Like I default assume every monarch believes in their own fantasy meritocracy.
The concept you described could hold parallels to the papal conclave and election process. I would use this as a loose framework to make the ideas relatable.
Not really, since I went back once or twice but then realised how little value I get from there and how much time I waste there. I also try to reduce my time on lemmy but at least everything is new and fresh here.
Nope! While lemmy is still missing a lot of things, such as large amounts of text posts and comments, and smaller communities, I’ve found other ways to fill the gaps. I browsed nosleep a lot and have found some nice series’, but that won’t make me go back. Also Tumblr exists to fill the smaller community gaps
Nope, I actually deleted my Reddit account. I already had low support for Reddit because of the response they gave after the last time there was a Reddit blackout. I had been using Lemmy on and off on my old account on the main instance, so when the recent blackout happened, I gave Reddit one last chance but the way they handled the situation was the last straw for me. I came back to my account on Lemmy and used it until the main Lemmy instance started having server problems due to the influx of users.
My primary desktop is Windows 11, but literally no other computer I personally own runs Windows. Part of it is games, part of it is proprietary software (music production, dj, etc). I could probably game on Linux full time, but until the commercial software situation is improved I will always have an additional Windows or Mac computer.
It’s not as old as some are suggesting but I used to non-ironically listen to pink guy, the musical spin off of Filthy Frank. Not my proudest moment but I guess I still follow George Miller because I listen to Joji. Very different vibe now.
Yes, just a lot less because theres no app for it, so I only check it from a desktop PC instead of constantly the way I have in the past.
Maybe it’s just me but the volume of interesting posts has fallen off a cliff after July 1st. The front page has much less activity and noticably more of it is reposts (which were there before, just a much higher ratio now).
The niche subreddits were always the key draw though, those still only exist on Reddit and nowhere else on the internet.
Occasionally, after seeing something in the news regarding Reddit, I will use libreddit.kavin.rocks to see if that news, or any other negative press is anywhere on r/all.
Most recently was about them removing rewards and coins, and prior to that was code in the app that appears to allude to a cash for karma reward system.
